The 2018 Badette comes from the lieu-dit Badette in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine was aged in 50% new and 50% second year oak barrels for around 18 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it charges out of the gate with bold notions of stewed black plums, Christmas pudding and Black Forest cake, followed by hints of Chinese five spice, woodsmoke and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate has impressive freshness countering the densely packed black fruit preserves flavors, framed by ripe, rounded tannins, finishing on a lingering exotic spice note. The alcohol weighed in at 14% this year.

This estate continues to fire on all cylinders, and they're produced a beautiful 2018 Château Badette based on 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot aged 18 months in 50% new French oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by rock star notes of blueberries, cassis, candied violets, toasty oak, and graphite. Developing plenty of classic Saint-Emilion chalky minerality with time in the glass, it's medium to full-bodied and has an elegant, pretty texture, stays light on its feet, yet still has impressive concentration as well as building tannins. Buy a case, give bottles 2-4 years, and enjoy over the following decade or more.

The 2018 Badette is an exciting wine. Inky blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, licorice, spice, lavender and mocha all blast out of the glass. Unctuous and flamboyant to the core Badette is one of the more overt, opulent wines readers will find in Saint-Émilion and yet it has plenty of supporting vibrancy to play off its richness. All the elements come together so effortlessly. The blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

The 2019 Figeac has turned out brilliantly. Wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis, warm spices, violets and pencil shavings, framed by a deft touch of nicely integrated new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, powdery structuring tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Rich but vibrant, this 2019 reflects the new precision that Frédéric Faye has brought to Figeac; but while it's richer and more polished than the wines of yesteryear, the estate's identity hasn't been lost.

There is a bit more Cabernet Franc in this year's blend, and that definitely comes through. Readers who can find the 2019 should not hesitate, as it is truly majestic.

The 2019 Figeac was bottled in mid-July. Deep in color, with a bouquet that is initially backward and reticent. It requires a few minutes to shake off the veil of oak from the élevage. As I observed last year, the Cabernet Franc is very expressive this year, contributing blackberry and graphite notes and lending a more Left Bank-style bouquet. The palate is very fresh from the first moment, and very well structured, delivering layers of black fruit struck through by a fine bead of acidity. The tannins are very fine, and that crucial saline element appears toward the persistent finish. This is overtly classic in style and will require cellaring to reveal its full potential. The non-vintaged von Buhl Brut Réserve is a deliciously fine and fruity cuvée from 80% Pinot Blanc and 20% Chardonnay, from the 2013 and 2014 vintages, of which the 2013 was aged on the full less until December 2014. Only the first 50% of the pressing was used for the base wine that was fermented in 90% stainless steel and 10% in 2.400-liter barrels. Bottled in January 2015 and disgorged already in late October, this German Sekt offers a bright, fresh, pure and subtle yet deep and complex bouquet of white and red-skinned fruits, along with some brioche, potted ginger flavors and a dash of lemon-grapefruit juice. Full-bodied, round and intense on the palate, this is an almost rich, very fruity and powerful sparkling wine with a a creamy texture, as well as very good structure that balances the richness and power very well. This Blanc de Blancs is very promising, but shouldn't be consumed before end of 2016. It is provided with a very good length and is definitely fuller, slightly sweeter and more complex than the 2014 Riesling Brut. Really promising. 60.000 bottles produced.

Rufo Red 2019 aus dem Douro - Die Sensation unter 10€.

Das Aushängeschild dieses Weinguts ist der Vinha da Francisca Douro Red, aber auch schon der kleinste Wein im Portfolio ist sagenhaft gut für so verhältnismässig wenig Geld. Man kann es fast nicht glauben, bis man diesen Wein probiert hat. Rufo Douro red aus dem grossen Jahgang 2018 macht wirklich Freude. Wir würden soweit gehen und sagen, dass er als Weinwert unter 10€ einfach einen riesen Value darstellt. Intensive Aromen von Cassis, roten Früchten wie Himbeeren und Erdbeeren und auch blumige, spürbar violette Noten. Der Wein ist vollmundig, mit einer guten Frische, die einen langen und eleganten Abgang ermöglicht. Sein Ausbau erfolgte über 12 Monate im Holzfass.

Die Cuvee für den Rufo Douro red besteht aus folgenden Rebsorten: Touriga Franca und Touriga Nacional.

Bertram-Baltes Dernauer Spätburgunder 2021 Ahr

Der Dernauer Spätburgunder ist einer der zwei Ortsweine vom Weingut Bertram-Baltes, die Trauben stammen zum großen Teil aus den von Schiefer und Grauwacke geprägten Lagen Hardtberg und Pfarrwingert. Die Böden sind karger und die Dernauer Weine dadurch immer etwas strukturierter und kerniger. Nach der traditionellen offenen Maischegärung wird der Wein für 18 Monate in 600 Liter Fässern ausgebaut und unfiltriert und ungeschönt abgefüllt.

In der Nase beginnt der Dernauer reduktiv, deshalb am besten in ein großes Glas und karaffieren hilft auch, saftige rote Frucht kommt durch, eine Spur Kirsche, dazu leicht rauchige Nuancen, Johannisbeere, auch etwas Kräuter und kühle Eukalyptus. Am Gaumen mit engmaschigem Grip, eine bizelige Struktur kommt sofort durch, dazu saftige Säure und wieder frische Frucht, sehr lebendige, keinerlei Holz spürbar, das schmeckt nach purem Boden und die Struktur bleibt super haften und wird immer salziger und mürber, bleibt kühl und engmaschig haften.

Im März 2023 von Ulrich Sautter verkostet:

Reduktiv, aber auch floral, kirschig, im Mund kompakt, stoffig, mineralisch geprägt, mittelgewichtig, feinkörniges, sandiges Tannin in mittelhoher Menge, viel Saft im Hintergrund, reichhaltig auf unprätentiöse Art.
