Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 on the desire of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli to turn their passion for wine into their life dream. It was a revolutionary project rooted in their hometown of Bolgheri, at the time not as famous as now. The idea was simple but decisive: to originate in the vineyard, investing completely in research and experimentation in planting including varieties lesser used in Bolgheri. 1987 marked the initial bottling’s of the Le Macchiole production, though with a selection now no longer in existence. Only in 1989, when Paleo Rosso was born, was there the first interpretation of our Bolgherese style. The 1990’s would be crucial for the definition of the winery: a greater awareness for the disposition of the land, the decision to introduce high density planting and the innovative and risky decision to produce mono-varietal wines. From this work results in 1994, Messorio (100% Merlot) and Scrio (100% Syrah) arrived, and following in 2001 Paleo Rosso transforms to 100% Cabernet Franc. Eugenio achieved, with commitment and determination, the esteem of one of the great names from the territory, but, in 2002, when finally starting to reap the fruits of his work, he tragically passed away. Cinzia then took over the reins of the farm with the help of a team of young talent in all roles of the business. Within few years these personalities gave the imprint of their professionalism, ability, passion and care for detail from the vine to the wine. From all of these energies Cinzia has always sought to produce wines demonstrating their unique position, wines not reproducible. There are 24 hectares of estate owned vineyards, organically farmed with each harvest producing 5 wines: Paleo Bianco - Toscana IGT, Bolgheri Rosso - DOC Bolgheri, Paleo Rosso - Toscana IGT, Scrio - Toscana IGT and Messorio - Toscana IGT.

Der Paleo 2016 Rosso aus der Region Bolgheri ist eine weitere Schöpfung im Le Macchiole Sortiment. Der Paleo Rosso 2016 von Le Macchiole ist ein aus 100% Cabernet Franc vinifizierter Rotwein, der stets ein paar Jahre brauch um zu voller Grösse aufzusteigen. Als erstes Weingut in der Bolgheri wagte es damals Le Macchiole einen reinen Cabernet Franc zu kreieren, den Paleo Rosso. Es passt sehr gut in die Philosophie des Weinguts Le Macchiole, rebsortenreine Weine zu erzeugen. Neben dem Scrio einem reinen Syrah und dem Messorio einem reinen Merlot ist der Paleo Rosso der dritte im Bunde, eben aus 100% Cabernet Franc. Sicherlich ist der Messorio der teuerste Wein im Portfolio, der wahre Star und auch der wohl wichtigste Wein bei Le Macchiole ist der Paleo Rosso. In einigen Jahren übertrumpft der Paleo dann auch den Messorio der oft mehr als das doppelte des Paleo kostet.

There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc. with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible.

Cedar. mocha. rose petal. red plum and menthol are bright and beautifully sculpted. Paleo Rosso shows just how profound Cabernet Franc can be on the Tuscan Coast. This is a superb edition of the wine that. in my view. is the Macchiole flagship. The 2016 saw 30-35 days on the skins. followed by malolactic fermentation in cement and 18 months in French oak.

Doch der Bolgheri Rosso 2018 von Le Macchiole ist immer noch frisch und mit der nötigen Finesse ausgestattet. Er hat einfach alles was ein Wein in dieser Klasse braucht.

The wine's medium-bodied mouthfeel is freshened up by the balanced acidity that comes so easily in this cool but classic vintage. There are delicate hints of Mediterranean herb and dried mint on the close. This wine would make a fine partner to ravioli stuffed with ricotta and cooked in butter.

Messorio is a wine that beautifully reflects the characteristics of the vintage and is a very accurate measuring stick of how any single vintage will eventually perform both in terms of near-term accessibility and long-term cellar aging. That said, the Le Macchiole 2017 Messorio plays its strongest cards in terms of mouthfeel and texture, revealing a robust structure and firmly integrated tannins that come from both the richly concentrated fruit and the careful use of oak. The wine shows a heavy center of gravity and a solid base of dark fruit that is enhanced by caramel, brown sugar, spice and creamy blackberry preserves. It does offer immediate appeal, but I'd wait a few more years to give this 2017 Messorio more time to flesh out and evolve.

The 2017 Messorio (100% Merlot) is classy and polished to the core. It is also incredibly young and not at all forthcoming. Messorio is a wine that needs a surprising amount of time in bottle to truly shine. I expect that will be the case here as well. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit and density. Time in the cellar should allow for its aromatics to emerge more fully. Overall, though, this is a fairly restrained style, in keeping with the showing of 2017 Bolgheri reds more broadly. All the elements come together so gracefully in this striking wine. Production is down around 20%.

The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart.

The 2017 Paleo Rosso is superb. It is also the wine in this range that seems to have handled the rigors of 2017 best. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan Coast. The aromatics alone are so alluring. Sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar give Paleo its aromatic lift. Some varietal character has been baked out because of the heat of the year. In exchange, readers will find a Paleo Rosso that will drink well with just a year or two in bottle. The 2017 was fermented in cement and aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 90% new with light toast.

Released to much fanfare amidst growing popularity for this entry-level appellation on the Tuscan coast, the Le Macchiole 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is a beautiful specimen, thanks to its honest simplicity and its charming approach. The wine reveals good fruit complexity with blue and purple berries contrasted against toasted spice and baked earth. But if anything truly stands out here, it is the expert integration and generally seamlessness of the wine's various moving parts. This is a terrific wine to uncork for a fun family meal with pasta and grilled meats around the kitchen table.
