Beschreibung

Die Einzellage Steingrube liegt in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zum Ortsgemeinde Westhofen. Bereits 1295 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, weist der Flurname auf einen ehemaligen Steinbruch hin. Bildet pleistozäner Löss die Hauptbodenart, so findet sich hier auch der rare Terra Rossa. Entstanden aus den tertiären Meeresablagerungen eines Kalkalgenriffs, verfügt der heute zu Rotlehm verwitterte Boden über beste Eigenschaften für den Anbau von Weinreben. Auch der Sauvignon Blanc läuft hier, insbesondere unter der Obhut von Winzerin Gesine Roll, zur Bestform auf. Von einer anziehenden Nase "mit Stachelbeere, Papaya, Passionsfrucht und rosafarbener Grapefruit, rötliche Noten, mineralische Anklänge. Am Gaumen mit Zug und ausgewogener Säure, vielschichtig und mit mineralischem Verve" spricht der Falstaff im Weinguide Deutschland 2022. 92+ Punkte. Die von James Suckling noch getoppt werden:

A shining sauvignon blanc star that leaps out of the glass at you, although it’s still very young. Complex cassis and citrus-zest nose with a slew of herbal nuances. Concentrated and racy on the medium-bodied palate, the herbal and wet-stone character building at the long, intense finish. From this producer’s oldest sauvignon blanc vines, planted 20 years ago. Drinkable now, but best from 2022. Screw cap.

Vinified in barriques (new to three years old) and 500-liter oak barrels, Gesine’s 2019 Chardonnay Réserve exhibits intense and elegant Chardonnay fruit intertwined with fine oak and mineral aromas of crushed stones. Tight and still with firm (oak) tannins on the palate, this is a fresh, round, refined and elegant Chardonnay with a long and vital as well as remarkably salty, tight-knit finish that is, however, still dominated by the oak influence but doubtlessly promising. I’d cellar this wine for four or five years at least. Bottled in July this year. Tasted in August 2021.

The 2021 Chardonnay Réserve is beautifully pure, refined and elegant on the nose that is intense but mineral instead of fruity and beautifully saline and citric. Aged on the lees for 18 months in 500-liter tonneaux, this is a round and fruity, very elegant and balanced Chardonnay with a stringent, intense and finely tannic finish that is also saline and citric. All in all, the wine still has more flesh, fruit intensity and texture than the terroir deserves, I find. But this is a personal remark regarding the style of a wine that is of excellent quality. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August 2023.

The 60% new oak is neatly integrated. The palate shows real vivacity and tension on the entry and delivers crunchy black fruit, touches of blue fruit and a little iodine. There is definitely is more substance compared to previous vintages, and I wager that this represents the best Branaire-Ducru in recent years. 13.7% alcohol

Lange ist es her, dass uns ein "kleiner" Bordeaux so sehr begeistert hat wie dieser 2020iger Chateau Marjosse. Schon in den Primeurproben stach dieser Wein mit einer sehr guten Leistung heraus. Jetzt,nachdem wir die ersten abgefüllten Flaschen im Laden haben, konnten wir unser Interesse nicht zügeln und haben direkt verkostet. Unglaublich kompakte Aromatik, viel dunkle Frucht, auch etwas kühl Würziges zeigt sich im Hintergrund. Klar ist bei diesem Wein der Merlot tonangebend, eben mit dieser fast schon verschwenderischen Frucht, durch einen guten Anteil an Cabernet Franc verfügt der Wein über Frische, Tannin und würzige Tiefe. Cabernet Franc, der heimliche Star am rechten Ufer des Bordeaux. Wenn sich dann auch noch einer der erfahrendsten und besten Winemaker verantwortlich zeigt, muss am Ende schon was gutes bei rauskommen. Aber "gut" wäre bei diesem Wein eine wirkliche Untertreibung. Bitte verpassen Sie diesen Wein nicht, denn was kann es Schöneres geben, als sorgenlos eine Flasche nach der anderen öffenn zu können ohne sich Sorgen um das Weinbudget machen zu müssen.

Hints of leather. smoke. tobacco and dried flowers begin to open up in the glass. but the 2016 is quite reticent at this stage. In two tastings I found the 2016 unusually closed. Needless to say. it will be interesting to see what time brings.

It doesn't have the mid-palate density or opulence of the 2018, but it’s more pretty, focused, and straight on the palate. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

It revealed precocious yet controlled blackberry and blueberry fruit scents, with that violet component still intact. The tannins have not lost any of their grippiness or assertiveness. This is a Saint-Émilion that is in for the long haul. Great potential.

Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new barrels (the balance is in second- and third-fill oak), it offers a full-bodied, incredibly pure, balanced style revealing subtle oak, terrific darker, almost blue fruits, lots of chocolate, leafy herb and mineral nuances, and gorgeous tannins. It's worth pointing out that this will be the last vintage made by the talented Jérôme Aguirre. This terrific Saint-Emilion will evolve for two decades.
