Just about a perennial must-buy, the 2020 Château Gloria is another terrific vintage for this Saint-Julien château, which always seems to turn out a fabulous wine that sells for a great price. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as impressive aromatics of ripe blackcurrants, plums, camphor, smoked tobacco, and gravelly earth, it's a wine that blossoms with time in the glass. (I followed this bottle for multiple days.) Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has beautifully polished tannins, outstanding balance, and the more focused style of the vintage. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Opaque purple-black colored, the 2020 Gloria comes soaring out of the glass with notes of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums and blueberry compote, followed by suggestions of powdered cinnamon, cedar chest and menthol, plus a waft of graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is completely coated with juicy black fruits, framed by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 11% Petit Verdot, aging for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. The alcohol is 13.3%.

The 2020 Gloria has an intense nose of penetrating blackberry, raspberry, crushed violet and crushed stone aromas. After 20 minutes, this just blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity and just a touch of espresso and orange peel toward the finish, which remains taught and focused. What a wonderful Gloria! This might actually surpass its sibling, Château St. Pierre, this year.

Surpassing both the 2016 and 2018, this inky-hued Saint-Julien offers a round, lush, full-bodied style as well as gorgeous aromatics of black cherries, blueberries, loamy earth, chocolate, and spring flowers. The vintage doesn't get any sexier, and this has sweet tannins, an opulent mouthfeel, and riveting purity and finesse. While it already offers pleasure, it's going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for 25+.

The 2020 Léoville Las Cases is a classic in the making, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis, loamy soil, violets and dark chocolate framed by a discreet touch of new oak. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's rich and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's built for the cellar.

One of the greatest and most consistent estates of the Médoc, Léoville Las Cases is in terrific form today. The core of the estate is the 50-hectare "Clos," surrounded by walls and bordering the Gironde to the immediate south of its neighbor, Latour. In the vineyards, where Cabernet Sauvignon rules, the team are experimenting with cover crops and biodynamic methods, and in the cellars and chai, winemaking remains very traditional. Another 2020 that's going to demand patience, the 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot that was raised in 80% new French oak. It's a regal, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, flawlessly balanced 2020 with a pure core of cassis and darker currant fruits, a layered, seamless mouthfeel that carries substantial tannins, perfectly integrated oak, and subtle floral, mineral, and leafy herb nuances. Playing in the concentrated yet focused and structured style of the vintage, it's going to need a decade to hit the early phases of its prime drinking window and will have 50-75 years of longevity.

This is another utterly brilliant wine from this team, which has been producing First Growth quality wines for many years now. The blend of the 2020 is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 80% new barrels, hitting 13.58% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.81. It will benefit from just 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 50 years or more if well stored. Bravo. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

The blend is 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful bouquet of red and black cherries, currants, leafy tobacco, and cedar pencil, with a touch of damp earth that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has plenty of mid-palate depth and richness, velvety tannins, and a great finish. This plush, up-front, expansive, wonderfully textured Saint-Julien will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. It's the finest example from this château I've tasted. Bravo!

Lastly, the 2020 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is another legendary wine from this château that has been on an incredible run over the past decade. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that was brought up all in new French oak, it has a saturated purple hue to go with an incredible, mineral-laced bouquet of crème de cassis, liquid violets, graphite, and tobacco leaf. More structured and concentrated than any of the Léovilles, this blockbuster, deep, concentrated, full-bodied Saint-Julien has off-the-charts purity, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. I wrote in my notes, "Like the 2010, only better." You won't find a more concentrated yet flawlessly balanced and elegant wine out there. Napanook 2020 Napa Valley Yountville

Die Dominus Estate, Yountville, Kalifornien, wurde 1983 von Christian Moueix gegründet. Sie liegt auf dem berühmten Napanook-Weinberg und war in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren die Quelle der Früchte für einige der besten Weine des Napa Valley. Die Geschichte des Weinbergs lässt sich bis zu den Anfängen des Napa Valley zurückverfolgen: 1838 pflanzte George Yount, nach dem die Stadt Yountville benannt wurde, dort erstmals Weinreben an. Heute werden auf diesem historischen Weingut drei Weine produziert: Dominus, sein Flaggschiff, Napanook und Othello.

Die Früchte für den 2020 Napanook (wie auch für den 2020 Dominus) wurden vor dem Beginn des Glasfeuers am 27. September geerntet und bestehen zu 88 % aus Cabernet Sauvignon, 7 % Cabernet Franc und 5 % Petit Verdot. Der Duft von roten Johannisbeeren und Kirschen weist den Weg, unterstützt von Noten von dunkler Schokolade und Mokka. Er ist mittel bis vollmundig und fühlt sich seidig an, trotz eines Hauchs von Wärme am Gaumen, während der lange Abgang einen Hauch von roter Paprika und einen Hauch von Robustheit aufgreift.

Christian Moueix began our tasting of the 2015 vintage with a big smile. “We loved the vintage from the beginning.” he commented simply. Dominus winemaker Tod Mostero explained why 2015 was special: “We had a lot of winter rain—15 inches in December 2014. But then we had a very dry spring—just two inches in March and April. This equated to less vegetative growth. because when you have very little rain in spring. the vegetative growth tends to be limited. This means you need less water in the summer. since the vines prepare themselves for a dry growing season. Because we dry farm. the roots grow deeper and access water that normally wouldn’t be available. We had a similar profile in 2013. The 2015 temperatures were higher than normal but not excessive. Yields were about the same as 2013—smaller than average. The grapes were small. We experienced an early budburst. flowering and harvest. with harvest starting on September 2nd and finished by September 30th."

Der Kern ist dicht und undurchsichtig, nur eine minimale Aufhellung zum Rand hin. Die Nase bietet eine Fülle dunklen schwarzen Beeren, süsse Kirschnuancen, eine frische kühlende Nuance. Sehr behutsames Toasting, man hat wohl aus dem 2015er seine Schlüsse gezogen und geht etwas behutsamer mit dem Neuholzanteil um. Im Mund totale Balance bei maximalem aromatischen Druck. Perfekt polierte Tannine, lang, frisch, kühl, druckvoll und nochmal lang! Einfach ein genialer Weinwert, dessen Winemaker-Team den Jahrgang perfekt interpretiert hat. 93-95 Punkte.

It's a fabulous effort from Technical Director Jérôme Aguirre and his team. Don't miss it.
