Chateau Leoville Poyferre - Saint-Julien

Das Chateau Leoville Poyferre entstand 1840 aufgrund verschiedener Teilungen des Gutes Leoville und wurde 1855 zum Zweiten Cru Classe ernannt. Die vom Mehltau bezwungene Familie Poyferre behielt das Chateau bis zum Jahre 1865 und verkaufte es dann an die Bankier- und Weinmaklerfamilie Lalande et Erlanger, die mit der Familie Lawton verwandt war. 1920 erwarb die Familie Cuvelier das Anwesen, die sich seit dem 19. Jahrhundert einen Namen im Weinhandel gemacht hatte. Didier Cuvelier übernahm 1979 die Leitung des Weinguts, um es wieder in die Spitzengruppe der Cru Classes zu bringen. Seither werden jedes Jahr bedeutende Investitionen ebenso im technischen wie auch im menschlichen Bereich getätigt. Sie stehen stets im Einklang mit dem außergewöhnlichen Terroir von Leoville Poyferre und haben zum Ziel dieses Terroir voll im Wein zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Diese ständigen innovativen Anstrengungen ermöglichen die Erzeugung eines großen Weines, der in die ganze Welt exportiert wird. Er zeichnet sich durch perfektes Gleichgewicht, viel Finesse, Eleganz und ein bemerkenswertes Reifepotenzial aus.

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich. ample and dramatic in bearing. the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften. but there is so much to look forward to. Graphite. menthol. lavender and licorice complement the inky blue/purplish fruit beautifully. The bottled wine has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than the en primeur sample. I tasted the 2016 three times. It's least favorable showing was at the château. For readers and proprietors who think wines always taste better on site...they don't.

Terrific intensity of dark berries. almost peppery blackcurrants and violets with attractive and integrated. spicy oak and an earthy edge. The palate has a super powerful and long. linear core with plenty of fruit flesh strapped in tight for a long and thrilling ride into the finish. A blend of 86 per cent cabernet and 14 per cent merlot. Try from 2024.

Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2016 Léoville Poyferré hits the ground running with intense cassis. violets. dark chocolate. menthol and fragrant earth notions complemented by nuances of cigar box and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is charged with energetic. super intense black fruit and floral layers. beautifully supported with super firm. ripe. grainy tannins and seamless freshness. This liquid is simply alive in the mouth. culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!

94+ A rich, powerful wine, the 2020 Léoville Poyferré offers up aromas of sweet berries, blueberry liqueur, exotic spices, incense and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, broad and layered, it's deep and concentrated, its ample core of fruit only partially concealing a hefty payload of sweet, powdery, generously extracted tannin. Poyferré is generally the most flamboyant and demonstrative of the three Léovilles, but in 2020, it's chunkier, broader shouldered and more brooding than usual.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is released in a stylish black bottle commemorating a century for the Cuvelier family, is reminiscent of the 2016 with its powerful, concentrated, yet vibrant and inward style. Pure crème de cassis, melted chocolate, loamy earth, graphite, and some spicy nuances all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a stacked mid-palate, nicely integrated oak, ripe tannins, and one hell of a great finish. This is another utterly brilliant wine from this team, which has been producing First Growth quality wines for many years now. The blend of the 2020 is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 80% new barrels, hitting 13.58% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.81. It will benefit from just 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 50 years or more if well stored. Bravo. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

Die Nase zeigt eine Süsse zu Beginn, das ist alles dunkelfruchtig und mit kleinen wilden Beeren im Mix, ganz feine schokoladige Nuancen. Im Mund mit einem samtigen und saftigen Einfluss. Die Tannine schmilzen wie Butter im Mund, ganz seidig und saftig bis ins klare aromatische Finale. Mittlerer bis kräftiger Körper. Wirklich sehr in Balance, seidige Tannine ohne Ende.

The 2022 Léoville Poyferré has turned out very nicely, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's ripe but lively, with supple tannins and a long, vanillin-inflected finish. This year, the team began picking their Merlot comparatively early and didn't perform a saignée (tank bleed), given the natural concentration of the vintage, though it remains the most flamboyant and demonstrative of the three Léoville estates, seeing some 80% new oak with malolactic fermentation in barrique for the new barrels. It will be a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

I was blown away by the 2022 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is a classic blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvest spanned from the 8th to the 28th of September, the vinification is in tronconique tanks (parcel by parcel), and the élevage will span 18-20 months in 80% new barrels. This inky hued beauty offers that rare mix of power and elegance and offers ample cassis and assorted blue fruits, full-bodied richness, an opulent, concentrated, yet flawlessly balanced mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and plenty of classic Saint-Julien violets, espresso roast, and crushed stone-like minerality. Despite its incredible concentration and depth, it stays beautifully balanced. In a region that seems to only talk about finesse and elegance, it's a relief to still have producers such as this producing powerful, intense, singular wines. Hats off to the Cuvelier family and their team.

The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window.

he 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence. Tasted three times.

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has the quintessential "LP" bouquet of perfumed blackberry, black plum, perhaps less tobacco than last year but still those hints of desiccated orange peel. It opens beautifully in the glass. The palate has a satin-like texture, a fine bead of acidity and fine pixelation. It is perhaps less luxuriant than I found this last year from barrel and has become slightly more linear, displaying a touch more breeding and precision. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a fabulous Saint-Julien with huge potential. 14.18% alcohol
