Chateau La Serre
Chateau La Serre

This 7 hectare vineyard is situated along the edge of Saint-Émilion’s famous limestone terrace, just a few dozen meters from the center of this medieval town. The vineyard is planted on a south-facing limestone plateau (hence its name, “the greenhouse”) covered with a thin layer of clay and averages 35 years of age.
M. Luc d’Arfeuille, the estate’s passionate owner, favors a traditional approach in both the vineyard and the winery and his methods ensure that this exceptional terroir is perfectly expressed in his wines. The soil is tilled manually to avoid the use of herbicides, and vineyard work is kept to the minimum to allow the vineyard’s natural character to shine through. Traditional interventions such as pruning and disbudding suffice to control yields. The estate has recently introduced some modern elements, such as pre-fermentary cold maceration and, more recently, optical sorting, to allow only the purest expression of this privileged terroir. M. d’Arfeuille and his team seek balance in all aspects of winemaking, pursuing the legendary elegance of the wines that have been produced on this historic land for centuries. The wines of Château La Serre are deep and generous with a streak of minerality.

90 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau La Serre 2016 Saint EmilionVerkostungsbericht vom 30. November 2018:

The 2016 La Serre is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It has a medium garnet-purple color and reveals a vibrant nose of red cherries, blueberry pie and fresh plums with nuances of pencil lead, wild sage and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, refreshing and wonderfully juicy in the mouth, it has a lovely soft texture and a pleasant herbal lift on the finish.

91 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau La Serre 2016 Saint EmilionVerkostungsbericht aus Januar 2019:

The 2016 La Serre is plump and juicy, with plenty of immediacy that will make it nearly impossible to resist young. Succulent black cherry, plum, new leather, tobacco, spice and new oak all give the 2016 soft contours. Medium in body and yet quite fleshy, the 2016 is impeccable. La Serre could be a bit less monolithic, but it is undoubtedly quite tasty.

This has aromas of hung meat, spicy red and dark plums and cherries with some chalky nuances. This leads to a succulent, juicy and vibrant array of fresh, crisp tannins that deliver fresh red-berry flavors. Try from 2022.

Ripe, open and very enticing, with lots of intertwined blueberry, boysenberry and plum compote flavors, carried by licorice threads and backed by a polished finish.

89-91 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint EmilionLisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 La Serre is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it offers up seductive scents of baked blackberries, blueberry tart and warm plums with nuances of black raspberries, oolong tea and cloves plus a touch of mincemeat pie. The medium-bodied palate is soft and plush with background freshness supporting the berry preserves flavors, finishing with a peppery kick.

89-92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 La Serre is bold, punchy and exuberant. An explosion of inky blue/purplish fruit makes a strong opening impression. Big tannins add to the wine's outspoken, somewhat brash personality. The new oak needs time to integrate, but that should not be an issue in time. Although not especially polished, at least not today, La Serre packs a good bit of punch. und vergibt ihm 89-92 Punkte.

Man spürt Lakritze, Cassis etwas rauchiges. Im Mund straff, mit super lebendiger Säure, kraftvolle und reife Tannine. Er kling in einem langen sauberen Finale aus. und vergibt ihm 92-94 Punkte.

Chocolate, tobacco, blueberry and wet-earth aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Loads of beautiful fruit, yet it remains reserved and polished. One of the best ever?

91-93+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau La Serre 2019 Saint Emilion Lisa Perrotti Brown bewertet den Chateau La Serre 2019 Saint Emilion im Juni 2020:

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 La Serre sashays out of the glass with a gorgeous nose of potpourri, wilted roses, Darjeeling tea and powdered cinnamon over a core of Black Forest cake, preserved plums and mulberries with wafts of dark chocolate and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is beautifully poised, offering layer upon layer of perfumed black fruits with wonderfully plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy. Nicely done!

91-93 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau La Serre 2019 Saint Emilion Neal Martin bewertet den Chateau La Serre 2019 Saint Emilion im Juni 2020:

The 2019 La Serre, the Saint-Émilion property owned by the d'Arfeuille family and run by J-P Moueix, has been a little gem in their line-up in recent years. The Merlot was picked 23 to 25 September, the Cabernet Franc on 5 October before élevage in 50% new oak. This has a nicely defined, vivacious and expressive nose with black cherries, iodine and hints of cassis. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins, wonderful tension, not a deep or immensely structured Saint-Émilion, yet graceful and very harmonious on the finish. Superb.
