Chateau d Aiguilhe Cotes de Castillon

Das Château d'Aiguilhe befindet sich auf den höchsten Anhöhen entlang des rechten Dordogne-Ufers, an der Grenze zwischen den Côtes de Castillon und Saint-Emilion. 50 der insgesamt 110 Hektar des Gutes dienen dem Weinbau. Die ausschließlich auf den oberen Kuppen der Hänge liegenden Weinberge profitieren von einer natürlichen Drainage und einer ausgezeichneten Sonneneinstrahlung dank ihrer insgesamt südlichen Ausrichtung.

Die tonkalk- und tonlösshaltigen Böden bilden eine dünne, eher karge Schicht, die auf einer Kalkunterlage ruht. Diese sorgt zu jeder Jahreszeit für eine besonders gute Regulierung des Wasserhaushaltes. Dieses Terroir in Verbindung mit dem Durchschnittsalter der Weinberge (28 Jahre) bilden hervorragende Voraussetzungen für den Weinbau. Die herrliche Mineralität der Tonkalkböden lässt einen Wein entstehen, der Kraft und Finesse in sich vereint. Die Rondeur des Merlot (80%) verschmilzt mit der Dichte und der Komplexität des Cabernet Franc (20%). Das Ergebnis ist ein Lagerwein, der jedoch nach Karaffierung bereits ab dem 5. oder 6. Jahr getrunken werden kann.

The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The 2019 d'Aiguilhe has a really lovely bouquet of ample black cherry, mulberry and light floral scents, very pure and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with cedar-infused red fruit. While not as exuberant as the aromatics, this is nicely detailed and quite poised on the finish. No, I still cannot pronounce its name, but this Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux is well worth seeking out.

A terrific effort from this large and immaculately maintained property on the clay-limestone slopes of the Côtes de Castillon, the 2019 d'Aiguilhe exhibits aromas of cherries and cassis mingled with notions of burning embers, licorice and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a mineral finish, it's intelligently matured in tank and large-format oak as well as small barriques.

A shot of sharp intense strawberry and raspberry fruit hits the palate, super succulent and instantly mouthwatering, quite lean and linear though there is a nice expansion of fruit flavours while the tannins stay quite firm and straight. Touching on austere and severe but the softly plump juiciness keeps this enjoyable and there is layering of elements. Acidity is on the prominent side but this is quite captivating with crunchy, bright, just-ripe red fruits and chalky texture on the finish. Yield: 35 hl/ha. 30% new oak barrels.
