The 2017 Troplong Mondot is stunning. just as it was en primeur. Rich and ample. yet endowed with striking energy as well. the 2017 is the first vintage made by new CEO Aymeric de Gironde and consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos. The 2017 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. All of the power that is typical of this site is evident. it seems to come so naturally. and yet picking earlier and then using a lighter hand in the cellar yielded a Troplong of uncommon energy and vibrancy. The 2017 has been nothing short of thrilling on the four occasions I have tasted it from bottle so far. What a wine!

The 2017 Chateau Troplong Mondot continues in the new style of this estate and is based on 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc from healthy yields of 48 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a stunning perfume of creme de cassis, black raspberries, white chocolate, crushed flowers, and a terrific sense of minerality. Flawlessly balanced, medium to full-bodied, and nicely concentrated, it shows the more elegant, classical style of the vintage beautifully. It has the texture and balance to drink brilliantly today yet will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for two decades or more.

The palate is powerful and has quite intense flavors of blackberries and blueberries with a super rich and ripe frame of tannin that carries long and expands the finish in impressive style. Hitting 14% alcohol (the pH is 3.66), it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeously sweet raspberries and cassis-like fruit interwoven with notes of spring flowers, rose petal, white chocolate, and spice. While it doesn’t have the massive opulence of the 2015 and 2016, it’s more classically styled as well flawlessly balanced, with a terrific sense of minerality, ultra-fine tannins, and a brilliant finish. Give bottles 5-7 years in the cellar, and it will evolve gracefully for 30-40 years. Hats off to Nicolas Audebert as well as the team of Thomas Duclos for one of the wines of the vintage!

With a little swirling. this baby comes bounding out of the glass with energetic notes of wild blueberries. Morello cherries. baked plums and black raspberries with wafts of Indian spices. lavender. garrigue and tobacco plus a hint of licorice. Medium to full-bodied. the black and blue fruit dance playfully on the palate with fantastic freshness to lift the bold flavors and a superb frame of ripe. velvety tannins. It finishes very long and with amazing zing. So tempting to drink now. but make no mistake—this is one for the long haul!

Fresh earth. truffle. sous bois and attractively ripe blueberry and plum aromas here. It’s a bold and very pure. primary wine here for now. yet this has great potential. The palate reveals beautifully ripe red-plum and cherry flavors with a powerful tannin statement that carries impressive depth and scale on the finish. Give this time. Try from 2023.

The 2017 Bélair-Monange was so impressive out of barrel and now in bottle. I see no reason to alter my appreciation. It has a very intense bouquet. one that is reassuringly complex. especially in context of what was a rather ordinary growing season with copious red cherries. boysenberry. hints of iodine and a light terracotta scent. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are surprisingly rigid at the moment. suggesting that this will be a long term Saint-Émilion. There is a beguiling sense of symmetry. very mineral-driven towards the finish that has impressive sapidity. This comes highly recommended although it deserves five or six years in bottle. Bravo Christian and Edouard Moueix.

100% Merlot gewachsen auf 2 Ha in unmittelbarer Sichtweite zu Le Pin und Vieux Chateau Certan. Mittlere bis volle Dichte. im Kern schwarz. schöne satte Frucht in der Nase. sehr feine Kirsche. auch hier wurde der Neuholzanteil zurückgefahren. trotzdem findet man diese zart süsslichen Anklänge wieder. Am Gaumen mit Kühle. sehr gute Harmonie keine Spur von Hitze. polierte Tannine. wieder diese unglaublich mineralische Frische. die nur dieses Terroir im Pomerol bieten kann. Würde man in die Wertung das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis einfliessen lassen. so müsste man deutlich höher punkten.

So ist und bleibt Haut Tropchaud 2018 auch in diesem herausfordernden JG eines der unglaublichsten Schnäppchen.
