The 2020 Virginie de Valandraud has a well-defined and quite complex bouquet of blackberry, briar, mint and light cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with dark chocolate and mint on the entry and grainy in texture, displaying a fine bead of acidity, and leading to an almost Left Bank–inspired finish that feels long and tender. Very fine.

A worthy follow up to the excellent 2019, the 2020 La Gaffelière bursts with aromas of plums, sweet berries, licorice, mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, with lively acids and vibrant fruit flavors, it's built around powdery, fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Franc represents fully 40% of the blend. As I wrote last year, this estate, in many respects Saint-Émilion's sleeping giant, is awakening.

It doesn't bring the depth and richness of the top wines in the vintage, but it certainly shines for its complexity and balance.

Made from 100% Merlot that spent 14 months in 60% new French oak, it has beautiful integration of its fruit, tannins, and acidity, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The palate is marked by succulent tannins that frame the precocious black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, and blessed with a disarming satiny texture and impressive precision toward the finish. Certainly one of the most hedonistic offerings in 2020, though it just about manages to pull it off. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

It has an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.5. It is aging in French oak barrels, 25% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with exuberant notes of baked red and black plums, blackberry preserves and mulberries, plus touches of hoisin, licorice and lilacs. The medium-bodied palate delivers a great intensity of black fruits with an approachable, soft texture and a racy line, finishing refreshing.
