Ridge Lytton Springs 2017 Zinfandel

94 Sucklingpunkte für denJames Suckling im Dezember 2019

This blend of 74% zinfandel, 15% petite sirah, 9% carignane and 2% mataro has that signature Ridge freshness and definition with such reliable focus on fruit. Aromas of dried plums, dry roasted spices, red flowers and leaves lead to a palate that has such succulent, rich red berries and plums. So lively and attractive. Drink or hold.

A cold winter delayed bud-break. Late spring rain disrupted bloom. reducing yields by a quarter. Summer was warm at times. but mostly foggy and cool. This slowed ripening which produced greater flavor and firmer acidity. We picked nine parcels in early September. and barrel fermented each separately. The most elegant. that showed the finest fruit. were selected for this superb chardonnay. It can be enjoyed now.

94 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Cullen Diana Madeline 2015 Margaret RiverZum Jahrgang 2015 (2016 wurde nicht bewertet) notierte Joe Czerwinski im Dezember 2017:

Despite exhibiting a bit of youthful austerity, the 2015 Diana Madeline should mature into an exemplary representation of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon (there's 11% Merlot, 1% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc in the blend). It's classic Bordeaux in style, meaning it's medium-bodied and streamlined and framed by firm but ripe tannins. Cassis fruit forms the core, although hints of cedar oak, pressed flowers and dried herbs add considerable nuance, picking up notes of chocolate on the taut, lingering finish. It's an early candidate for Cabernet Sauvignon of the vintage in Margaret River.

Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The 2016 Monte Bello is stunning. bursting from the glass with aromas of crushed currants. plums. charcoal. sweet spices. black truffle and rich soil. On the palate. it's full-bodied. immensely deep and very concentrated. with an ample core of dark fruit that almost entirely conceals its rich chassis of tannin. The finish is long. tensile and chalky. Eric Baugher observes that 2016 was a drought year but that the vines were less stressed than in 2015. thanks to Spring precipitation. and it wasn't necessary to irrigate. Summer saw wild temperature swings. and though it was below average in summation. some days were very warm. The final Monte Bello blend contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12% Merlot. 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc. which represents a slight change from when I tasted it a year ago. though its profile remains very much the same. The 2016 checks in at 13.8% alcohol and pH 3.49. Cellar it for a decade and follow it for another three.

One of the highlights in this tasting. the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics. bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly. the 2016 is very primary today. with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. Winemaker Tasting Notes:
Opaque purple-ruby color. Ripe blackberry fruit. barrel spice. anise. violets. and crushed limestone. Opulent mountain fruit entry. firm acid. and fine-grain. age-worthy tannins. Powerful complexity and tremendous length to the finish.

Late winter rains brought some relief from another year of drought. Monte Bello’s fractured limestone held onto this moisture for the vines to draw on through a mild summer. Unusually cold nights slowed ripening and developed firm acidity. while gentle extraction during fermentation kept tannins in balance. Through careful blind-tasting twentythree lots were assembled and spent eighteen months in barrel. This superb vintage will age beautifully over the next thirty years.

Cullen Diana Madeline 2019 Margaret River

The palate is stunning and has a brand of elegance with power that is found in only the greatest wines. 93 Punkte James Suckling für den Othello Napa Valley red 2014 Dominus EstateDen 2014er Othello Napa Valley von Dominus beschreibt James Suckling wie folgt:

A rich and fruity red with currant and black tea aromas. Full body. firm and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows tension and structure. Second wine of Dominus. Drink or hold.

"2014 is a very good vintage for the valley. A summer without severe heat waves allowed us to produce wines with good balance."

Climatic conditions
2014 was characterized by a very dry early winter with heavy rains in February and continued rainfall in March and April (February 11.7 inches | March: 4 inches | April: 2 inches).

Average temperatures were higher than historical averages with minor heat spikes in June (38°C) and in July (39°C). No heat spikes were recorded in August or September.

Tasting notes
Othello 2014 is a refreshing and straightforward wine expressing its bountiful fruit with bright aromas of wild strawberries and soft tannins. Pleasant to drink in its youth. Othello
will nonetheless improve with a few years of cellaring.

Louis M. Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

The 2014s, where the production of Napanook was only 2,200 cases and Dominus slightly more than the 2015 at 4,000 cases, was another early harvest, although somewhat later than 2015. The 2014 Napanook is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 9% Petit Verdot, showing notes of loamy earth, Christmas fruitcake, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit and underbrush in a supple, fragrant and lush heady style. It is another successful wine that should drink beautifully young and age nicely for up to 20 years.

Christian Moueix’s Dominus Estate continues to be one of California’s leaders in turning out gorgeously elegant, complex and long-lived wines. A magnum of 1991 from my cellar tasted several weeks before I left for California was pure perfection and evidence that at 25 years old, before he had built his stunning winery, great quality was coming from this iconic vineyard. The 2015s are certainly going to be one of his all-time great vintages, rivaling 2013, 2012, 2007, 2002, 2001 and his earliest classics, such as 1994 and 1991. Production in 2015 was about 3,000 cases of Napanook and 3,800 cases of Dominus.

The 2014 Napanook is, once again, a very serious wine. Dark, powerful and brooding, the 2014 possesses remarkable intensity packed into its mid-weight frame. Smoke, scorched earth, tobacco, graphite, savory herbs and menthol add to an impression of gravitas. The 2014 doesn't quite have the depth or power of the 2013, but it leans in that direction. I would give it a few years in bottle to settle down. This is an impressive showing.
