Domaine de la Janasse

In 1967, Aimé Sabon came back from his military service. He took over his father’s vines, who used to take his grapes to the wine cooperative. In 1973, Aimé built his own cellar. Domaine de la Janasse was born and named after the family farm that was in Courthézon, in the locality of “La Janasse”. Aimé was ambitious. He knew he had fabulous soil and he wanted to expand the estate by acquiring new plots. From 1
5 hectares at the very beginning, La Janasse has now reached more than 90 hectares.

From father to children

In 1991, after a technical diploma in viticulture and oenology in Beaune, and another one in marketing in Mâcon, Christophe Sabon –Aimé’s eldest son– came back to La Janasse where he
was given the keys to the cellar. From then different cuvees were developed, new markets conquered. In 2001, Isabelle –Aimé’s daughter– graduated as an oenologist from the University of Toulouse,
and joined the team. With Hélène, Aimé’s wife, the family was reunited again in La Janasse.

Much more powerful and closed, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes comes more from the La Crau and La Janasse lieux-dits and is the usual blend of mostly Grenache with a touch of Syrah. Blackberries, graphite, scorched earth, pepper, and sappy garrigue all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, has beautiful concentration, polished tannins, and a great finish. Nothing is out of place, and this perfectly balanced, authoritative, powerful, and incredibly impressive 2020 will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars.

Not as rich or concentrated as I was expecting, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes still delivers ample layers of dark fruit, hints of cola, mint and spice elements. It's full-bodied, silky and long, but it looks to fall short of the quality heights reached by some other recent vintages.

All Grenache, with about 20% to 30% whole bunches, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin is slightly herbal and stemmy on the nose, but those elements are balanced by wonderful black cherry and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied, concentrated yet silky, with a long, briny finish, this is another strong 2020 from the Sabon family.

I was blown away by the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chaupin, a 100% Grenache release that comes almost exclusively from the Chaupin lieu-dit in the northern part of the appellation. It's never as inky-hued or powerful as the Vieilles Vignes but always screams Grenache with its sexy, ripe, seamless, and remarkably elegant style. The 2020 offers a translucent ruby/purple hue as well as incredible aromatics of blackberries, black raspberries, peppery garrigue, herbes de Provence, and flowers, and it opens up nicely with time in the glass. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. I finished my note with "a Grenache lover's dream." This is up with the finest vintages produced and will evolve for 15+ years.

The classic 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this team is a winner, offering a medium to full-bodied, finesse-driven style as well as terrific aromatics of darker berries, raspberries, garrigue, and flowers, with a kiss of background peppery spice. It's balanced, medium to full-bodied, has ripe, soft tannins, and is loaded with character. Drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years.

A terrific wine that harkens back to the 2016, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus intriguing notes of garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and silky, it finishes long, with a wash of softly dusty tannins.

There was only one 32-hectoliter foudre (now bottled) of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues, an all-Grenache cuvée vinified with 50% whole clusters. It's floral and herbal on the nose, with bold flavors of blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it boasts supple tannins balanced by hints of brine and fresh acids. It's easily the equal of many Châteauneufs and the price has crept up to reflect that.

An interesting project that focuses on Merlot, the 2017 IGP Principaute d'Orange Terre de Bussiere is 60% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. All but the Grenache mature in older barrels, while the Grenache stays in tank prior to blending and bottling. It's a bit leafy, but within acceptable bounds, delivering ripe black cherries and even a hint of cassis. Full-bodied and round in the mouth, it finishes with a flurry of softly dusty tannins and a hint of dark chocolate.

Slightly darker hued, the 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Villages Terre D’Argile has more black raspberry and darker cherry notes as well as lots of spicy herbs, flowers, and garrigue-like nuances. Wonderfully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a kiss of background oak, this rock star Côtes Du Rhône should be purchased by the case.

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan. Grenache. Mourvèdre and Syrah. It's a full-bodied. silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty. earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.

Herkunft:
Auf verschiedenen Terroirs, meist sandig, östlich von Courthézon.

Anbau:
Die Reben werden ohne Pestizide oder Insektizide angebaut und der Dünger ist natürlich. Das Land wird ohne Unkrautvernichtungsmittel bearbeitet, um die Belüftung und Flexibilität des Bodens zu erhalten. Massenselektion aus dem berühmten Terroir von Condrieux.

Ausbau:
Morgendliche Handlese in Kisten mit Sortierung im Weinberg. Pneumatisches Pressen, dann Weinbereitung in Fässern.

Reifung:
Auf Sedimenten, 60 % in Tanks und 40 % in Fässern (einschließlich 1/4 neues Holz) unter Aufrühren, für 6 Monate.

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc. Clairette. Grenache Blanc. Roussanne and Viognier. all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel. with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean. zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Christophe wore his customary. irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match. and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest." he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power. finesse and acidity." Interestingly. the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines. which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)

Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy. mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.
