Chateau Malartic Lagraviere

Die Domaine de Lagraviere war schon immer für die Qualität ihres Terroirs und ihre berühmten Kieselkuppen bekannt. Zu Ehren des Grafen Hippolyte de Malartic, Admiral im Dienste der Könige Frankreichs und Eigentümer des Weinguts im 18.JAhrhundert, wurde das Chateau auf Malartic-Lagraviere umbenannt. Ende 1996 kauften Michele und Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie das Gut und renovierten es vollständig. Damit waren alle Vorrausstzungen erfüllt, um Weine auf Augenhöhe mit demn besten Grands Crus von Bordeaux zu erzeugen. EIn Terroir und Weinberge von hoher Qualität, innovative und leistungsstarke Anlagen für traditionelle Vinifizierungsmethoden sowie ein engagiertes und passioniertes Team. Das in der ganzen Welt für seine kräftigen und zugleich feinen und eleganten Weine geschätze Chateau Malartic Lagraviere ist eines von nur sechs Weingütern im Bordelais, das sowohl für sien Rot- als auch für seine Weissweine klassifieziert ist.

Lavender. rose petal and mint add striking high-toned nuances to this finely cut wine. The 2016 has turned out beautifully. Most important of all. it is impressively delicious today.

The 2016 Malartic Lagraviere is blended of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon. 40% Merlot. 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color. it opens with wild blueberries and black cherries with cassis. bay leaves and dark chocolate nuances plus a hint of charcoal. Medium-bodied with a lively backbone and solid frame of ripe. rounded tannins. it finishes with an herbal lift.

I love the deep and complex nose. in which the cassis and mint of cabernet sauvignon are beautifully married to the more generous blackberry of ripe merlot and the vanilla and toasty notes from the oak are marvelously integrated. On the palate it creeps up on you slowly; the first impression is ripe yet delicate. then the fine-grained tannins charge through and light up the sky. Very long finish. Drink or hold.

Straight-up classic notes of honeyed pineapple, chalky minerality, minty herbs, and spicy nuances emerge from the 2020 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc, a deep, richly textured, medium to full-bodied white with nicely integrated acidity, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's one of the finest whites I've tasted from this château and is well worth seeking out. I like it today, yet it should have 10-12 years or more of prime drinking as well.

This will appeal to readers who appreciate Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blends.

This will drink very well for the next 15–20 years.

The 2015 Malartic Lagraviere has enjoyed a fine run of form in recent vintages. This is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot with smaller portions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It has a comparatively flamboyant bouquet for the appellation with scents of raspberry, crushed strawberry, cedar and a touch of graphite that lends it a Pauillac-like veneer. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, more black than red fruit infused with pencil lead and smoke. It fans out wonderfully toward the finish, completing a wonderful Malartic Lagravière that will age with panache.

This is in an especially dark, sumptuous style, but it all works beautifully. The 2015 was positively thrilling each of the three times I tasted it.

The deep purple-black 2020 Malartic Lagraviere leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of Bing cherries, black raspberries, ripe plums and boysenberries, plus suggestions of pencil lead, wild sage and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate has lovely energy and freshness, offering a solid backbone of grainy tannins to support the lively red and black fruit layers, finishing savory.The tentative blend is 50.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47.8% Merlot, and 1.8% Cabernet Franc, with only 38% of production going into the grand vin. The alcohol is 14% this year.Commencing with the 2020 vintage, the estate has chosen a new bottle for the grand cru and second vin, highlighted by an engraved ship, the symbol of the estate.

The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-tinged black fruit, hints of wild mint coming through, and lively and tensile toward the finish. This is one of the best vintages of Malartic Lagravière that I have encountered out of bottle. Ignore at your peril.
