21 Jan, 2022 – This is incredibly complex, with all the cabernet descriptors, from mint and lead pencil to blackberry, blackcurrant and menthol. It changes all the time in the glass, just as in the nose. Yet, it remains cool and classy. Full-bodied with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, carrying on and on and on. Well-framed and compact wine. Never-ending procession of currant, berry and black cherry fruit, together with licorice, earth and just a hint of black truffle. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Give this until 2028 to show its true greatness.

The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild is based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and it hit a relatively normal alcohol level of 13.5%, which is higher than the 2009 and shows the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vintage. It shows the new, modern style of Bordeaux in its purity, elegance, and finesse while still being an incredibly concentrated Pauillac, and where some vintages of Mouton can just about jump out of the glass, this is a more seamless, streamlined, elegant beauty that builds with time in the glass and is just about impossible to fault. Gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor, licorice, damp earth, and graphite, as well as some espresso nuances, emerge on the nose, and it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is pure haute couture in Bordeaux that unquestionably offers pleasure today (again, just about all modern Bordeaux from a great vintage offer pleasure in their youth) but will require a solid decade to hit maturity, and it should evolve for 20, 30, 40 years or more. This is not an unformed beast of wine that demands bottle age, and I suspect it will have a broad, forgiving drink window that consumers will love.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild has come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel. Today, it is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Powerful and statuesque in its beauty, Mouton is remarkable in every way. Layers of dark-toned fruit confer seriousness and intensity that builds with time. All of the finesse I saw in barrel is still present. Since then, the 2019 has gained flesh and vibrancy. Magnificent!

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild has a magnificent bouquet that gradually unfolds in the glass to reveal blackberry, iodine, touches of crushed violet and then, with time, that gorgeous mintiness, just like you get in the 1945 (not that this is the 1945). The palate is beautifully balanced with a lattice of fine, succulent tannins, pure black fruit laced with graphite, blood orange, a touch of black pepper and a hint of pitted black olives on the finish. Very persistent in the mouth, this is a brilliant Mouton-Rothschild that will blossom with bottle age.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild comes off the back of a succession of superlative wines that you would have to go back to the late Forties to see again. Deep in colour. it has a very composed and refined bouquet: very pure blackberry intermingling with bilberry and graphite. touches of Earl Grey and crushed stone emerging after several minutes in the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced with finely-chiseled tannins. a little spicier than the previous vintage from barrel last year. gently building and fanning out towards the poised finish. This is a sophisticated. classic Mouton-Rothschild that will require a little more cellaring than some recent vintages. but will surely be worth the wait.

Trotz einer relativ zurückhaltenden Aromatik offenbart der Wein am Gaumen einen makellosen, vollmundigen und verführerisch offenen Stil mit Anklängen von Cassis, Schokolade und Bleistiftspänen. Die herausragende Tanninqualität, eine konzentrierte Mitte, perfekte Balance und ein langer Abgang machen ihn zu einem klassischen Latour, der einige Jahre Lagerung verlangt und sich voraussichtlich über drei Jahrzehnte gut entwickeln wird.

One of the best Batailleys, maybe the best, in recent years, and a strong follow-up to their splendid 2018. Highly recommended and still one of the best values in Pauillac.

Maybe just a little abrupt on the finish at the moment, but that will fill out in time.

The 2019 Echo De Lynch-Bages is the second wine of Château Lynch-Bages and it's beautifully done, with a more floral, perfumed, pretty style compared to the Grand Vin, yet it still brings plenty of structure. Red and black currants, sappy flowers, tobacco leaf, and gravelly earth all define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully balanced and already accessible, yet will nevertheless benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age.

Mittelkräftig, weich, elegant, frisch und kreidig mit Nuancen von Kreide, Tabakblatt, Waldboden und roten sowie schwarzen Johannisbeeren. Der Wein ist weich und cremig mit einer schönen Süße am elegant gestalteten Gaumen, es gibt viel Charme sowie Frische. Der Wein besteht aus 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot und 2% Cabernet Franc. Interessant ist, dass Batailley als erster bedeutender Wein des Jahrgangs 2021 veröffentlicht wurde und zum gleichen Preis wie der Jahrgang 2020 angeboten wurde. Die Zeit wird zeigen, ob dies eine gute Strategie war oder nicht. Trinkreif von 2026 bis 2049.

NEAL MARTIN
Der 2021er Batailley genießt förmlich ein kühleres, herausforderndes Jahrgangsprofil wie dieses. Er hat ein gut definiertes, sauberes, frisches, klassisch gestaltetes Bouquet mit einem von Bleistiftspänen durchzogenen schwarzen Fruchtaroma, das nur aus Pauillac stammen kann. Der Gaumen ist mittelgewichtig mit sanftem Griff, sehr harmonisch mit weißen Pfeffer- und Salbei-Noten, die sich sanft im Mund aufbauen und in einem zusammenhängenden, langen, von Graphit geprägten Abgang gipfeln. Dies ist ein Batailley, der sich in seiner eigenen Haut wohlfühlt. Ich vermute, dass er 25-30 Jahre Trinkvergnügen bieten wird.

Der 2021er Batailley ist ein wahres Kraftpaket. Dennoch bietet er eine feine Balance. Breite Tannine umhüllen einen Kern aus dunkelfarbenen Früchten, Lakritze, Gewürzen, schwarzen Oliven, Lavendel und Salbei. Batailley ist einer der seltenen 2021er Weine, der Zeit braucht, um sich zu entwickeln. Seine Intensität, Breite und allgemeine Persistenz sind beeindruckend. Es gibt hier eine echte texturale Resonanz, ganz zu schweigen von der Fülle an Charakter.

Is the 2019 Château Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.

18 Jan, 2022 – Amazing aromas of crushed stones and wet soil with fresh mushrooms, then going on to violets and other flowers. Dark fruit, too. Full-bodied, yet agile and fine, with a linear flow of tannins that run through the center of palate. The finesse of the tannins is exceptional, like raw silk and changing all the time. Cool and energetic, yet reserved. Zen-like. 37% of the production and 90% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. So well balanced that you can drink it now, but this is one to leave for a decade and more. Ethereal.

The 2019 Château Margaux possesses off the charts richness to go along with plush contours and mind-blowing balance. All the elements are so wonderfully woven together. It's as if all the Château Margaux signatures are dialed up to eleven, but without losing any of the classic Margaux character. The purity of the red-toned fruit is just breathtaking. The Merlot was picked early, but then rain during harvest delayed the ripening of the Cabernets, which turned out to be a huge advantage.

The 2019 Château Margaux, bottled in July 2021, is absolutely divine on the nose. It unfurls to reveal exquisitely defined black fruit infused with graphite, Japanese nori and just a hint of potpourri and crushed stone. This is supremely well focused, refined and correct, so much so that you would think it comes from a cooler growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, filigreed tannins that envelop the senses. Flavors of blackberry and bilberry, tinged with sea salt and black pepper, merge into a slightly more sensual finish that is still quintessentially Margaux. I used the word "effortless" in my note from barrel, and that rings true in bottle, though maybe there is now even more persistence. Quite stunning.

Blackberry and chocolate in the finish too. 27% of the crop and a blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot, the rest petit verdot and cabernet franc. Delicious already, but give it at least six years of bottle age. Better after 2027.

Given that Margaux's second wine contains plenty of fruit that made it into the grand vin just a decade or two ago, great things are to be expected from this bottling. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it.

The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit on the entry, hints of licorice infusing the black fruit, fine salinity, and a well-defined, structured, graphite-tinged finish. It will still require four to five years in bottle but should drink well for 12 to 15 years.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

Very persistent and almost uncharacteristically grippy on the finish, this is a gifted Lafite-Rothschild that will last 50+ years. It will certainly surpass the 2018 with continued bottle age.

The 2019 Le Petit Mouton De Mouton Rothschild is one heck of a second wine and has a rare level of depth and density. A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot, it reveals a dense ruby/purple hue to go with textbook Pauillac notes of cedar pencil, smoke tobacco, spice box, blackcurrants, and graphite. Deep, rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully balanced, it's probably better than many vintages of the Grand Vin. I absolutely love its purity of fruit, balance, and structure. It needs a healthy decant if drinking any time soon and will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age, but it will have over two decades of longevity. Just don't tell yourself it's a second wine and you'll think you're drinking the Grand Vin.

The 2019 Le Petit Mouton is notably serious this year, offering up a rich bouquet of minty berries, cherries, licorice and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a generous core of fruit, youthfully chewy tannins and a long, sapid finish, it will reward a bit of bottle age.

The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2028, but an absolute joy to taste now.

The 2019 Pontet-Canet was so effusive and generous en primeur. Today, though, it is quite reticent. That won't be an issue for those who can be patient, but patience indeed will be the key here. Dark red fleshed fruit, tobacco, cedar, spice, kirsch, mint and blood orange gradually open with a bit of coaxing. Imposing tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty, but it needs time.

Matured in 50% new oak and 35% concrete amphora, this is endowed with an intense, enveloping bouquet of opulent blackberry and boysenberry fruit laced with crushed violet and light fig aromas, becoming more floral with aeration and revealing crushed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with layered black fruit, cracked black pepper, hints of pencil lead and a splash of soy. This is one of the most powerful Pauillac wines that I encountered this vintage, very juicy and with plenty of rondeur on the very spicy finish. This should give three decades of drinking pleasure.

Der Cabernet Franc wurde deklassiert. 30% der Produktion ergab Grand Vin. Sattes Purpur-Granat, dicht in der Mitte, lila Schimmer aussen. Würziges Bouquet, tintige Anflüge und deutlich florale Noten, nicht so reserviert wie der Les Forts de Latour, aber auch nicht unbedingt kommunikativ. Im Gaumen zeigt er dann fraglos Grösse, schwarzer Pfeffer, Pumpernickelbrot, Heidelbeeren und Cassis, die Adstringenz ist verlangend, er zeigt aber auch eine schier feminine Noblesse, nachhaltig, mit mittlerem Druck. Wenn man Latour auf dem Etikett liest und den Jahrgang 2015 vor sich hat, dann erfüllt er vielleicht (momentan) nicht ganz die Erwartungen. Man hat hier aber auch das positive Gefühl, dass er in seiner Evolution noch rückständig ist und sicherlich noch zulegen kann/könnte. 19/20 2026 – 2060

Exquisit parfümiert, mit duftenden Noten von zerdrückten schwarzen Kirschen, Himbeermarmelade, Cassis und schwarzen Pflaumen. Nuancen von Rosen, dunkler Schokolade, Garrigue, Menthol und Sandelholz ergänzen das faszinierende Bouquet. Am Gaumen präsentiert sich der Wein mittelkräftig mit straffen, muskulösen Fruchtnoten, geschmeidigen Tanninen und einer fesselnden Frische, gefolgt von verlockenden Erde- und Mineraliennoten. Dieser Jahrgang wird als intellektuell und sinnlich beschrieben, was an den Film "Working Girl" erinnert und eine sinnliche Eleganz demonstriert.

Aromen von Eisen, Austernschale, Rost und Steinen mit Blaubeeren und Brombeeren. Der Wein ist vollmundig, poliert und raffiniert, mit fruchtigen und salzigen Geschmacksnuancen. Er zeichnet sich durch Struktur, Fokus und Raffinesse aus, mit einer schönen Länge und einem hohen Anteil an Cabernet Sauvignon, der dem Wein Frische verleiht. Suckling empfiehlt, den Wein ab 2022 zu genießen.
