A fruity and floral garnacha with bright cherries, ripe strawberries, slate, potpourri and roasted spices. Intense and medium-bodied with velvety tannins that round the juicy berries and flowers on the palate. There’s a coffee-candy note in the finish that will need another year to integrate better. Yet, it’s very drinkable even now.

Nach abgeschlossener Fermentation geht es für 5 Monate in neue französische. speziell bordelaiser Eiche. Die Reben entstammen einem in den Bergen hoch gelegenen, alten Garnachaweinberg und bringen bedingt durch ihr Alter nur recht geringe Erträge. Neue Welt trifft auf die Alte

Allein die Farbe, mit welcher der Bodegas Borsao Zarihs 2019 ins Glas geht, ist betörend: ein tief dunkles Purpurrot mit Violettreflexen. In der Nase unverkennbar Shiraz, intensive Aromen von dunklen Früchten und Backpflaumen, zu denen sich leichte Kaffeeröstaromen gesellen, abgerundet von einem Hauch Vanille, welcher sich mit etwas Zeit im Glas zu einer delikaten Note dunkler Schokolade entwickelt. Beim ersten Schluck merkt man es dann, den Syrah, den anderen Stil: festes Tannin trotz weicher Textur. Noten von Süßholz und - ganz zart - ein wenig Leder. Der Bodegas Borsao Zarihs 2019 schlägt die Brücke zweier Weinstile aus einer Rebsorte. vereint alte und neue Welt in sich und begeistert mit dem Besten von beiden.

Fakten zum Wein:
Der Bodegas Borsao Zarihs 2019 ist der fünfte Jahrgang des erfolgreichen Kooperationsprojekts von José Luis Chueca (Bodegas Borsao) und Chris Ringland. einer der Winzerikonen aus Übersee, besonders umtriebig in Australien. Name und Etikett spiegeln die unterschiedliche Typizität und die verschiendene Bezeichnung der Traube Syrah (in Frankreich und ges. alte Welt) / Shiraz (in Australien und ges. neue Welt) wider. Typisch für den Syrah der alten Welt ist die rauchige, leicht animalische Note mit Aromen von Süßholz. Leder und die kernige Struktur, Kaffeearomen. Noten von Dörrobst wie Backpflaumen, die weiche Textur und die Vanillenote des neuen Holzes spiegeln die Oppulenz des Shiraz der neuen Welt wider. Der Bodegas Borsao Zarihs 2019 - ein hervorragend gelungenes Projekt, zwei Stile perfekt in einem Wein zu vereinen, der mit allen Faccetten begeistert.

Der Jahrgang 2019 wurde noch nicht bewertet. Zum 2017er Zarihs vermerkte Josh Raynolds für Vinous im Februar 2021: "Gesättigtes Violett. Dunkle Beeren, kandierte Lakritze, Vanille und ein würziger Akzent von schwarzem Pfeffer in der von Eiche gewürzten Nase. Geschmeidig und ansprechend süß, mit Aromen von reifen Brombeeren und Kirschlikör, die von Andeutungen von Vanille und Blumenpastillen begleitet werden. Breit, fleischig und ansprechend marmeladig, im Abgang sehr lang und weich, mit einer wiederkehrenden Vanillenote und sich langsam aufbauenden Tanninen."

Sweet coffee, chocolate and smoke to the tarry black cherries. A full-bodied syrah with firm tannins that provide some chew to the back of the palate, before a slightly warming finish. Give it one more year to come around. The woody sweetness and tannins are a little dominating now. Drink in 2024.

A pretty nose of strawberries, cassis, flowers, incense, chocolate wafer and chestnuts. Medium-to full-bodied with lots of juicy strawberries, rounded by fine tannins. Juicy and bright. Garnacha and some syrah. Drink now.

Beim ersten hineinschnuppern wird klar: hier dominieren die schwarze, reife Kirsche und die roten Waldfrüchte des Garnacha, die dem kleinen Teil Shiraz kaum eine Chance lassen. Erst im Mund zeigt er sich mit einem Anklang von Süßholz, gibt etwas Struktur. Ebenso der 14 monatige Ausbau in französicher Eiche, was den Bodegas Borsao Berola 2016 herrlich abrundet, fester im Tannin macht und ihm einen zarten Hauch eines Schokoladenfinishs bescherrt.

Die Geschichte drum herum:
Berola ist der Name des Klosters von Veruela und geht zurück auf das 12. Jahrhundert. Pedro de Atarés schenkte den ansässigen Mönchen ein Stück Land, auf welchem sie ihre Zisterne errichteten und auf einer kleinen Parzelle Wein anbauten. Dies ist der Ursprung des heutigen Weinanbaugebiets Campo de Borja. Bodegas Borsao Berola - eine Hommage an Geschichte. Tradition und Heimat.

"Mastery and Elegance"

So die Überschrift von Borsao über ihren Cabriola 2017. Die 20 bis 60 Jahre alten Weinreben stehen in einer Höhe von 350 bis 700 Metern auf steinigen, kiesigen und kalkhaltigen, schluffig-lehmigen Böden. Die Gärung der einzelnen Rebsorten erfolgt getrennt in Edelstahltanks bei einer kontrollierten Temperatur von 24º-28ºC. Der Wein reift 12 Monate in Fässern aus französischer und amerikanischer Eiche. Verkostungsnotiz des Wingutes: Elegante rubin- und granatrote Farbe mit einem sehr tiefen Kirschrot. Aromen von Vanille mit intensiven fruchtigen Noten und weichen Tanninen, die vom Holz stammen. Der Nachgeschmack ist lang und angenehm, sehr harmonisch, perfekt strukturiert und fleischig.

The 2020 Albacea is 100% Monastrell from dry-farmed and head-pruned estate vineyards fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks and matured in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for four months. 2020 is a great vintage of full ripeness and development of aromas and flavors. This has 14.5% alcohol, a textbook example, fresh and fruit-driven, with grip, fine tannins and a serious profile. It has less oak and especially less toasty notes and aromas. They also introduced some optical sorting of the grapes, even for this price range. 48,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2021. This was the old yellow-label Juan Gil before, though it is still sold as such in some markets.

Nach dem Ausbau erhalten Sie einen Wein mizt sehr guter bis kräftiger Konzentration. Sein Ausbau fand über 18 Monate in einer sorgfältigen Auswahl von französischen und amerikanischen Fässern statt.

Intensive kirschrote Farbe mit granatrotem Rand und kräftigem Aroma von schwarzen Früchten, Röst- und balsamische Noten. Komplex und gut strukturiert, geschmeidig und reif, angenehm am Gaumen und sehr anhaltend, mit Röst-, Kakao- und Gewürznoten. Ausgewogen und harmonisch, schmackhaft und mit einem langen, eleganten Abgang, der von der "Süße" edler Tannine aus sehr reifen Früchten geprägt ist, die ihr Potenzial in der Flasche zeigen.

I also tasted the 2019 Juan Gil (blue label), the wine formerly known as 18 Months, the time it spends in barrel. They use 100% new oak that is a mixture of French and American. The wine is ripe, oaky and heady (15.5% alcohol), but I felt a change in the oak, which seemed more integrated. When I asked Miguel Gil, he told me they had changed the toast, using less toasted barrels, from medium+ to medium, and that shows in the wine. They still believe this wine should have new oak to give it aging potential. They have also introduced optical sorting of the grapes and eliminate the raisins (by shape) and the unripe grains (by color), and that adds precision and cleanliness. 30.000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

The organic Garnacha 2019 La Montesa fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats and matured in barriques for 12 months. As it was very recently bottled, I tasted from two bottles, one uncorked the day before and the other uncorked just before the tasting. The bottle from the day before was more expressive in the nose, but I also liked the austerity of the just-opened bottle. The wine is concentrated and powerful, richer and more concentrated than the 2018, with more density and ripe flavors. It has a medium-bodied palate with very fine tannins. The 800,000 kilos of grapes were hand harvested and selected, trying to avoid very ripe grapes to control the degrees of alcohol, with natural acidity, and the wine is lively and pure, with measured oak. The colors in all the reds are bright ruby, not too dark, and the fruit is red rather than black, despite the warmer and drier year. It has the very fine tannins of the Garnacha in limestone soils. 660,600 bottles and 10,000 magnums produced.

Dieser Wein ist ein toller Einstieg in die spanische Welt des Rioja. Trinkfreudig, dunkel im Glas und noch nicht zu fordernd. Mittlere Länge, eher weiche Tannine und durcjhweg fruchtig.
Für den Jahrgang 2021 gab James Suckling durchaus beachtliche 90 Punkte. "Lebendig und frisch mit rassigen Erdbeeren, zerdrückten Himbeeren und einem Hauch von Zement und Blumen. Knackig und hell mit einem saftigen, mittleren Körper, abgerundet durch weiche, leichte Tannine. Fruchtig und gut ausbalanciert, sofort ansprechend. Jetzt genießen."

BEST EVER für den Wineadvocate.
From a beautifully situated hillside vineyard, sandwiched between Larcis Ducasse and Tertre Roteboeuf on either side, with holdings belonging to Pavie and Troplong Mondot on the plateau above, the 2019 Bellefont Belcier has turned out very well indeed. Offering up aromas of smoky berry fruit, loamy soil, subtle spices, black truffle and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a vibrant, enveloping profile and a long, penetrating finish. This is a terrific effort, though given the thoughtful farming and program of replanting that is underway at this long-neglected estate, I suspect it only hints at what is to come as Jean-Christophe Meyrou and his team get to work.

The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier is a wine of tremendous reserve. The 35% Cabernet Franc comes through in the wine's aromatic profile and overall feel. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2019 needs time to come together. It is a seriously impressive wine with tons of character. I have long admired Bellefont-Belcier for its potential. In the past, the tannins were simply overpowering, if the 2019 is any indication, that might be less of an issue going forward.

The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier was very impressive from barrel, and I have no reason to change that view in bottle. This is beautifully defined on the nose, which features vivacious red fruit laced with graphite and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins, fine tension and an almost pastille-like, graphite-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb.

The 2019 Pavie Macquin has turned out very well indeed, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, cherries, burning embers, black truffle and licorice, framed by a deft framing of new oak that's more discreet than was the case even a few vintages back. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit, powdery, chalky tannins and a long, penetrating, youthfully firm finish. Tasted alongside older vintages, it's clear that the Thienpont team have eased off extraction, which allows the quality of fruit that this fantastic vineyard produces to express itself all the more completely, delivering the finest Pavie Macquin since 1998.

The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window.

It is perhaps less luxuriant than I found this last year from barrel and has become slightly more linear, displaying a touch more breeding and precision. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a fabulous Saint-Julien with huge potential. 14.18% alcohol

Kraftvoll, sauber und komplex

Der gelungene Einstiegs-Monastrell von der Gil-Estate. Die Trauben für den Juan Gil Monastrell Yellow Label Jumilla DOP 2021 stammen aus den Weinbergen rund um der Kellerei auf einer Höhe von 700 Metern nordöstlich von Jumilla. Dieser Wein hat eine intensive und lebendige kirschrote Farbe. In der Nase ausgestattet mit sehr attraktiven Fruchtaromen, Noten von reifen Früchten aber auch Anklängen an neues Holz. Im Mund gut strukturiert, lebendig und schmackhaft, vollmundig, ausgewogen, mit einem angenehmen Abgang und sehr gutem Nachhall.

Der Jahrgang 2021 wurde noch nicht bewertet, aber die 89 Punkte von James Suckling für den 2020er Etiqueta Amarilla sind in diesem Preissegment schon beachtlich. Der Paleo 2017 Rosso aus der Region Bolgheri ist eine weitere Schöpfung im Le Macchiole Sortiment. Der Paleo Rosso 2017 von Le Macchiole ist ein aus 100% Cabernet Franc vinifizierter Rotwein, der stets ein paar Jahre brauch um zu voller Grosse aufzusteigen. Als erstes Weingut in der Bolgheri wagte es damals Le Macchiole einen reinen Cabernet Franc zu kreieren, den Paleo Rosso. Es passt sehr gut in die Philosophie des Weinguts Le Macchiole rebsortenreine Weine zu erzeugen. Neben dem Scrio einem reinen Syrah und dem Messorio einem reinen Merlot ist der Paleo Rosso der dritte im Bunde eben aus 100% Cabernet Franc. Sicherlich ist der Messorio der teuerste Wein im Portfolio, der wahre Star und auch der wohl wichtigste Wein bei Le Macchiole ist der Paleo Rosso. In einigen Jahren übertrumpft der Paleo dann auch den Messorio der oft mehr als das doppelte des Paleo kostet.

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

The 2017 Paleo Rosso is superb. It is also the wine in this range that seems to have handled the rigors of 2017 best. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan Coast. The aromatics alone are so alluring. Sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar give Paleo its aromatic lift. Some varietal character has been baked out because of the heat of the year. In exchange, readers will find a Paleo Rosso that will drink well with just a year or two in bottle. The 2017 was fermented in cement and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 90% new with light toast.

You could argue that this wine changed Italian wine, because it was the first to fully embrace the potential of Cabernet Franc in the bel paese. The Le Macchiole 2018 Paleo has a spicy and tangy personality with dark fruit, bitter chocolate and tarry smoke. Coming back to my open bottle 24 hours later, I got some green olive and rosemary essence. The mouthfeel fleshes out considerably, and there is beautiful structure to hold it firmly together. Other vintners in Bolgheri have told me of their difficulties with Cabernet Franc in the 2018 vintage, which saw rain toward the end of the season. This wine feels magically immune to those issues and probably means that the expert vineyard team harvested at the right moment.
