The 2016 Lynch-Bages delivers on its promise from barrel with an intense blackberry. cedar and mineral-driven bouquet that actually reminds me of Lafite-Rothschild. A faint dark chocolate scent makes a brief appearance. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin. pure black fruit and a velvety texture. There is wonderful structure and focus on the finish. followed by a persistent saline aftertaste. This is an outstanding Lynch-Bages. easily the best since the twin titans of 1989 and 1990.

A stellar wine. the 2016 Lynch-Bages is dark and explosive in the glass. Beams of tannin and bright acids give the 2016 its sense of drive and tension. From bottle. the 2016 is quite a bit more powerful than it was from barrel. Dark flavors and potent tannins give the 2016 a distinctly brooding. somber feel. Sage. lavender. menthol. licorice and wild cherry are all laced into the potent. dramatically sweeping finish. Readers should not be in a rush. as the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so. it is super-impressive today.

Very rich and exotic with blackberry. black-tea. graphite and lead-pencil aromas. Full-bodied. dense and structured with lots of ripe tannins and a long. flavorful finish of currants and forest floor. combined with fresh mushrooms and bark. Needs four to five years to show its true potential. Try after 2024.

The 2016 Pichon Baron is seamless and racy from start to finish. Sensual and super-expressive. with soft contours. silky tannins and exceptional finesse. Pichon Baron is one of the more accessible wines in its peer group today. Plum. mocha. leather. spice and chocolate all build effortlessly. As outstanding as Pichon Baron is. the 2016 gives the impression it is playing things safe. It would be nice to see a little more daring and risk.

The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring. ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry. dark-cherry. mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar. as well as a slate-like. stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth. drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious. this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024.

The 2016 Pichon-Longueville Baron electrifies the olfactory sense with a stunning bouquet of intense blackberry. cedar and graphite aromas that are quintessential Pauillac. Over a few minutes. it blossoms in the glass. gaining more and more depth. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tarry black fruit. cedar and truffle. dovetailing into a saline. peppery finish that leaves the tongue tingling. Christian Seely and his team have imbued recent vintages of this Pauillac with unerring symmetry. and the 2016 can be added to the canon of triumphs.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, it unwinds in the glass with aromas of cherries, wild berries, rose petals, mint and subtle hints of licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, beautifully layered and vibrant palate that's deep, precise and penetrating, concluding with a mouthwateringly chalky finish. Extrem poliert und dennoch lebendig, mit faserigen, kreidigen Tanninen, die vibrieren, bevor sie sich in einem langen, fruchtgetränkten Abgang auflösen. Konzentriert, aber mühelos elegant. Der 2022 Troplong Mondot hat eine sehr komplexe Nase, die etwa zehn Minuten benötigt, um sich im Glas vollständig zu entfalten. Dann offenbaren sich pure schwarze Früchte, Graphit und Anklänge von Unterholz, was an einen Wein aus dem linken Ufer, ähnlich wie Figeac, erinnert. Am Gaumen ist er mittelkräftig, mit feinen Tanninen, präziser Frische und extremer Reinheit sowie einer schmeichelnden Textur. Die Spannung bleibt bis zum präzisen und zarten Abgang erhalten. Ein herausragender Troplong Mondot, der 3-4 Jahre Flaschenreife benötigt und nach zehn Jahren seinen Höhepunkt erreicht.

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, den 2022 Château Troplong Mondot zweimal zu verkosten, und er hat mich jedes Mal beeindruckt. Die Cuvée besteht aus 85 % Merlot, 13 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 2 % Cabernet Franc und wurde zu 55 % in neuem Holz ausgebaut, der Rest in einmal belegten Fässern und großen Holzfässern (Foudre). Dieser Wein ist ein unglaublich reiner, präziser und nahtloser Saint-Émilion, der lebendige Aromen von schwarzen Himbeeren und dunklen Kirschen, gepaart mit Graphit, Frühlingsblumen und feuchter Erde, zeigt. Mittel- bis vollmundig, vielschichtig und mit schöner Konzentration besticht der 2022er durch polierte Tannine, eine lebendige Säurestruktur und eine makellose Balance. Es ist der beste Jahrgang, den ich seit dem 2015er von diesem Château probiert habe.

The 2018 Rauzan-Ségla is composed of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The wine has 14% alcohol, and it was aged for around 18 months in barriques, 65% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes galloping out of the glass with powerful, energetic scents of crushed black cherries, blackcurrant cordial and mulberries, plus suggestions of violets, star anise, chocolate mint and crushed rocks with a touch of tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate is jam-packed with taut, muscular black fruit layers, supported by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with fantastic length and loads of earthy sparks. This is a thoroughbred Margaux, for sure, possessing amazing power in a very sleek, sophisticated package. Give it 5-7 years in bottle to unlock all those earth, floral and mineral nuances and drink it over the next 40 years or more. An incredible achievement that adeptly sidesteps the potentially overwhelming stamps of this extreme vintage. Bravo to Technical Director Nicolas Audebert and the team at Rauzan-Ségla!

I expect it will develop into a stunning Margaux in another 10-15 years or so. Actually, it already is.

Reminding me of the 2016, the 2018 Château Rauzan-Segla reveals this beautifully fresh, complex bouquet that still has serious richness and depth. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in 65% new barrels, it offers a dense purple hue to go with gorgeous notes of blackcurrants, spring flowers, cigar wrapper, and sandalwood. A quintessential Margaux with its spicy, complex, floral character, it's full-bodied and has a supple, elegant texture, no hard edges, a solid spine of acidity, and a great, great finish. This is a brilliant, heavenly 2018 to enjoy over the coming 30 years or more.
