Opaque purple-black in color, the 2020 Grand Mayne slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal gorgeous notions of ripe black plums, dark chocolate-covered cherries and blackberry pie, plus hints of licorice, cracked black pepper and unsmoked cigars with a touch of tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of rich black fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and beautifully perfumed.

The 2020 Grand Mayne is focused and delineated on a nose that offers plenty of finely chiseled scents of black cherry, bilberry, crushed rock and incense, opulent but beautifully controlled. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit on the entry, and laced with graphite, touches of tobacco and minerals. From beginning to end, this 2020 displays wonderful tension, and there is a sense of refinement on the finish that I think has only manifested in vintages of Grand Mayne over the last 5–6 years. This delivers, or perhaps overdelivers considering the price.

Sowohl William Kelley vom Wineadvocate als auch Antonio Galloni von Vinous haben das Chateau Franc Mayne im JG 2020 dramatisch aufgewertet gegenüber den verhaltenen Fassproben. Bei Parker ging es von 91-93 rauf auf glatte 94 Punkte und bei Antonio Galloni von Vinous sogar noch dramatisch mehr. Von 89-91 Punkten als Fassmuster auf glatte 96 Punkte, es gibt sehr wenige Weine die das überhaupt jemals geschafft haben. Auffällig ist das sich beim Chateau Franc Mayne viele Verkoster einig sind, dass die jüngst erzeugten Qualitäten hier massiv nach oben zeigen,

Auch ich konnte den Franc Mayne 2020 auf der Prowein in Düsseldorf nachverkosten und ich kann Ihnen versichern es ist kein Zufall, dass die Verkoster das Weingut neu und höher bewerten. Es geht hier wirklich bergauf, wollen wir hoffen, dass die Preise nicht so kometenhaft steigen wie die gebotene Qualität.

Von einem Weingut, das in letzter Zeit eine unglaubliche Erfolgsserie hatte – vor allem dank der Talente von Direktor David Suire – zeigt der 2020 Château Laroque den kühleren, kalksteinbetonten Stil des Terroirs auf wunderschöne Weise. Er präsentiert eine klare, fokussierte Stilistik mit dunklen (fast bläulichen) Beerenfrüchten, kreidiger Mineralität, Veilchen, Gewürzen und floralen Nuancen. Am Gaumen mittelkräftig, ist dieser fokussierte, gradlinige und bemerkenswert reine Saint-Émilion von großartiger Tiefe im Mittelgaumen und einem hervorragenden Abgang. Er sollte, wenn möglich, für solide 4–5 Jahre im Keller verborgen bleiben und wird eine Langlebigkeit von 30 Jahren haben. Wenn er schon bald getrunken wird, sollte er für eine Stunde in der Karaffe belüftet werden.

Der 2020 Laroque ist sehr gelungen und entfaltet Aromen von Kirschen, minzigen Brombeeren, Lakritz und Lorbeerblatt. Mittel- bis vollmundig, samtig und vielschichtig, mit guter Tiefe im Kern, kreidigen, aber fein strukturierten Tanninen und einem salinen Abgang. Eine weitere starke Leistung für diesen aufstrebenden Star aus Saint-Émilion.

Der 2020 Laroque ist sogar besser als die en primeur Probe. Dunkel und umhüllend, mit Tonnen von Klasse, Laroque ist ein Gewinner. Fleischige dunkle Pflaume, Kies, Gewürze, Menthol, Lakritze und Pfeifentabak geben den 2020 Tonnen Nuancen. Laroque ist personifizierter. Der Winzer David Suire macht hier wichtige Arbeit.

The 2020 Teyssier is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot was picked from September 15th to October 1st, and the Cabernet Franc from September 30th to October 8th. It has an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.5. It is aging in French oak barrels, 25% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with exuberant notes of baked red and black plums, blackberry preserves and mulberries, plus touches of hoisin, licorice and lilacs. The medium-bodied palate delivers a great intensity of black fruits with an approachable, soft texture and a racy line, finishing refreshing.

Petit Figeac 2020 Saint Emilion

Der Petit Figeac ist eine kleine Rarität weil er in dem JG 2020 nur in sehr kleinen Mengen produziert wurde. Der Zweitwein von Chateau Figeac besteht aus Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon und Merlot, im Prinzip so wie auch der Grand Vin auf Figeac. Für den Petit Figeac werden aber auch die jüngeren Reben verwendet, meistens zeigen sich diese fruchtbetonter und vitaler. Auf Chateau Figeac wurde ja in den letzten Jahren sehr viel geändert inklusiver einer komplett neuen Kellerei, aber eben auch im Weinberg. Die Qualität des Petit Figeac ist wirklich stark angestiegen in den letzten Jahren, hier profitiert der "Kleine" von dem stetigen Streben der Besitzer nach dem besten und vor allem der höchsten Klassifizierung die ja in 2022 erreicht wurde. Man ist nun mit Chateau Pavie der einzige Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe A, nachdem Cheval Blanc, Ausone und auch das Chateau Angelus sich haben nicht mehr klassifizieren lassen. Der Jahrgang 2020 führt beim Petit Figeac quasi zu einer Grand Vin Qualität und zeigt sich im Glas mit einer verführerischen Kirschfrucht, etwas Mokka und zarte rote Paprike gesellt sich hinzu, das wirklich angenehme feine Tannin läd schon zum früheren Geniessen ein. Hier gilt auch wieder die goldene Regel, in grossen Jahren kleine oder eben Zweitweine kaufen, erst Recht wenn Figeac auf dem Etikett steht.

The 2020 Figeac is the finest wine that has been bottled to date at this estate since its renaissance began a decade ago. Wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries and raspberries mingled with cigar wrapper, pencil shavings, licorice and black truffles, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a suave, harmonious profile, vibrant acids, and beautifully refined structuring tannins. This sapid, complex wine represents the essence of this great terroir. Two years after extensive soil studies of the estate were carried out, and the first growing season to see cover crops used in the vineyards year-round, the 2020 benefited from more coherently demarcated parcels and more precise élevage, which taken together help to account for its edge over the excellent 2019.

Straight-up awesome aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, iron, spring flowers, and an almost bloody, salty character emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied, with a seamless mouthfeel, gorgeous tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and absolutely perfectly integrated oak. It's still tight and reserved, which is certainly the vintage, so do your best to hide these in the cellar. It should hit the early stages of its prime drinking window in 8-10 years and will have 30+ of overall longevity. It will unquestionably flirt with perfection at maturity.
