Chateau Gloria Saint Julien

1993 legte Henri Martin das Amt des Küfers nieder und machte als Winzer das Chateau Gloria zu seinem Lebenswerk. Geduldig und systematisch verhandelte er mit den befreundeten Besitzern der klassifizierten Weingüter von Saint-Julien, um Reihe für Reihe, Parzelle für Parzelle die Terroirs
zu kaufen, aus denen die Weinberge von Chateau Gloria heute bestehen. Eine wahre Meisterleistung, wenn man bedenkt, dass die gesamte Appellation Saint Julien nicht viel größer als 900 Hektar ist und sich fast ausschließlich im Besitz von elf Cru Classe befindet. In den 1970er Jahren hatte Henri Martin sein Ziel erreicht: sein Weingut war auf 50 Hektar gewachsen. Das Chateau Gloria ist aus Leidenschaft für den Wein entstanden. Alle berühmten Bordelaiser Chateaus besitzen eine lange Geschichte. Als Ausnahme von dieser Regel ist das Chateau Gloria die Schöpfung eines Mannes unserer Zeit, der seinem Wein mit harter und passionierter Arbeit zu höchstem Ansehen verholfen hat.

Gloria is once again fabulous. Brisk and vibrant. the 2018 has so much to offer. The 2018 is a bit more linear than other recent vintages (such as the 2016) but it nevertheless has a lot to offer. Bright red cherry. cedar. tobacco. spice and floral notes pulse with tremendous energy. The tannins need a few years in bottle to unwind. but there is so much to look forward to. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon. 32% Merlot. 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Tasted four times.

The 2018 Gloria has turned out beautifully. Medium in body, with terrific balance and tons of class, Gloria will especially appeal to readers in search of a wine that is not super-exuberant, as so many 2018s are. Bright floral notes, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this wonderfully expressive Saint-Julien. Give the tannins at least a few years to soften.

Just about a perennial must-buy, the 2020 Château Gloria is another terrific vintage for this Saint-Julien château, which always seems to turn out a fabulous wine that sells for a great price. Sporting a deep purple hue as well as impressive aromatics of ripe blackcurrants, plums, camphor, smoked tobacco, and gravelly earth, it's a wine that blossoms with time in the glass. (I followed this bottle for multiple days.) Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has beautifully polished tannins, outstanding balance, and the more focused style of the vintage. The 2019 Gloria is a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried flowers, menthol, herbs and cedar lend quite a bit of character. In 2019, Gloria is defined by its intensely feral personality and tannins. Perhaps time will help. Today, Gloria does not appear to be quite the charmer that it can be.

The 2019 Gloria has turned out very well, delivering aromas of blackcurrants, plums, burning embers and a deft framing of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with a vibrant core of ripe and fleshy fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish, this shows considerable promise.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins. Fresh and saline, this gets the saliva going with a precise, persistent finish and leaves hints of graphite on the aftertaste. Excellent.
