Chateau Angelus

Chateau Angelus

Chateau Angelus 2016 Saint Emilion

98 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Angelus 2016Antonio Galloni Januar 2019:

The 2016 Angélus is a total stunner. Despite its late bottling in September 2018. the 2016 is simply magnificent. Soaring aromatics and layers of bright. vibrant fruit are two of the main signatures in the 2016. The tannins. so often hard in young Angélus. are almost impossibly refined. Pomegranate. blood orange. raspberry jam. wild flowers and mocha are some of the many notes that race through the 2016. All the elements fall into place in a memorable. exquisite Saint-Émilion that is clearly one of the wines of the year. Don't miss it!

100 Sucklingpunkte für den Chateau Angelus 2016 Saint EmilionJames Suckling Februar 2019:

Subtle and profound aromas of blackberries. wet earth and sweet tobacco. Hints of spice. too. Full-bodied and so deep. It’s incredibly vertical and long. Just like looking down a well. Firm and powerful tannins. yet polished and balanced. Goes on for minutes. One of the greatest ever. Try after 2025.

The 2016 Angélus is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. aged 18 to 22 months in new barrels and foudres. Deep garnet-purple colored. it drifts effortlessly out of the glass with sensuous notes of lavender. candied violets. garrigue. Ceylon tea and iron ore with a core of warm black cherries. mulberries. ripe plums and aniseed plus wafts of cedar chest and cloves. Medium to full-bodied. the perfumed fruit whispers of great intensity and depth. with the vivacious fruit well knit into the plush. seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness. finishing long and mineral laced. Still very tightly wound with amazing tension at this stage. it truly needs a good 6-8 more years in bottle to deliver the fully expressed layers that this soft-spoken. profound beauty promises

Very gutsy in feel. with lots of tobacco leaf. loam and espresso notes swirling around a core of steeped black currant and warm fig fruit flavors. The muscular finish is a jumble right now. but there's ample acidity coiled within. A wine that clearly wants to stand out from the pack.

“This year we have slightly less Cabernet Franc in the blend because we are only using the oldest vines. planted by my grandfather. as a tribute.” Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal said. “These are 60- to 80-year-old Cabernet Franc vines.” From 2018. 10% of the entire Angelus crop will be aged in large oak foudres. “These produce tighter. more perfumed. brighter wines from less oxygen exposure.” Stephanie commented. The 2018 Angelus is blended of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. to be aged 18-22 months in barriques. 100% new. plus two new foudres. Medium to full-bodied. the palate delivers a wonderfully profound. multilayered. seamless experience of red and black fruits intertwined with earth. spice and floral notions and framed by exquisitely ripe. satiny tannins. finishing with amazing freshness and length. Incredibly. finely. expertly. seamlessly knit. Stunning.

95-98 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Angelus 2018 Saint EmilionAntonio Galloni bewertet den Chateau Angelus 2018 Saint Emilion wie folgt:

The 2018 Angelus is a fabulous wine from the de Bouard family. Often much more severe when it is young. the 2018 possesses stunning depth and remarkable finesse. I don't think I have tasted a young Angelus with this much finesse. In this vintage. Angelus is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc. which is to say more Merlot and less Franc than in the past. which may or may not represent more of a longer term shift. To be sure. the 2018 is glorious. with generous. pliant fruit and silky tannins that add to its considerable allure. Creme de cassis. new leather. spice and licorice build into the striking finish. What a wine.

This is wonderfully refined and balanced with such pretty depth. Full-bodied and so polished and pure. Subtle at first, then it takes off and keeps coming. Sophisticated. 60% merlot and 40% cabernet franc.

95-97 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Angelus 2020
Das meint die Vinous-Mannschaft um Antonio Galloni zum Chateau Angelus:

The 2020 Angélus was given 30–40 minutes to open. It has a very intense nose of multilayered blackberry, blueberry and wild strawberry scents, crushed violet and hints of iodine. It is quintessential Angélus in many ways, sleek and smooth, harmonious and seductive. Those qualities also come through on the palate. This is framed by fine tannins, the Cabernet components coming through strongly on the midpalate. Quite ferrous in some ways, allspice and subtle minty notes lending complexity toward the finish. It is not quite as persistent as the recently tasted 2018 from bottle, but it comes across a little more chiseled and intellectual.
