Wonderfully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a kiss of background oak, this rock star Côtes Du Rhône should be purchased by the case.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan. Grenache. Mourvèdre and Syrah. It's a full-bodied. silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty. earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.

There was only one 32-hectoliter foudre (now bottled) of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues, an all-Grenache cuvée vinified with 50% whole clusters. It's floral and herbal on the nose, with bold flavors of blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it boasts supple tannins balanced by hints of brine and fresh acids. It's easily the equal of many Châteauneufs and the price has crept up to reflect that.

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc. Clairette. Grenache Blanc. Roussanne and Viognier. all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel. with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean. zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Christophe wore his customary. irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match. and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest." he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power. finesse and acidity." Interestingly. the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines. which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)

Much more powerful and closed, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes more from the La Crau and La Janasse lieux-dits and is the usual blend of mostly Grenache with a touch of Syrah. Blackberries, graphite, scorched earth, pepper, and sappy garrigue all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, has beautiful concentration, polished tannins, and a great finish. Nothing is out of place, and this perfectly balanced, authoritative, powerful, and incredibly impressive 2020 will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It's never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with "a Grenache lover's dream." This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.

Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy. mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.

Morgendliche Handlese in Kisten mit Sortierung im Weinberg. Pneumatisches Pressen, dann Weinbereitung in Fässern.

Reifung:
Auf Sedimenten, 60 % in Tanks und 40 % in Fässern (einschließlich 1/4 neues Holz) unter Aufrühren, für 6 Monate.

Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC 2018

Ein majestätischer Wein, intensiv und ätherisch, mit Noten von Lorbeer und eingelegten Kirschen.

Die Trauben werden 4 Monate lang getrocknet und erst im Januar gepresst. Es folgt eine langsame Gärung mit Hautkontakt und eine 36-monatige Reifung in großformatigen Slawonischen Fässern.
Anschließend wird er in der Flasche gelagert, bevor er auf den Markt kommt.

Very aromatic, pushing out aromas of dried red and black fruit, including dried blueberries and dates, together with a nice, spicy layer of nutmeg and pressed flowers. Full-bodied with an amazingly harmonious texture to the palate, thanks to the dense, very fine tannins that also provide super length. There’s a bright, saline mineral note that kicks in and pushes the finish even further. Exquisite Amarone. Drink or hold.

Françoise and Stéphane Dief's 16.5 hectares of vines in the northern part of the Médoc were decimated in 2020 by frost, and their 2020 Clos Manou comes from dismal yields of just 26 hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 57% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It has an incredible sense of minerality and almost salinity to go with impressive red and black fruits, notes of smoked tobacco and flowers, medium to full body, and integrated acidity. It's clearly an outstanding wine that's going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming decade or so.

Gelungener Spagat zwischen dem traditionellen und dem modernen Priorat

Das Clos del Portal, auch Portal del Priorat genannt, erlebte seinen Wiederaufbau im Jahr 2001. Heute umfasst es mehr als 50 Hektar im Dorf El Lloar, von denen mehr oder weniger die Hälfte aus Weinbergen und der Rest aus Oliven- und Mandelbaumkulturen besteht, umgeben von mediterranem Wald. Mit seinem kontinuierlichen ökologischen Weinbau, der sich in Richtung Biodynamik bewegt, ist es ein Beispiel für Biodiversität. Strenge, trockenes Klima und extreme Bedingungen. Die Weinberge, halb in Terrassen, halb in Hängen, liegen in einer zerklüfteten Orographie, in einer Abfolge von Bergrücken und Klippen der verschiedenen Berge. Der Keller und der Rest der Gebäude sind eine Verlängerung der Landschaft, die sich fast nahtlos in die Topographie einfügt.

Der Weingut Gerhard Klein Blanc de Noir ist der Neuzugang im Klein'schen Weinsortiment, Blanc de Noir, ein Wein gekeltert aus roten Trauben. allerdings ohne Maischestandzeit - also ohne den langen Kontakt des Mostes zu Schalen und Kernen - so dass der Wein eher Weiss bleibt.
