The 2017 Petite Syrah Lytton Estate is another superb wine from Ridge's Lytton ranch. Inky dark fruit and expressive savory notes infuse this bombastic. heady Petite with tremendous nuance and surprising freshness. The 2017 is very young at this stage. but it clearly has the structure to age. My impression is that it will be even better once some of the baby fat melts away. Weinbeschreibung:

72% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12% Merlot. 10% Petit Verdot. 6% Cabernet Franc

96-98+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Ridge Monte Bello 2016 Santa Cruz MountainsWilliam Kelley am 31. Mai 2018: 96-98+ Punkte

The 2016 Monte Bello is stunning. bursting from the glass with aromas of crushed currants. plums. charcoal. sweet spices. black truffle and rich soil. On the palate. it's full-bodied. immensely deep and very concentrated. with an ample core of dark fruit that almost entirely conceals its rich chassis of tannin. The finish is long. tensile and chalky. Eric Baugher observes that 2016 was a drought year but that the vines were less stressed than in 2015. thanks to Spring precipitation. and it wasn't necessary to irrigate. Summer saw wild temperature swings. and though it was below average in summation. some days were very warm. The final Monte Bello blend contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12% Merlot. 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc. which represents a slight change from when I tasted it a year ago. though its profile remains very much the same. The 2016 checks in at 13.8% alcohol and pH 3.49. Cellar it for a decade and follow it for another three.

One of the highlights in this tasting. the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics. bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly. the 2016 is very primary today. with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that. though. the 2016 pulses with energy and simply exceptional balance. Don't miss it!

Bottled in March of 2018 and a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12% Merlot. 10% Petit Verdot. and the balance Cabernet Franc. the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello offers a more streamlined. elegant. and ultra-classic style compared to the 2014 and 2015. which are slightly bigger. richer wines. Boasting a deep purple color and beautiful purity in its crème de cassis. blueberry. white flowers. and vanilla bean. it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness. silky tannins. and perfect balance. It doesn’t have the sheer depth of fruit of some of the blockbuster years. yet makes up for it with its incredible purity. poise. and balance. Winemaker Tasting Notes:
Opaque purple-ruby color. Ripe blackberry fruit. barrel spice. anise. violets. and crushed limestone. Opulent mountain fruit entry. firm acid. and fine-grain. age-worthy tannins. Powerful complexity and tremendous length to the finish.

Late winter rains brought some relief from another year of drought. Monte Bello’s fractured limestone held onto this moisture for the vines to draw on through a mild summer. Unusually cold nights slowed ripening and developed firm acidity. while gentle extraction during fermentation kept tannins in balance. Through careful blind-tasting twentythree lots were assembled and spent eighteen months in barrel. This superb vintage will age beautifully over the next thirty years.

It is another successful wine that should drink beautifully young and age nicely for up to 20 years.

Christian Moueix’s Dominus Estate continues to be one of California’s leaders in turning out gorgeously elegant. complex and long-lived wines. A magnum of 1991 from my cellar tasted several weeks before I left for California was pure perfection and evidence that at 25 years old. before he had built his stunning winery. great quality was coming from this iconic vineyard. The 2015s are certainly going to be one of his all-time great vintages. rivaling 2013. 2012. 2007. 2002. 2001 and his earliest classics. such as 1994 and 1991. The 2014 Napanook is, once again, a very serious wine. Dark, powerful and brooding, the 2014 possesses remarkable intensity packed into its mid-weight frame. Smoke, scorched earth, tobacco, graphite, savory herbs and menthol add to an impression of gravitas. The 2014 doesn't quite have the depth or power of the 2013, but it leans in that direction. I would give it a few years in bottle to settle down. This is an impressive showing.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 D’Armailhac (a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) hits the ground running with wonderfully open-knit, flamboyant scents of Morello cherries, black raspberries, blackcurrant jelly and rose oil, leading to an undercurrent of cinnamon toast, aniseed and mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energy and expressiveness, delivering red and black berry layers with loads of spicy sparks, framed by plush tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

The 2018 d'Armailhac is bright, fresh and so inviting, just as it was en primeur. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, spice, tobacco and anise add lovely aromatic complexity. All of the intensity of the year comes through nicely and yet the personality of Armailhac is evident also. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years, to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. There is a bit more breadth and richness that is the result of yields that were just 32 hectoliters per hectare as opposed to the more typical 42 or so. It was a vintage marked by heat stress, small berries and lower juice to skin ratio, as well as some parcels affected by mildew.

Just as magnificent from bottle as it was in barrel, the 2013 Napanook is dense, powerful and brooding, with searing intensity and extraordinary balance. Lavender, plums, violets, licorice and smoke are some of the signatures, but the 2013 exudes finesse, power and intensity. Bracing and searing, the 2013 is going to require quite a bit of patience. If anything, this is an insane level of quality for the second selection. The 2013 could turn out to be a thirty-year wine. It is every bit that magnificent, especially if given some aeration.

93 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Napanook 2013 Napa Valley Dominus EstateRobert Parker jr. im Oktober 2015:

There are 2,000 cases of the 2013 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This wine reflects the much higher quality that’s emerging with the second wine of Dominus, which has really become almost its own entity. Loads of loamy soil notes, grilled herbs, meat, blackcurrants, sweet kirsch and licorice are all present in this medium to full-bodied, lush, sexy wine, even in 2013. It is interesting how much more evolved and forward the 2013 Napanook is compared to the 2013 Dominus. This wine can be drunk over the next 12-15 years. In any event, both merit considerable attention from subscribers.

Aromas of currants and fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and basil, follow through to a full body with layers of ripe tannins and a chewy finish. This is just a baby now and needs three or four years to come around. Try after 2024.

97+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Le Macchiole Paleo 2017 Toscana Cabernet FrancMonica Larner über den Paleo Rosso 2017 von Le Macchiole im Oktober 2020:

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

96 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Le Macchiole Paleo 2017 Toscana Cabernet FrancAntonio Galloni zum Paleo 2017 im Januar 2021:

The 2017 Paleo Rosso is superb. It is also the wine in this range that seems to have handled the rigors of 2017 best. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan Coast. The aromatics alone are so alluring. Sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar give Paleo its aromatic lift. Some varietal character has been baked out because of the heat of the year. In exchange, readers will find a Paleo Rosso that will drink well with just a year or two in bottle. The 2017 was fermented in cement and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 90% new with light toast.
