There’s a striking sense of deeply ripe plums on the nose. as well as notes of forest wood. black truffle. wet earth and sous bois. The palate has regal tannin shape and texture. Quite powerful but supple. the tannins carry long and fresh with ripe dark-plum flavors. Try from 2022.

The 2017 Certan de May is a powerful. dense wine. Graphite. smoke. grilled herbs and dark red and purplish fruit confer a real sense of gravitas that also comes through in the wine's unctuous fruit and overall richness. The 2017 packs a serious punch. that is for sure. Although not the last word in finesse. Certan de May offers plenty of richness and body. It is one of the bigger Pomerols of the year. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften.

The 2017 Certan de May is a blend of 60% Merlot. 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color. the wine charges out of the gate with bold expressions of preserved plums. blueberry compote and redcurrant jelly plus nuances of pencil shavings. forest floor and truffles. Medium-bodied. the palate delivers elegantly played black fruits and earthy accents with a lovely frame of fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness. finishing with a quiet intensity.

The 2017 Certan de May continues a run of wines that have left me scratching my head because experience of older vintages prove the heights it can achieve. Yet. recent vintages have fallen short of expectations. This feels a little green. especially when compared to the Latour-à-Pomerol and Hosanna on either side of my tasting at J-P Moueix. The palate is thankfully better with fine tannin. a keen line of acidity. tertiary in style with a touch of charcoal and tar towards the finish. If the aromatics had a little more. for want of a better word. “oomph”. then I might be more generous in my evaluation. Hopefully it will meliorate in barrel. Let’s see.

Mittel plus bis voll. Die Nase ist kräftig und würzig angelegt. mit Holunder und Paprika. sowie leicht rauchige speckige Noten. Kraftvoll am Gaumen. ebenfalls mit dieser Paprikawürze. Einem griffigen. kernigen Tannin. bleibt recht lang am Gaumen. Dieser Certan ist auch wieder einer der etwas kernigeren Vertreter des Gutes und im Kontext zu anderen Pomerol die würzigere kräftigere Machart.

Possibly the wine of the vintage
The 2017 Vieux Chateau Certan is a blend of 81% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from the highest point on the Pomerol plateau. Deep purple, with a heavenly bouquet of creme de cassis, blueberries, scorched earth, crushed violets, tobacco, and earth, this beauty is full-bodied, has incredible depth of fruit, ripe, present tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This estate has been on fire of late, and this is undoubtedly a worthy follow-on to the otherworldly 2015 and 2016. It has the depth of fruit and texture to offer pleasure even today, yet a solid 7-8 years of cellaring are warranted, and it should be long-lived. Bravo!

Composed of 80% Merlot. 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. the 2017 Vieux Château Certan sports a deep garnet-purple color. No mincing about. the bouquet absolutely prances out of the glass with stunning scents of candied violets. chocolate-covered cherries. roses and eucalyptus over a core of black plum preserves. mulberries. black raspberries and blueberry pie plus wafts of licorice. iron ore and truffles. Medium to full-bodied. the palate has fantastic balance and expression. with very fine-grained. silt-like tannins and well-knit freshness. finishing with epic length and perfume.

The purity and complexity is so mesmerizing for 2017. Raspberries and black fruit with sweet-tobacco and blood-orange undertones. Medium to full body. The tannins are so polished and pure and push out the edges on the wine. Fresh and pretty. Deep. Needs two or three years to perfect it. Try after 2023.

In this vintage. VCC is especially dark and somber. which adds to a real feeling of mysterious beauty. It is a towering achievement from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont.

100% Merlot gewachsen auf 2 Ha in unmittelbarer Sichtweite zu Le Pin und Vieux Chateau Certan. Mittlere bis volle Dichte. im Kern schwarz. schöne satte Frucht in der Nase. sehr feine Kirsche. auch hier wurde der Neuholzanteil zurückgefahren. trotzdem findet man diese zart süsslichen Anklänge wieder. Am Gaumen mit Kühle. sehr gute Harmonie keine Spur von Hitze. polierte Tannine. wieder diese unglaublich mineralische Frische. die nur dieses Terroir im Pomerol bieten kann. Würde man in die Wertung das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis einfliessen lassen. so müsste man deutlich höher punkten.

So ist und bleibt Haut Tropchaud 2018 auch in diesem herausfordernden JG eines der unglaublichsten Schnäppchen.

The 2016 L’Eglise-Clinet was matured in 80% new oak and bottled in mid-April 2018. Crystal clear in color. it has an equally crystal clear bouquet that is utterly seductive. featuring red cherries. wild strawberry. peony and iris flowers and a hint of bay leaf. You could sit and nose this all day. The balanced palate is medium-bodied and grippy in the mouth. displaying supple tannin and a perfect line of acidity. Again. there is a symmetry about this Pomerol that is utterly beguiling. and the persistence is up there with the very best. Simply put. this is one of the best L’Eglise-Clinet wines I have tasted in recent years. Stunning.
