A serious wall of blueberry and blackberry compote, and a ton of savoury Cabernet sinew and freshness. This is a great Montrose, inky, broad-shouldered and structured. It needs time to aerate and open in the glass, then you see the precision, the heft, the chiselling of the fruits with a ton of graphite, cigar box and campfire smoke - huge persistency. This will need a long time and will reward patience. One of the few where a 1986, 2016 and 2010 comparison makes sense. A yield around 30hl/ha. 1% Petit Verdot, 3.86pH, IPT 80. 45% of the overall production.

My notes started and ended with "wow," and this riveting Saint-Estèphe offers a heavenly bouquet of red and black currants, truffly earth, iron, espresso, and tobacco leaf. With incredible purity of fruit, full-bodied richness, and ultra-fine tannins, it's a deep, pure, layered 2020 that deserves at least 7-8 years of bottle age and will cruise for 40-50 years in cold cellars. Based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, the deep purple-hued 2020 Château Cos D'Estournel has, dare I say, an almost Lafite-like sense of elegance and class, offering gorgeous cassis and darker currants fruits as well as tobacco, lead pencil, acacia flowers, and graphite. Hitting 13.46 alcohol, with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT of 80, this flawless, full-bodied, incredibly elegant Saint-Estèphe has silky tannins, perfect balance, and a great, great finish. It will need a decade of cellaring to hit its prime drink window. Of the trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, it's clearly my favorite (that’s splitting hairs), with a similarity to the 2016, and will most likely merit another point at maturity.

Full-bodied, broad and low acid/high pH in style, it's rich and extracted, with a layered, mid-palate and a long, clove-inflected finish. While it isn't anywhere near as extreme as the 2009, the 2020 does appear to mark a move back toward a more turbo-charged style after Cos d'Estournel's shift toward elegance, exemplified by the brilliant 2016—but perhaps that's merely an illusion created by the vintage?

Another terrific Saint- Estèphe is the 2020 Château Capbern, which comes from the same team as Calon Ségur. (Current director Vincent Millet was brought on board in 2021.) Coming from 33 hectares of vines on sandy, gravelly, clay soils, the final blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The élevage spanned 18 months in 60% new French oak, and this beauty hit just 12.8% natural alcohol. Gorgeous cassis, violets, damp earth, iron, and classy oak all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with beautiful tannins, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, and the vintage's pure, focused, age-worthy style front and center. Give bottles just 4-6 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

Auch im jüngsten verfügbaren Jahrgang 2020 ist der Haut Tropchaud eine wirkliche Perle des Pomerol Plateau. Für mich unterscheidet sich der JG 2020 beim Haut Tropchaud vom 2019er Haut Tropchaud in seiner Intensität. Seine Frucht ist noch eine Nuance tiefer und schwarzbeeriger als beim verführerischen Vorgänger. Auch seine Tanninstruktur weisst eine kompaktere Struktur auf, alles in allem würde ich sagen, dass der JG 2020 bei Haut Tropchaud die bisherige Spitze des Schaffens ist. Den Wein verfolge ich nun schon über ein halbes Jahr, in gewissen Abständen nach seiner Ankunft im September 2022. Zunächst brauchte er mindestens 2 Tage um zu seiner gewohnten Tiefe und Leichtigkeit zu gelangen. Doch jetzt rückt alles immer mehr an den Rechten Platz, man hat fast das Gefühl der Haut Tropchaud 2020 hat Platz genommen um Sie auf eine Genussreise mitzunehmen die Sie für diesen unverschämt charmanten Preis in Pomerol kein zweites Mal erfahren werden.

Im Prinzip gilt die Verkostungsnotiz und Beschreibung des 2019er Haut Tropchaud auch für den 2020iger nur im direkten Vergleich mit einer Spur mehr halt....
Dunkles dichtes Rot mit violetten Reflexen, in der Nase Holunder, Johannisbeere, Kirschen in allen Schattierungen, aber auch Himbeere. Im Antrunk unglaublich präsent, hohe Dichte, die Säure ist perfekt eingebunden, alles wirkt sofort perfekt proportioniert. Aromatisch unglaublich präsent. Schwarzkirche, Johannisbeere und Brombeere, der Haut Tropchaud ist aber nicht überladen oder sperrig, man kann ihn kaum ausspucken. Die Umamiwürze zwingt einen förmlich zum trinken und das selbst in diesem Stadium der Fassprobe! Sofort geht einem ein Lächeln durchs Gesicht, der pure Hedonismus, dabei lang und mit der richtigen Portion Würze und Mineralik. Wieder wird diese extrem hohe Balance deutlich. Das Kaufmuss aus diesem Jahrgang, der archetypische Pomerol überhaupt. Unglaublich schön, balanciert und lecker und wieder lecker, so muss ein Pomerol sein! Pomerol ist Genuss ohne jegliche Reue, viel mehr als man das in den anderen Appellationen Bordeauxs finden kann. Wer großen Bordeaux trinken will und Spaß haben will ist beim Chateau Haut Tropchaud Pomerol genau richtig!

Der 2021 Château Clinet stammt aus einer 10 Hektar großen, mit Ton- und Kiesböden bepflanzten Lage mit 40 Jahre alten Reben. Eine Mischung aus 75 % Merlot und 25 % Cabernet Sauvignon (ein hoher Anteil für Pomerol) präsentiert sich in tiefem Purpur mit Aromen von Blaubeeren, Brombeeren, Veilchen und minzigen Kräutern. Mittel- bis vollmundig am Gaumen, zeigt er den frischen, eleganten Stil des Jahrgangs mit Tiefe, reifen, samtigen Tanninen, ohne harte Kanten, und einem großartigen Abgang. Ein beeindruckender Erfolg, der ab der Veröffentlichung genossen werden kann, aber auch 20 Jahre oder länger reifen wird.
