Ripe dark plums, cassis and some fine, baking spices and minerals to the nose. The round, medium- to full-bodied palate has nice, mid-palate tension with finegrained tannins and bright cherry fruit. There is lovely finesse here. Drink now or hold.

This has a perfumed nose of wild strawberries, currants, lavender, chocolate orange and praline. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Pretty and polished with a fresh finish. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Charmail has an understated bouquet that unfolds with aeration, revealing pretty red berry fruit, rose petal and crushed stone. I admire the focus here. The palate is rounded, sweet and nicely poised, with nice grip. A little oak toward the finish suggests this will age with style. Very fine.

One of those wines that punches well above its price point, the 2018 Château Charmail comes from the northern part of the Médoc and is a mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot brought up in mostly used barrels. Beautiful darker currants and cassis fruits as well as tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth give way to medium to full-bodied 2018 with a plush, rounded texture, a terrific mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous wine and I think even a step up over the 2016. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 10-12 years.
