The 2016 Puy-Blanquet is a gorgeous. classically built Saint-Émilion that emphasizes freshness and purity. Deceptively medium in body. the 2016 is supple. deep and incredibly inviting. Sweet tobacco. cedar. leather and licorice add lovely aromatic top notes. Pliant and inviting. this incredibly delicious yet understated Saint-Émilion will be hard to resist in its youth. It is also one of the undisputed Sleeper gems of the vintage. Don't miss it.

The 2016 Puy-Blanquet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. It has plenty of lush red cherry and cranberry fruit on the nose. a smear of vanilla from the new oak that will be subsumed by the time of bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin. Yes. there is a bit of hardness here. but that will soften. and there is plenty of freshness on the grainy finish. Fine.

The 2016 Villemaurine is absolutely gorgeous. Powerful. ample and resonant. the 2016 is a beautifully intense. modern Saint-Émilion. Dark cherry. plum. mocha and licorice notes build into a crescendo of aromas. flavors and textures. Even with all of its natural intensity. the 2016 retains terrific freshness and energy. In 2016. Villemaurine is terrific. Hubert de Boüard consults. Tasted two times.

The 2016 Villemaurine is a blend of 80% Merlot an 20% Cabernet Franc aged in 80% new and 20% one-year-old barrels for 16 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color and lovely cedar. earth. baked cherries and warm plums notions waft from the glass followed by nuances of pencil shavings. cloves. cinnamon stick. star anise and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied bodied. the mid-palate slowly builds into loads of spicy layers with a pleasantly chewy texture and a long mineral-laced finish. About 2.966 cases produced.

A very elegant and beautifully balanced wine. in which the interplay of bright acidity. fine dry tannins and oyster-shell minerality is really fascinating. Very long. super bright finish. Chateau Figeac 2016 Saint Emilion

The 2016 Figeac is comprised of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon. 36% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored. the nose is a little broody and reticent at this very youthful stage. slowly unfolding to reveal profound plum preserves. crème de cassis. black raspberries and star anise with hints of moss-covered bark. truffles and tilled loam plus a waft of red currants and raspberry leaves sparks. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is practically quivering with energy. offering glimpses at tightly wound black fruit and mineral/ferrous layers. framed by very firm. ripe tannins and wonderful tension. finishing long with the spices coming through. This will need a good 7-8 years to come round and then should cellar for 40+ years. Very serious. beautifully poised and sophisticated personality this vintage.

“There was a little more water stress in 2016 than in 2018.” Frédéric Faye mentioned. “The cooler nights here helped us to avoid too much water stress this year. We are not de-leafing a lot now—just on one side to expose the grapes to the morning sun. but we do not de-leaf on the afternoon sun side. where it can get very hot.” Figeac continues along its upward trajectory in terms of heights of greatness and consistency. Faye has adeptly managed to maintain the energy in the wines that is a signature of Figeac while revealing more layers. polishing the tannins and. ultimately. offering slightly more muscle to the fruit core. Once his considerable efforts in the vineyards really kick in and the new winery is completed. I am incredibly excited to see what the future holds for this historic. truly special place.

The 2016 Figeac is simply extraordinary. A wine of pure energy and vitality. the 2016 pulses with a real sense of drive. Lavender. mint. crème de cassis and cedar start to develop in the glass. but what is most remarkable about the 2016 is its total sense of harmony. There is natural tension. a sort of push and pull. between the wine's intense fruit and structural underpinnings that makes the 2016 a marvel to taste and contemplate. It was positively stunning in two separate tastings. Technical Director Frédéric Faye and his team made an epic Figeac in 2016.

Chateau Canon 2016 Saint Emilion

Composed of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc and aged for 18 months in 70% new French barriques. the 2016 Canon is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. and—WOW—it opens with the most stunning perfume of violets. red roses and kirsch. giving way to a core of black cherry preserves. chocolate box. licorice. warm plums and Chinese five spice plus an earthy waft of underbrush. Medium to full-bodied. the palate is completely filled with expressive. perfumed black berry layers accented by lively red fruits and exotic spices. supported by impressively fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension. finishing very long with jaw-dropping energy. Tasted three times. I had one opportunity to taste the 2015 and 2016 Canon side by side. While I love the bold. rich. seductive nature of the 2015. this 2016 kicks it up a notch in terms of polish. precision. depth and persistence. Most notably. the superbly ripe. exquisitely fine-grained tannins on this 2016 bring to the table a whole other level of sophistication. Bravo!

The 2016 Canon has the unenviable task of following the astonishing 2015. and it does a damn good job. even if it doesn’t reach the same ethereal heights. There is a pleasing strictness and poise on the nose; this is less immediate than the 2015. yet intellectual. a Canon that expresses its terroir rather than tons of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. a fine bead of acidity. a smooth texture and a slightly savory but persistent finish. which feels a little plusher than the 2015. implying that this might drink a little earlier. But there is unquestionably immense breeding locked into this rejuvenated Saint-Émilion. which is now firmly ensconced among the top-flight Right Banks.

Chateau Barde Haut 2016 Saint Emilion

Readers will find a rich. flamboyant wine in the 2016 Barde-Haut. There is not a ton of subtlety here. but I am not sure that matters all that much given how immensely pleasing the 2016 is. Crushed rocks. graphite. lavender. blackberry. plum. and violet infuse a Saint-Émilion that offers tremendous textural richness as well as vibrancy. Most importantly of all. the 2016 is flat-out delicious. This is a decidedly opulent. dark Saint-Émilion with all of the elements impeccably balanced. I loved it.
