Dieser Selección Especial 2019 hat eine schwarzkirschrote Farbe und eine tiefe Robe. In der Nase ist er komplex, mit Aromen von dunklen Früchten, Anklängen an Zedernholz und Heidekraut, gefolgt von würzigen Aromen wie Pfeffer. Der Auftakt ist elegant und harmonisch, mit Noten von reifen roten Früchten und Gewürzen. Er hat eine fantastische, gut eingebundene Säure, die ihn lang und anhaltend am Gaumen erscheinen lässt. Es handelt sich um einen kräftigen Reserva-Wein mit großem Lagerpotenzial.

The subtle and harmonious 2019 Selección Especial reflects a very complete and good vintage. It has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine. 2019 is a powerful vintage with balance and freshness. The grapes ripened thoroughly and developed a full set of aromas and flavors. It's complex and nuanced, with abundant, fine-grained tannins and a long, dry and tasty finish. Selección applies to the vineyards but also the barrels and everything that contributes to this wine; it's not only a selection of lots, which was the case before the 1994 vintage. 274,992 bottles produced. It was bottled between April and June 2022 after 26 months in barrel.

"Dies ist der bisher beste Aro" (Luis Gutiérrez, Juli 2022)

Beim Bodegas Muga Aro 2019 dominieren fruchtige Empfindungen, die an rote Früchte und sehr reife Waldbeeren (Brombeeren, rote Johannisbeeren, Walderdbeeren) und blumige Noten (Veilchenblüten) erinnern. Würzige Sekundäraromen mit Zimt, Vanille, Nelken und schwarzem Pfeffer. Mit dem sehr gut integrierten Holz, das eine hohe Qualität in seiner Auswahl kennzeichnet. Am Gaumen finden wir einen Wein mit sehr gutem Rückgrat und Säure, frisch und mit einer Präsenz von abgerundeten Tanninen. Der Abgang ist sehr lang. Er hat ein großes Lagerungspotenzial und einen anhaltenden, vollen und eleganten Nachklang.

No 2017 or 2018 were produced of this luxury cuvée made with up to 30% Graciano to complement the Tempranillo from the villages of Labastida, Briñas and Villalba, so from the impressive 2016 I tasted in June 2019, we jumped to the 2019 Aro. The destemmed grapes went through optical sorting and fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in new barrels, where the wine matured for 16 months. It's not a shy wine at 14.6% alcohol, and the Graciano provides extra acidity and vibrancy. It has great balance and a spark of acidity and is a very complete wine, with great aromatics and integrated oak (all new barrels, but better integrated than ever); it has the ripeness of Graciano, which ripens with low yields and only ripens thoroughly in given vintages, and they had to skip warm years like 2011 when some varieties like Graciano and Mazuelo didn't behave well. This is the finest Aro so far. 5,800 bottles were filled in July 2021.

Blueberries, cassis, black pepper, nutmeg and some mahogany here. Salted plums, slate, tobacco leaves and lead-pencil shavings, too. Wow. It’s full-bodied, intense and so well integrated and polished with seamless tannins. Powerful, yet elegant at the same time. 70% tempranillo and 30% graciano. 5,800 bottles only. Try this from 2027.

Moderner Stil! Der Jahrgang 2019 ist ein eleganter Wein ...

... mit großer Farbtiefe, ein sattes Rot mit violetten Reflexen, die auf seine Jugendlichkeit und sein Entwicklungspotenzial hinweisen. In der Nase entfaltet sich ein intensives Aroma von Brombeeren und Erdbeeren. Die rauchigen Nuancen des Ausbaus in feinster französischer Eiche kommen durch und schaffen eine unvergleichliche Harmonie. Am Gaumen ist er kraftvoll, mit den gleichen vorherrschenden Aromen wie in der Nase und einem guten Gleichgewicht zwischen Alkohol und Säure sowie weichen, eleganten Tanninen. Der Abgang ist sehr lang im Mund und hinterlässt ein Gefühl von Fülle.

The 2019 Torre Muga showcases the classical blend of Tempranillo, Mazuelo (Cariñena) and Graciano, all from old and some ancient vines. The grapes are harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, the bunches destemmed and the grapes put through optical sorting to ferment in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic was in new French oak barrels, where the wine aged after racking for some 18 months, during which time it was racked every eight to nine months. It was fined with egg whites. 2019 is a great vintage for Muga, and they produced quality and quantity, which is remarkable. This has a slightly more modern profile and some French oak undertones, more noticeable in a wide glass and subtler in a narrower one. But it has stuffing, freshness and balance to absorb it in the short to medium term. And it's a year of power and finesse, one of the best in recent years. 47,880 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021.

Ein stilvolles Bouquet von schwarzen Früchten, die sich mit Gewürzen, Lebkuchen und Lakritze vermischen. Der weiche, geschmeidige Einstieg am Gaumen führt zu einem Gefühl von sanfter Kraft und luftig-leichtem Volumen, untermauert von kaschmirartigen, seidigen Tanninen, die von einer frischen Säure harmonisch ausgeglichen werden. Im Abgang kommen cremige Vanillenoten mit reifen Früchten zum Vorschein. Dieser Wein verlockt zum zum sofortigen Genuss, aber er wird noch viele Jahre lang gut altern.

The most classical of their wines, the 2015 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche), but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at high altitude. These grapes are always picked last, but the wine has a similar alcohol level as the rest, around 14.5% in a warm year like 2019. The modus operandi is similar to other of the top cuvées—harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemming, optical sorting and fermentation in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in this case is extended to 36 months, and the barrels are only 10% new. This is, year in, year out, my favorite wine from Muga, and in this powerful and ripe year, these late-harvesting vines ripened thoroughly and delivered a full array of aromas and flavors so that the wine has plenty of depth and complexity. It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It's enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. There's no 2012 or 2013 of this. There will be a 2016 and 2019, but no 2017 or 2018. 2020 is still a question mark, they have not yet decided it.

Reserved and polished, this is a Prado Enea with great class and focus. It’s so aromatic,with plum, peach, cherry and cedar character. Salted olives, too. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Elegance with power here. Give it three or four years to open, but already impressive.

Bodegas Muga Reserva 2018 Rioja

Intensiv und komplex, ausgewogen und weich.

Die Rahmendaten zum Bodegas Muga Reserva 2018 Rioja: Handlese, Gärung mit einheimischen Hefen in Holzbottichen. Reifung für 24 Monate in Fässern aus von uns ausgewählter Eiche. Das Holz stammt zu 80% aus französischer Eiche und zu 20% aus amerikanischer Eiche. Vor der Flaschenabfüllung wird der Wein mit frischem Eiweiß geklärt. Anschließend wird er in unserem Flaschenkeller mindestens 12 Monate lang verfeinert, bevor er zum Verkauf freigegeben wird. Und weil Muga in 2018 auf die Produktion des Aro, des Torre Muga und auch des Prado Enea verzichtete, flossen die gewöhnlich für diese Spitzenweine der Bodegas reservierten Trauben in diesem Jahr in den Reserva.

This was the only red that Muga made in 2018, and the wines from the best vineyards went into the blend. In other words, top vineyards were declassified. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are caressing and refined. Plenty of subtle berries, chocolate and walnuts. Tempranillo with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano. January 2021 release. Wild herbs and tangy white-pepper notes on top of the fresh-toned red and black cherries, plums and hints of citrus zest, sweet red berries and minerals. Polished, dusty tannins spread evenly across the medium-bodied palate, with juicy, vivid plums and berries. Nothing showy here, but it’s beautifully balanced and understated, showing real fruit vibrancy and harmony. Drinkable now, but will hold well, too.

The Rioja red 2018 Lanzaga comes from a very wet year with more than 600 liters of rain, but it had a dry October, which helped to fight mildew. They harvested between the 8th of October and 1st of November. It's a blend from their 15 to 20 hectares of organically farmed vines, all head-pruned on slopes rich in clay and limestone, mixing red and white soils, some places with more sandstone, others with more marl, looking for complexity. It fermented in 6,000-liter concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 1,500- and 2,500-liter oak foudres and 225-liter barrels for 14 months. It's floral and expressive, subtle and cold. This could very well be the best value in the portfolio. The wine has gobsmacking subtleness and elegance combined with power, definition and precision. Superb! 24,568 bottles produced. The 2020 Reserva showcases wines from the Haro region and is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented in oak vat with a seven-day maceration. It was aged in barrel for 24 months—80% French and the rest are from central Europe and America. It was bottled at 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.55. This is a very reliable wine, keeping the profile year after year: ripe, juicy with integrated oak, spicy and tasty, with fine tannins with an approachable profile. This is a gentler year that is going to be a success with the general public. Balanced and gentle. They produced 936,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2023.

Ein Wein der sehr gut strukturiert ist. mit ein paar Ecken und Kanten bereitet er aber eine ungemeine Trinkfreude. Aus dem Glas springen viele dunkle Früchte. Johannisbeeren. Kirschen. Schokolade. zarte Rauchnoten. etwas Gewürznelken ein Nasenbild. dass in dieser Preisklasse herausragend ist. Am Gaumen präsentiert sich der Wein mit einem Abbild des Geruches. fantastischer Nachhall. scmeckt nach deutlich mehr. Der Telmo Rodriguez Corriente Rioja besteht zu grössten Teillen aus Tempranillo und wird mit Graciano und Garnacha abgerundet.

Wet-stone minerals, blackberries, red cherries and some roasted spices on the nose, following through to a bone-dry, medium-to-full-bodied palate, with an even distribution of firm and fine-grained tannins. Drink or hold.

I love the 2018 Corriente, the entry-level in Rioja (even if they made me taste it after Las Beatas!). It's from a year with lots of rain (600 liters) that created some fungal challenges and a late harvest that started on the 8th of October and went on until the 1st of November! It was produced with grapes from different altitudes and soils around Lanciego and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats. It matured in barriques and foudres for close to a year. It has a very expressive nose with great purity and definition, marking the character of what the 2018s from the single vineyards are going to be like. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Von Hand geerntet. Nach einer leichten Mazeration des Mostes mit den Schalen in der Presse erfolgt die Gärung in Holzfässern unterschiedlicher Größe und in neuen Fässern aus französischer Eiche mit sehr leicht getoastetem Holz aus der Region Nevers. Nach Abschluss der alkoholischen Gärung verbleibt der Wein 4 Monate lang in den Fässern, wobei er in den ersten Monaten zweimal wöchentlich und im letzten Monat einmal täglich aufgerührt wird, um den feinen Hefesatz in Kontakt mit dem Wein zu halten, ihn vor Sauerstoff zu schützen und ihm ein weicheres Mundgefühl und mehr Komplexität zu verleihen.

Der Jahrgang 2023 von Muga Blanco hat eine schöne strohgelbe Farbe. In der Nase entpuppt er sich als komplexer Wein mit Noten von Zitrusfrüchten wie Zitrone und Zitronenkuchen, blumigen Aromen (weiße Blüten) und Steinobst (Pfirsich) und sogar Anklängen von Vanille. Am Gaumen zeichnet er sich durch einen ausgewogenen Säuregehalt aus. Es handelt sich um einen kräftigen Wein, bei dem sich die Noten von Blumen, Zitrusfrüchten und Steinobst in einem sehr langen Abgang wiederfinden.

Zur 2022er Ausgabe schrieb Luis Gutiérrez für RPWA: "Sehr frisch mit Aromen von Zitronenabrieb, weißer Grapefruit, zerstoßenen Muscheln und Schiefer. Etwas Biskuit und gesalzene gelbe Pflaumen. Mittelkräftig mit schöner Mineralität und Frische. Lebendiger Abgang." Score: 90+. Und James Suckling schrieb: "Sehr schöne Aromen von Geißblatt, Apfel und Birne mit einem Hauch von Stein. Mittlerer Körper. Knackig und köstlich." 92 Punkte.

Der EL Anden de la Estacion 2021 Muga Family Rioja hat eine mittlekräftige rubinrote Farbe. In der Nase treten die Noten von roten Beerenfrüchten in den Vordergrund, mit gut eingebundenen, dezent in Erscheinung tretenden Röstaromen. Am Gaumen ist er leicht und sehr klar definiert, mit seidigen Tanninen, wobei er dank der perfekt ausgewogenen Säure frisch und elegant bleibt.

The red 2021 El Andén de la Estación follows the 2019, as they didn't produce a 2020. It's a red with a very commercial profile: approachable, juicy, fruit driven and with very integrated oak. It's a blend of Tempranillo and 30% Garnacha, with 15% alcohol (the effect of Garnacha). It is showy, ripe, a bit heady and hedonistic, but it keeps the balance with good freshness. The wine has quite a lot of Garnacha character—grapey, chewy, velvety and easy to drink. They do not use any new barrels. The wine is aged for some 14 months, and the oak is very integrated and folded into the wine. The bottle has the Crianza back label. This will be ideal for the by-the-glass market. They produced close to 200,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2023.

Champagne Louise Brison Rose de la Cote Bar Brut Nature 2015

100% Cote de Bar, 100 % Pinot Noir, 100% Barrique-Ausbau

Die Weinberge von Champagne Louise Brison liegen auf rund 320 Metern Seehöhe und sind geprägt von Kimmeridge-Kalk und Mergel mit einer Auflage aus Tonerde – ähnlich wie im benachbarten Chablis. Der Grundwein wurde im Saignée-Verfahren gewonnen und im Barrique vergoren, die Assemblage im Edelstahl zusammengeführt und im Juni 2016 auf die Flasche gezogen. Degorgiert wurde mit null Gramm Dosage im November 2022.

Der Champagner Louise Brison Rose de la Cote Bar Brut Nature 2015 zeigt eine regelmäßige, anhaltende Perlage bei einer intensiven rosa Farbe. In der Nase ausdrucksstark und offen, mit Aromen von roten Früchten wie Kirschen und Johannisbeeren. Untermalt von subtilen Holznoten. Am Gaumen wissen Knackigkeit und Struktur ebenso zu überzeugen wie eine gute Länge. Ein großzügiger und fruchtiger Rosé.

Farbe: intensives Erdbeerrot mit feiner Perlage. Nase: Der 2015er Rosé de la Côte des Bar ist ein farb- und aromenintensiver Champagner mit Noten von Grapefruits, Roten Johannisbeeren, Preiselbeeren und Granatpafel. Hinzu kommen Berberitzen, etwas Ingwer, Kalk und Blutorangenzesten. Abgerundet wird das Ganze durch einem Hauch von Patisserie. Und so treffen die Aromen von Agrumen und roten Beeren auf eine gute Portion Gerbstoff, eine feine Perlage und eine Säure mit viel Zug. Der Kimmerdige-Kalk sorgt für viel Spannung und Energie sowie für einen prägnanten Salzgehalt im Finale, der wiederum für einen hohen Trinkfluss verantwortlich ist. Der Wein besitzt viel Kraft, Durchsetzungsvermögen und verfügt auch über eine angenehme Eleganz.

Der Vazart Coquart & fils Champagne Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Chouilly Grand Cru stammt aus einem Mosaik von Mikro-Terroirs, alle in einem 11 ha umfassenden Grand-Cru-Weingarten der Gemeinde Chouilly, südöstlich vom Champagne-Epizentrum Èpernay in der Côte des Blancs gelegen. Das Durchschnittsalter der Chardonnay-Reben beträgt 43 Jahre. Mit der Lese 2020 wurde die Umstellung des Weingutes auf einen nachhaltigen und ökologischen Weinbau vollzogen. Abgefüllt im Mai 2021 besteht dieses Cuvée des Vazart Coquart & fils Champagne Brut Réserve Blanc de Blancs Chouilly Grand Cru aus 65% der 2017er Lese, je 5% der 2016er und 2015er sowie sowie 25 % aus einer Réserve perpétuelle, die 1982 begonnen wurde und jedes Jahr mit 40% aus den ersten Säften der aktuellen Lese erneuert wird.

The 2019 Pintas Vintage Port is a field blend from more than 40 different grapes from very old vines (around 90 years). It comes in with 108 grams of residual sugar and was bottled in May 2021 after 19 months in old chestnut casks. Wine & Soul has gradually made itself into a top Port producer, easily competing with the old and big names. This is another great example, a fine companion to some brilliant ones in the last few vintages. Which is the best? This has a pretty good chance of claiming that prize, but let's come back around 2035 for a better view. In the meanwhile, it looks like one of the finest 2019s I have seen. Intensely powerful, this is a very different style, happily, than the producer's table wines.

With table wines, they avoid rusticity and make polished wines. That's not to say this is too astringent, but this Port lets it all hang out, with some old-school power and intensity. The beautiful fruit is pretty fine too, and it smells great. To be sure, it is a little subdued by the pure power today. A few days later, the lovely fruit asserts itself more. A few more days (six days from the first pour), it had hardly budged again. If someone told me that it had just been opened an hour earlier, that would've been believable. It then adds fine mid-palate finesse, never seeming ponderous but always seeming deep. This is going to need at least a decade of cellaring. That just gets you to approachability, as I don't think it will be close to ready at that point. This is all about potential, but it is so brilliant on so many levels that it makes me want to lean up on it right now. To be sure, there's a lot left to prove.
