Ridge Vineyards
Ridge Vineyards

Ridge's 2017 Lytton Springs opens up beautifully, with bright acids that drive a whole range of red/purplish fruit intermingled with floral notes. Creamy and ample in feel, the 2017 boasts superb balance and pedigree. Readers lucky enough to owe it should plan on cellaring it for at least a few years.

Once again an overachiever, Ridge's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is regal. Aromatically intense and deep on the palate, the 2016 proves to be utterly captivating from the very first taste. Dark fruit, chocolate, licorice, dried flowers, leather and menthol infuse the 2016 with remarkable complexity. In 2016, the last year of the drought cycle Ridge made one of the very best editions of this wine. Just as remarkably, the 2016 is incredibly harmonious for such a young wine.

95 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Ridge Lytton Springs 2016 ZinfandelAntonio Galloni beschreibt den Ridge Lytton Springs 2016 Zinfandel im Juni 2018 wie folgt:

The 2016 Lytton Springs is a powerful, dense wine. Black cherry, plum, lavender, new leather, cloves, licorice and menthol flesh out. Deep, plush and richly textured, the 2016 Lytton Springs packs a real punch. The 23% Petite Sirah is felt in the wine's darkness and overall gravitas. There is more than enough richness and structure to support many years of fine drinking. What a gorgeous wine this is.

The 2016 Lytton Springs is also excellent, offering up aromas of crushed currants, plums, candied violets and baked clay. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and youthfully chewy, with a crunchy core of fruit and fine-grained but firm structuring tannins. It's a bit more burly and rustic than the satiny, sumptuous Geyserville this year—no surprise, given that the blend contains fully 23% Petite Sirah (alongside 69% Zinfandel, 6% Carignane and 2% Mataro).

This blend of 69 per cent zinfandel, 23 per cent petite sirah, six per cent carignane and two per cent mataro has an x-factor attraction, in that all components are elevating each other to greater heights. The sum is more than the parts. Attractive red berries with blackberries, blackcurrants and red plums, too. This is assertively structured and will deliver best from 2022.

94 Punkte Vinous für den Ridge Chardonnay 2017 Estate Santa Cruz MountainsVerkostungsnotiz von Antonio Galloni von Juni 2019:

The 2017 Chardonnay Estate is soft, silky and exceptionally polished. White flowers, mint, orchard fruit, lemon confit and white pepper give the 2017 striking aromatic top notes that add nuance to the delicate, beautifully layered fruit. This understated Chardonnay is all class. The Estate represents 85% of Ridge's production in 2017, while the remaining 15% will be bottled as Monte Bello.

Ridge Chardonnay Estate 2017 Santa Cruz MountainsJebDunnuck.com (June 2019): 94 Points

“The 2017 Chardonnay Estate has a Burgundian reductive quality as well as first-rate notes of caramelized orchard fruits, crushed rock, and subtle toasty, nutty notes. Rich, medium to full-bodied, with bright acidity, it has beautiful mid-palate depth, and well as the class and structure to keep for 15+ years. This is beautifully done.”

Sun-bleached straw color. Pineapple, melon, honeysuckle, and citrus. Appealing fruit entry, refreshing acidity, with an elegant texture. Long, smooth finish. EB (12/18)
100% Chardonnay

A cold winter delayed bud-break. Late spring rain disrupted bloom, reducing yields by a quarter. Summer was warm at times, but mostly foggy and cool. This slowed ripening which produced greater flavor and firmer acidity. We picked nine parcels in early September, and barrel fermented each separately. The most elegant, that showed the finest fruit, were selected for this superb chardonnay. It can be enjoyed now.

92 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Ridge Geyserville 2017 Zinfandel Sonoma CountyVerkostungsnotiz von Antonio Galloni von Juni 2019:

The 2017 Zinfandel Geyserville exudes energy, but it is also very tight and closed in on itself. Time in the glass helps the wine open up, but only to a limited extent. Pretty scents of leather, savory herbs, spice and earthiness hint at what is to come. Readers should plan on being patient, but Ridge lovers know that. In most years, Geyserville starts hitting its stride around age ten.

93-95 Parker Punkte für den Geyserville 2017 von RidgeWilliam Kelley am 31.Mai 2018

A first look at the 2017 Geyserville Proprietary Red Wine revealed immense promise. Despite having been in barrel for a mere six months, it's already offering up complex aromas of raspberries, blackberries and exotic spice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, pure and succulent, with superb concentration, a lovely line of ripe acidity and a chalky, fine-grained finish. The wine attained 14.7% alcohol, and Baugher believes it will be one of the best renditions of Geyserville in a decade.

93 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Ridge Lytton Estate Petite Syrah 2017 Sonoma CountyVerkostungsnotiz von Antonio Galloni von Juni 2019:

The 2017 Petite Syrah Lytton Estate is another superb wine from Ridge's Lytton ranch. Inky dark fruit and expressive savory notes infuse this bombastic, heady Petite with tremendous nuance and surprising freshness. The 2017 is very young at this stage, but it clearly has the structure to age. My impression is that it will be even better once some of the baby fat melts away. Even today, though, the 2017 is superb.

Ridge Vineyards 2016 Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon

Weinbeschreibung:

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc

96-98+ Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Ridge Monte Bello 2016 Santa Cruz MountainsWilliam Kelley am 31. Mai 2018: 96-98+ Punkte

The 2016 Monte Bello is stunning, bursting from the glass with aromas of crushed currants, plums, charcoal, sweet spices, black truffle and rich soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, immensely deep and very concentrated, with an ample core of dark fruit that almost entirely conceals its rich chassis of tannin. The finish is long, tensile and chalky. Eric Baugher observes that 2016 was a drought year but that the vines were less stressed than in 2015, thanks to Spring precipitation, and it wasn't necessary to irrigate. Summer saw wild temperature swings, and though it was below average in summation, some days were very warm. The final Monte Bello blend contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, which represents a slight change from when I tasted it a year ago, though its profile remains very much the same. The 2016 checks in at 13.8% alcohol and pH 3.49. Cellar it for a decade and follow it for another three.

One of the highlights in this tasting, the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics, bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly, the 2016 is very primary today, with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that, though, the 2016 pulses with energy and simply exceptional balance. Don't miss it!

Bottled in March of 2018 and a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello offers a more streamlined, elegant, and ultra-classic style compared to the 2014 and 2015, which are slightly bigger, richer wines. Boasting a deep purple color and beautiful purity in its crème de cassis, blueberry, white flowers, and vanilla bean, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and perfect balance. It doesn’t have the sheer depth of fruit of some of the blockbuster years, yet makes up for it with its incredible purity, poise, and balance. Relatively approachable for a Monte Bello, it’s still going to see its 30th birthday in fine form.” – Jeb Dunnuck (February 2019)

Winemaker Tasting Notes:
Opaque purple-ruby color. Ripe blackberry fruit, barrel spice, anise, violets, and crushed limestone. Opulent mountain fruit entry, firm acid, and fine-grain, age-worthy tannins. Powerful complexity and tremendous length to the finish.

Late winter rains brought some relief from another year of drought. Monte Bello’s fractured limestone held onto this moisture for the vines to draw on through a mild summer. Unusually cold nights slowed ripening and developed firm acidity, while gentle extraction during fermentation kept tannins in balance. Through careful blind-tasting twentythree lots were assembled and spent eighteen months in barrel. This superb vintage will age beautifully over the next thirty years.
