The 2020 MarMar is a barrel selection based on the fruits of a cool and chalky plot of the Forster Ungeheuer grand cru. Pretty different from all the other Rieslings of the domaine, the MarMar opens with intense and concentrated ripe fruit intermingled with iodine notes and also sur lie and oak aromas. Round, lush and creamy on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and powerful, concentrated, sweet and saline Riesling with fine tannins and lingering vibrancy. It is most likely a long-distance runner, with a long, tight, intense and warm finish, yet its too rich and not stimulating enough for immediate pleasures, if you ask me. It's a rare and expensive Riesling. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. Tasted in November 2022.

Ozyetra ist eine Selektion spektakulärer Fässer aus dem Pechstein. Ähnlich wie der MarMar, ist dieser Wein unglaublich komplex und konzentriert, mit großer Spannung und Länge. Noble Reduktion, gegrillte Zitronen, feines Holz. Ein ganz besonderer Wein!

The 2020 Riesling Ozyetra is a selection of the best barrel from the grand cru Pechstein and thus is 100% Riesling. The concentrated and complex nose is deep, pure and phenolic as well as saline and flinty, with iodine and frankincense notes. Full-bodied, round and rich on the palate, this is a savory, saline and refreshing, dry but very intense and mouth-filling Riesling with fine tannins structuring a long, intense and powerful finish. Due to its richness, it's not as pure and fresh at this stage as the "generic" Pechstein GG, but surely it's a long-distance runner. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. Tasted in November 2022.

"Ein dichter, intensiver und sehr tiefer Riesling von einer außergewöhnlichen Lage" (von Winning)

Der Weingut Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling trocken Grosses Gewächs ist der vielleicht spannendste Wein im Rieslingsortiment von Von Winning (mit Ausnahme der sehr raren Weine Kirchenstück GG und dem ungeheuerlichen MarMar). Die Lage schuldet den Namen dem schwarzen Gesteinsboden aus Basalt. Die Weine von hier erinnern gern an Sancerre mit ausgeprägten Feuersteinnoten. Ist dies zu vordergründig, kann schnell eine gewisse Eindimensionalität durch zuviel Mineralik entstehen. Nicht so beim Weingut Von Winning Pechstein GG Riesling trocken Grosses Gewächs, denn Stephan Attmann weiß um seine Lagen und Reben und auch um den gewünschten Stil. So ist auch dieses GG fordernd, komplex und von herrlicher Tiefe. Aber ebenso kraftvoll und nach etwas Zeit der Belüftung durchaus als charmant fruchtbetont zu bezeichnen. Einer der ganz großen Weine des Landes!

Lime-yellow in color and complex on the Burgundian, smoky nose, Stephan Attmann's 2019 Pechstein GG is probably the greatest he has produced since the legendary 2010 vintage. It is bright and intense on the nose, with refreshing lime and lemon aromas intertwined with flinty notes of crushed stones, lemon zest, leaves and a touch of vanilla, iodine and fresh oak. This is a full-bodied, rich and juicy, highly elegant and firmly structured Pechstein with very fine tannins and almost slightly sweetish fruit, even though I suppose this wine is entirely dry and just rich in extracts. This is mouth-filling, juicy and quite hedonistic Pechstein still doesn't have the electrifying vibration of the 2010, but it has quite a lot of other talents. Tasted as a sample in May 2020.

The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly lactic entry and fine acidity, maybe not quite as "crunchy" as I recall, yet still satisfyingly persistent.

The second wine of Château Calon Ségur, the 2020 Le Marquis De Calon Ségur is unquestionably noteworthy. A blend of 54% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it spent 17 months in 30% new French oak, with the balance in once-used oak. Redcurrants, chocolate, spice, graphite, and a kiss of spicy wood all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and terrific purity. I'd happily drink a glass any time over the coming 10-15 years.

The 2020 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol of 14.6%. It is aging for an anticipated 17 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Deep purple-black in color, it bursts from the glass with bombastic scents of stewed black plums, crème de cassis and blueberry pie with nuances of violets and licorice, plus a waft of menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of juicy black fruits with plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing spicy. This is a very different style from the grand vin (Calon-Ségur), but also very delicious.

The 2020 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur offers blackberry, briary, brown spices and undergrowth on its backward nose that demanded 30 minutes in the glass to really open. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly angular opening. There is good acidity here, with a touch of herbaceousness developing on the finish that is a little abrupt.
