Medium in body. with incredible persistence and exceptional poise. the 2016 Petit Mouton is sublime. Blood orange. mint and chalky notes add further nuances of freshness throughout. The 2016 is all class.

The 2016 Le Petit Mouton is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon. 35% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a deep garnet-purple color and gives up an intensely plummy nose with cigar box and fallen leaves scents leading to aroma layers of kirsch. red and black currants and tilled soil. Medium-bodied with a racy line of freshness cutting through the muscular fruit and a good. firm frame of grainy tannins to support. it finishes on a lingering menthol note.

The 2016 Le Petit Mouton is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon. 35% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc; it will be matured in 45% new oak. a little lower than in previous year (it used to be 60%). It has around 13.3% alcohol. It has a clean and precise bouquet with black berry. pencil shavings. crushed violet and a touch of oyster shell. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and ripe tannin. very harmonious and blessed with a satin-like texture. It is a more understated Le Petit Mouton. but you almost miss the precision and detail. the mineralité on the linear finish. This has great potential thanks to the sheer quality of the tannins here.

As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron electrifies the olfactory sense with a stunning bouquet of intense blackberry. cedar and graphite aromas that are quintessential Pauillac. Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.

Medium to full-bodied. rich and fantastically concentrated. the generous fruit is superbly framed by firm. ripe. grainy tannins with tons of pepper. cinnamon and cloves layers coming through on the finish. Truly. a legendary Lynch Bages!

The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

One of the most structured St. Pierre’s in years. A blend of 73 per cent cabernet sauvignon. 21 per cent merlot and six per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2024.

Frankly. I liked the 2016 more en primeur.
