Chateau La Serre

Chateau La Serre

This 7 hectare vineyard is situated along the edge of Saint-Émilion’s famous limestone terrace, just a few dozen meters from the center of this medieval town. The vineyard is planted on a south-facing limestone plateau (hence its name, “the greenhouse”) covered with a thin layer of clay and averages 35 years of age.
M. Luc d’Arfeuille, the estate’s passionate owner, favors a traditional approach in both the vineyard and the winery and his methods ensure that this exceptional terroir is perfectly expressed in his wines. The soil is tilled manually to avoid the use of herbicides, and vineyard work is kept to the minimum to allow the vineyard’s natural character to shine through. Traditional interventions such as pruning and disbudding suffice to control yields. The estate has recently introduced some modern elements, such as pre-fermentary cold maceration and, more recently, optical sorting, to allow only the purest expression of this privileged terroir. M. d’Arfeuille and his team seek balance in all aspects of winemaking, pursuing the legendary elegance of the wines that have been produced on this historic land for centuries. The wines of Château La Serre are deep and generous with a streak of minerality.

The 2016 La Serre is plump and juicy. with plenty of immediacy that will make it nearly impossible to resist young. Succulent black cherry. plum. new leather. tobacco. spice and new oak all give the 2016 soft contours. Medium in body and yet quite fleshy. the 2016 is impeccable. La Serre could be a bit less monolithic. but it is undoubtedly quite tasty.

89-92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau La Serre 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 La Serre is bold. punchy and exuberant. An explosion of inky blue/purplish fruit makes a strong opening impression. Big tannins add to the wine's outspoken. somewhat brash personality. The new oak needs time to integrate. but that should not be an issue in time. Although not especially polished. at least not today. La Serre packs a good bit of punch. und vergibt ihm 89-92 Punkte.

Man spürt Lakritze. Cassis etwas rauchiges.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 La Serre is sporting a lot of cedar at this nascent stage, giving way to notes of crushed black plums, fresh blackberries and boysenberries with hints of sassafras, clove oil and mocha. The medium-bodied palate has a great intensity of fresh black fruits with ripe, rounded tannins and a lively line, finishing long and spicy.

94-95 Suckling-Punkte für den Chateau La Serre 2020
James Suckling schreibt zum Chateau La Serre 2020 Saint Emilion Folgendes:

A medium-bodied red with redcurrant, berry and light chocolate character. It’s creamy and chewy. Yet, it shows polish and refinement.

90-92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau La Serre 2020
Das meint die Vinous-Mannschaft um Antonio Galloni zum Chateau La Serre:

The 2020 La Serre has (yet another) gorgeous, sensual and very pure bouquet of dark cherries, hints of cassis and wilted violet scents, the new oak seamlessly integrated. It reminds me of the 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent black cherries and blueberry and saturated tannins counterpoised by a fine bead of acidity. It turns quite citric toward the end, and although it might not quite deliver the persistence of the 2018, this is another fine La Serre that should give 12–15 years of drinking pleasure.
