The 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 41% Cabernet Franc. 39% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 65% new and 35% one-year-old oak for 22 months. This is one of the largest percentages of Cabernet Franc for this wine this vintage. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it gives notes of kirsch, black raspberries and black plums with touches of cassis, violets, chocolate box and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, grainy and lively with loads of layers and a long, well-poised finish.

The 2016 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Breathtaking in its beauty, the 2016 soars from the glass with stunning aromatic and flavor intensity. Red cherry jam. wild flowers, mint, blood orange and sage are some of many notes that develop. In the glass, the 2016 is a vivid, statuesque, exotic wine that takes over all the senses as it delivers tons of pure pleasure. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2016 for at least a few years, but that will be virtually impossible. The 2016 is a towering masterpiece from Les Carmes Haut-Brion and Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier. Tasted three times.

Terrific ripeness, depth and complexity on offer here. This has a very attractive array of bright, ripe blueberries and cassis with some leafy and earthy notes. The palate has a quite deep, long and vibrant array of perfectly ripe dark plums and blueberries. So good. Best vintage this decade. Try from 2023.

Cuvee: 39 Cabernet Franc / 41 Merlot / 20 Cabernet SauvignonErntezeitpunkt: zwischen 13. September und 28. September. DIe Pflanzdichte beträgt bis zu 10.000 Reben je Hektar / der Ertrag in diesem Jahrgang lag bei 37hl je ha / die Reben sind im Schnitte 41 Jahre alt. Die Nase ist super komplex, etwas Zwetschge, kleine reife Kirsche, feines Holz, eine schöne Kühle (Minze), nasser Stein. Am Gaumen sehr kompakt, dicht gewoben, baut sich toll auf, das Tannin ist sehr strukturiert und reif. Auch im Finale sehr klar bleibend, wie Samt am Gaumen, frisch, lang. Das ist zwar kein neuer Meilenstein, aber eine weitere Dimension auf jeden Fall. Verkostungsnotiz auf dem Chateau am 03.04.2019 96-98 - Verkostungsnotiz vom 01.04.2019 95-97. Mittlere Dichte, sehr offene und klare Nase, tolles Spiel von dunkler und frischer rotbeeriger Frucht. Am Gaumen vital und frisch, ohne jegliche Schwere und dennoch sehr präsent und lang im Finale. Tolle Balance und Harmonie. 95-97 Punkte.

The 2018 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a rock star of a wine and is based on a unique blend of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 29% Merlot that was brought up in 80% new French oak. Offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, chocolate, violets, damp earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with a full-bodied yet almost understated, building style that carries ripe, supple tannins, gorgeous amounts of smoky black fruits, and an endearing, layered, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. A dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, it is far from unapproachable today yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age for the fireworks to develop and will have 50-years or more of longevity! Hats off to Guillaume Pouthier for a magical, seamless, singular beauty!

The essence of black fruit here, offering blackberry and brambleberry aromas with dried flowers and licorice. Crushed stones and some iodine, as well as nuts. Full-bodied palate that opens and delivers an encompassing mouth feel of fine, creamy tannins. Some whole-berry fermentation. A special wine with elegance and complexity. Try after 2026, but already so in tune.

The 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is composed of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot. It was made using 52% whole cluster and has 13.75% alcohol. It was aged in 75% new oak barriques, 16% foudres and 9% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little coaxing before bursting from the glass with vibrant scents blackberry preserves, redcurrant jelly, mulberries and Black Forest cake, leading to an undercurrent of pencil lead, black truffles, cast-iron pan and charcoal with an emerging waft of violets. The elegantly crafted, medium-bodied palate dances with red and black fruits before bursting into earth and mineral sparks. It has a sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and savory. The stem tannins lend this wine a firmness and textural interest, which should integrate further with another 5-6 years in barrel, allowing the nuances to shine through even more, then you can continue to enjoy its slow evolution for a further 30+ years

The 2018 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total knock-out, just as it was from barrel. Soaring in its aromatic intensity, Les Carmes dazzles from the very first taste. Inky red fruits, mocha, new leather, licorice, dried flowers, sage and mint envelop all the senses. Today, the 2018 appears to be slightly closed, but time brings out tons of aromatic energy and nuance. Cabernet Franc plays the leading role, unusual for this part of the region. Franc aromatics and a fair amount of whole cluster savoriness lend energy but also a feeling of richness without weight that is especially appealing. This is a masterpiece from Les Carmes Haut-Brion and Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier.

What a great nose with such complexity of blackberry, forest floor, mushroom and bark. Like walking in a deep forest. Full-bodied with a dense palate, yet it remains energetic and focused. Very fine texture. Flavorful finish. Extremely persistent. Fantastic young 2019. Try after 2028.

Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier turned out another stellar wine with the 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion. Elegant, polished and wonderfully nuanced to the core, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Whole clusters enhance a whole range of Cabernet Franc inflections in a wine that is immediately seductive. On the palate, the 2019 is creamy and textured. Plum, blood orange, spice, mocha and dried herbs lend an exotic quality that is so alluring. The 2019 is a mysterious, totally seductive wine that no one who is serious about Bordeaux will want to miss. To be sure, Les Carmes is far from typical, but it is incredibly unique. Its longevity is likely to be measured in multiples of decades. Quite simply, I loved it.

The 2019 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has turned out very well in bottle. Mingling aromas of plums and cassis with notions of blood orange, warm spices and new oak, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit that's framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, expansive finish, it's reminiscent of a more giving, extroverted version of Pouthier's superb 2016. As is now the rule at this address, some whole bunches were retained during maceration, and the wine saw a long élevage in a variety of vessels, from classic 225-liter Bordeaux barriques to foudres and amphorae. The blend is dominated by 42% Cabernet Franc, complemented by 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Merlot.

Der C des Carmes Haut Brion ist einfach ein fantastischer Weinwert. Jeder redet zwar über das Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion, aber ein weiterer Teil der unglaublichen Erfolgsgeschichte die hier im Zusammenhang steht, haben noch zu wenige auf dem Radar! Diesen ebenso unglaublich guten Wein der sich von einem Hoch zum anderen hangelt, dürfen Sie einfach nicht verpassen. Er wird nicht en Primeur vermarktet und tritt demzufolge erst später in Erscheinung, dennoch wird er immer zu den Primeursproben gezeigt. Oft verlassen wir das Weingut mit einem breiten Grinsen und freuen uns auf den nächsten Release des C des Carmes. Denn was man hier für deutlich unter 40€ bekommt ist immer eine wahre Freude für die Geschmackspapillen. Genuss wird bei diesem feinen und so balancierten Pessac Leognan gross geschrieben. Die Cuvee besteht aus zwei drittel Cabernet und 1 drittel Merlot, mit Varianzen in den Jahrgängen. Der Ausbau erfolgt über 20% in neuen Fässern und die 80% in gebrauchten Fässern. Und wenn ich Ihnen jetzt noch verrate, dass sich das selbe Team um diesen Wein kümmert wie es das auch bei Chateau Carmes Haut Brion tut, sollten Sie mir versprechen, nicht zu viel die Werbetrommel für diesen Geheimtipp zu schlagen, denn sonst kann es das bald gewesen sein mit diesem Bargain Tipp aus Pessac.

A fruity and bright red with cherries, redcurrants and sea salt. Medium to full body. Lovely tannins that are melted in the wine. Juicy and dynamic. 100% whole cluster fermentation. From vineyards in Pessac Leognan. This is really fantastic and so energetic. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

Bottled after 24 months' élevage, much of which took place in large foudres, the 2020 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and spices complemented by hints of rose petal and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, supple and pillowy, with an ample core of fruit framed by melting tannins, it's a suave and charming blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot.
