The 2019 Beaumont has turned out very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, pencil shavings and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and melting tannins, it's charming and nicely balanced. It's the finest wine from this large château that I can remember tasting.

The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and not quite as supple as before, though I appreciate the tangy seaweed note toward the finish. Just what you want from a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur.

Dieser Wein ist eine Wucht. Eine Wucht und eine Sensation! Dieser Wein gibt sich so selbstbewusst und betörend, dass wir so gut wie immer von unseren Kunden als Rückmeldung bekommen: „Wow! Undurchsichtig, fast schwarz in der Farbe. Konzentriert und üppiges Duftbild nach dunklen Beeren und schwarzen Kirschen, am Gaumen intensiv, rassig, unerhört lebendig und würzig, mit richtig viel von Allem. Viel Saft, viel Frucht, ordentlich viel weiches Gerbstoff, eine satte Portion Säure, um den Wein auszubalancieren. Phänomenaler Stoff!“ Ganz gelassen nicken wir unseren in Fahrt gekommenen Kunden zu und fühlen uns wieder einmal bestätigt: Dieser Wein, der Corral de Campanas aus dem Hause Quinta Quietud ist wirklich etwas ganz besonders. In seiner Qualitäts- und Preisklasse spielt er in Spanien ganz oben mit dabei. Aber was ist das Erfolgsgeheimnis dieses Weines? Erst einmal seine Genetik. Das etwas mehr als 20 ha große Weingut verfügt über einen sehr großen Bestand an sehr alten Reben. In Spanien gelten Reben erst ab einem Alter von ca. 70 bis 80 Jahren als alt. Hier im Nirgendwo, in der Provinz Zamora, sind die Reben sehr oft 100 Jahre und älter.

Vor ein paar Jahren entschied Jean Francois, der französische Weinmacher der Bodega, seinen „großen“ Wein, die Quinta Quietud Reserva aufzuwerten. Dies erzielte er durch eine noch strengere Selektion der Beeren und eine Verlängerung der Ausbauzeit im Barrique. Alles, was nicht mehr in den großen Quinta einfließt, beflügelt also neuerdings den Corral. Außerdem ist der etwas unkonventionelle Ausbau des Weines mitverantwortlich, dass der Wein vor Energie und Power strotz: Die Hälfte des Weines wird in kleinen Holzfässern ausgebaut, das sorgt viel Tiefe und Struktur, die andere Hälfte wird bei niedrigen Temperatuten im Stahltank gelagert und bringt die satte Frucht und die Lebendigkeit in den Wein. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aging for 12-14 months in French oak barrels, 30% new, the 2020 Gironville has 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black colored, it shoots out of the glass with well-defined cassis and blackberry scents, plus hints of bay leaves, cedar chest and graphite with a touch of cracked black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is chock-full of crunchy black fruits with a firm, grainy frame and plenty of freshness, finishing long and lively. This is seriously impressive Cabernet, punching well above its weight!

The 2019 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has turned out beautifully in bottle. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild blueberries, raspberries, violets, rose petals and forest floor, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered, with a lively core of fruit, bright acids and fine, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, precise, saline finish. It displays all the structural refinement and vibrancy of flavor that this sector of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau is capable of.

From one of my favorite châteaux on the Right Bank, the 2019 Château Beauséjour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) is 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. It's a tighter, more closed 2019, yet it offers beautiful purity and focus in its cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as notes of tobacco leaf, graphite, chocolate, and chalky minerality. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and again, with this remarkable purity and precision, it has enough tannins to warrant 4-6 years in the cellar and will be incredibly long-lived. It's a beautiful Saint-Emilion. It’s worth pointing out that the 2019 is the vintage bottled by Nicolas Thienpont and starting in 2021, the estate is in the hands of Josephine Duffau-Lagarrosse.

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse, matured in 60% new oak, has maintained wonderful purity on the nose of ebullient red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, very elegant and poised and perhaps delivering less of the blue fruit element than I noticed from barrel. The cohesive palate conveys exquisite balance, fine, slightly granular tannins and a very subtle ferrous note toward the finish. This is an understated wine that is endowed with ample freshness, and I can see it aging beautifully for 30 or more years.

Espresso, chocolate, iron, leather, licorice and sweet spice add to an impression of virile power and intensity. Big, strapping tannins add to an impression of muscle. The 2019 needs time, but it is a hugely promising wine. It is also one of the most tannic wines in Saint-Émilion.

The 2019 Trotte Vieille has closed up a little on the nose, yet there are still very attractive black cherries and iodine scents on the nose that gradually unfold with aeration. A touch of fresh fig appears in the background. The well-balanced palate delivers pure blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with graphite and minerals. Almost Left Bank in style, this shows great clarity and fans out wonderfully on the finish. Superb.

The 2019 Canon has turned out brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of raspberries and red plums mingled with notions of raw cocoa, dark chocolate, pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and multidimensional, it's one of the most refined, elegant right bank wines of the vintage, with a deep core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a superb achievement for Nicolas Audebert and his team.

8 Jan, 2022 – Blackberries, blueberries and dark chocolate with bark, mushrooms and chalk. Lavender, too. Full-bodied with firm tannins that are polished and velvety. White pepper, gesso and crushed stone. It’s full-bodied and layered with tightness and focus and a long finish. It’s solid and stalwart, as usual. Reminds me of the very special 1955. One for the cellar. Give this until 2026 to see what it really has.

A second sample at the château showed a bit more depth on the saline finish, and based on that example, I think this will become an outstanding Saint-Émilion.

The 2019 Certan de May has turned out very well, offering up aromas of rich cherries, cassis, loamy soil and creamy but nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, layered and lively, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish, this is beautifully balanced Pomerol that no doubt benefits from the perspective of consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet.
