Le Macchiole
Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 on the desire of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli to turn their passion for wine into their life dream. It was a revolutionary project rooted in their hometown of Bolgheri, at the time not as famous as now. The idea was simple but decisive: to originate in the vineyard, investing completely in research and experimentation in planting including varieties lesser used in Bolgheri. 1987 marked the initial bottling’s of the Le Macchiole production, though with a selection now no longer in existence. Only in 1989, when Paleo Rosso was born, was there the first interpretation of our Bolgherese style. The 1990’s would be crucial for the definition of the winery: a greater awareness for the disposition of the land, the decision to introduce high density planting and the innovative and risky decision to produce mono-varietal wines. From this work results in 1994, Messorio (100% Merlot) and Scrio (100% Syrah) arrived, and following in 2001 Paleo Rosso transforms to 100% Cabernet Franc. Eugenio achieved, with commitment and determination, the esteem of one of the great names from the territory, but, in 2002, when finally starting to reap the fruits of his work, he tragically passed away. Cinzia then took over the reins of the farm with the help of a team of young talent in all roles of the business. Within few years these personalities gave the imprint of their professionalism, ability, passion and care for detail from the vine to the wine. From all of these energies Cinzia has always sought to produce wines demonstrating their unique position, wines not reproducible. There are 24 hectares of estate owned vineyards, organically farmed with each harvest producing 5 wines: Paleo Bianco - Toscana IGT, Bolgheri Rosso - DOC Bolgheri, Paleo Rosso - Toscana IGT, Scrio - Toscana IGT and Messorio - Toscana IGT.

Le Macchiole Messorio 2015 Toscana Merlot
Le Macchiole Messorio 2015 mit 95 Punkten bei James SucklingJames Suckling beschreibt über den Paleo Rosso 2015 von Le Macchiole im September 2018:

An opulent nose that shows plum cake, blueberry muffins, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee, plum liqueur and hot stones. However, there just the right amount of freshness with thyme, violets and cedar. Full body, very chewy tannins and a long, decadent finish. Very intense, but it still shows form and tension. Drink in 2025.

Le Macchiole Messorio 2015 mit 97 Parker Punkten ausgezeichnetMonica Larner über den Paleo Rosso 2015 von Le Macchiole am 16. Mai 2019:

The 2015 Messorio is a true tribute to Merlot. It's not easy to faithfully render the distinctive characteristics of this grape, within such a tight margin of error, but the winemaking team at Le Macchiole has deftly achieved exactly that. With sourcing from the Puntone vineyard, Le Macchiole wanted to achieve less density yet more aromas of skin. The wine has a homogeneous feel, with huge generosity and fullness, and it delivers big, ripe cherry tones with so much luscious fruit and delineated persistence.

Really beautiful black fruit with freshly roasted coffee-bean aromas that follow through to a full body with silky and lightly chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Decadent. Cabernet franc. Drink or hold.
Le Macchiole Paleo 2016 IGT Toscana mit 97 Punkten bei ParkerMonica Larner über den Paleo Rosso 2016 von Le Macchiole am 16. Mai 2019:

There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible.

Paleo 2016 von Le Macchiole mit 98 Punkten vom Vinous-Team ausgezeichnetAntonio Galloni zum Paleo 2016 im März 2020:

A wine of breathtaking beauty, the 2016 Paleo Rosso possesses off the charts vertical intensity. Sweet floral and spiced notes soar out of the glass in a stunning wine endowed with fabulous depth in all of its dimensions. Cedar, mocha, rose petal, red plum and menthol are bright and beautifully sculpted. Paleo Rosso shows just how profound Cabernet Franc can be on the Tuscan Coast. This is a superb edition of the wine that, in my view, is the Macchiole flagship. The 2016 saw 30-35 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in cement and 18 months in French oak.

A fresh, vivid red with aromas of crushed blueberries and fresh flowers that follow through to a medium body. Firm tannins that are polished and relatively integrated. Drink or hold.

Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2017 DOC mit 91 Parker PunktenMonica Larner beschreibt den Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso 2017 am 16. Mai 2019 wie folgt:

As usual, Le Macchiole has done a great job with all of its releases, including the lower-end bottles such as the 2017 Bolgheri Rosso. There is a sure sense of precision and sharpness here with bright berry and black cherry. Those aromas show quality and craftsmanship. You would do well to pair this accessible, mid-weight wine with simple pasta topped with fresh tomato sauce.
