Domaine de la Janasse
Domaine de la Janasse

In 1967, Aimé Sabon came back from his military service. He took over his father’s vines, who used to take his grapes to the wine cooperative. In 1973, Aimé built his own cellar. Domaine de la Janasse was born and named after the family farm that was in Courthézon, in the locality of “La Janasse”. Aimé was ambitious. He knew he had fabulous soil and he wanted to expand the estate by acquiring new plots. From 1
5 hectares at the very beginning, La Janasse has now reached more than 90 hectares.

From father to children

In 1991, after a technical diploma in viticulture and oenology in Beaune, and another one in marketing in Mâcon, Christophe Sabon –Aimé’s eldest son– came back to La Janasse where he
was given the keys to the cellar. From then different cuvees were developed, new markets conquered. In 2001, Isabelle –Aimé’s daughter– graduated as an oenologist from the University of Toulouse,
and joined the team. With Hélène, Aimé’s wife, the family was reunited again in La Janasse.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Village Terre d'Argile 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. It's a full-bodied, silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty, earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Village Terre d'Argile 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 29. August 2018:

Some poached strawberries, raspberries, dark fruit, garrigue herbs and iodine-like savoriness. The super-pure acidity and tannins are intertwined around ripe, fleshy blackberries. Coal smoke through the minerally finish. Drink or hold.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape XXL 2016

100 Parker Punkte | Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape XXL 2016Joe Czerwinski am 31.08.2018:

Only the second vintage of this cuvée ever to be produced (the other is 2007), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape XXL is about 75% Grenache, with the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It incorporates "a lot" of whole clusters and matured in demi-muid. It was bottled in May but will likely only be released in November, says Christophe Sabon. Classy aromas of crushed stone, pencil shavings and baking spices start it off on a terrific note, while ripe raspberries and stone fruit unfold on the full-bodied palate. Contrary to the implications of its name, this wine boasts incredible finesse, elegance and length and is in fact more impressive for those qualities than its overall size, power and richness. It will certainly open a few eyes.

100 Punkte bei Jeb Dunnuck für den JAnasse XXL Chateauneuf du Pape 2016
The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape XXL has only been made previously in the 2007 vintage, and there are around 400 cases of this beauty in 2016. Coming from old vines near Beaucastel, La Crau, and Saumade, which are all rolled stone terroirs, it’s mostly Grenache (there’s 10% Mourvèdre) brought up primarily in demi-muids. This incredible wine is deep ruby/purple-colored with a massive nose of black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, incense, and pepper. Deep, hugely concentrated, pure, fine and yet still elegant, it's a magical, heavenly wine that's going to keep for 3-4 decades. While the style at Janasse has shifted to one of slightly more freshness and elegance since 2007, this is much more in the style of the old days and is guaranteed to make your blood pressure jump about 10 points or more!

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone blanc 2017Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Viognier, all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel, with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean, zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Christophe wore his customary, irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match, and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest," he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power, finesse and acidity." Interestingly, the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines, which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

Time will tell if this wine equals the stellar 2015; it's certainly very close in quality. The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a blend of approximately 75% Grenache, 12% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah and the rest other permitted varieties. Tarry and deep on the nose, it delivers waves of blackberries and black cherries on the palate, framing those flavors with plenty of richness, layers of silky tannins and a long, elegant finish.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 29. August 2018:

There’s a very intense core of dark fruit. A deep, ripe and quite savory palate with spices and dark herbs. Bitter chocolate, too. Real depth and power here. Super-fresh, dark spice and cola give a real spark to the finish. Thrilling. A blend of four old-vine parcels from a variety of soils. Drink in 2020.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The terrific 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin has lived up to my expectations from last year's visit. It's 100% Grenache, includes some parcels planted back in 1912, and half was vinified with stems. From sandy sites, it showcases the ability of Grenache to ripen fully yet retain a sense of elegance and lightness. It's full-bodied and velvety but also vibrant, with black cherry fruit and hints of chocolate balanced by incredibly silky tannins and freshness on the finish. Really impressive stuff.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 29. August 2018:

This is a profound expression of grenache with brambly, red fruit wrapped in wild herbs and flowers. Fresh, yet deeply ripe and expressive. The really succulent, deep and fresh tannins are a feature. Power with elegance! Brilliant. Pure grenache on sandy soil, from three parcels of vines, aged between 80 and 100 years. Drink in 2020.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits more dark fruit than I would've expected, with black cherries, black olives and tar all mingling on the nose. In the mouth, the blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a lush, lingering finish. Easy to drink now, it should age for at least a decade just on its sheer concentration and ripeness.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape 2016Verkostungsbersicht vom 29. August 2018:

Very complex and deeply flavored with quite sappy, stalk influence, accentuating garrigue and floral elements. Some stony aromas, too. The palate has a polished, plush and assertive core of plump, ripe, red fruit and a long, plush, pastry-like tannin texture. Drink or hold.

August 2018:

Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy, mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.

97 Parker Punkte Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes 2017Verkostungsbericht vom 30. August 2019:

The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience.
