Domaine de la Janasse

Domaine de la Janasse

In 1967, Aimé Sabon came back from his military service. He took over his father’s vines, who used to take his grapes to the wine cooperative. In 1973, Aimé built his own cellar. Domaine de la Janasse was born and named after the family farm that was in Courthézon, in the locality of “La Janasse”. Aimé was ambitious. He knew he had fabulous soil and he wanted to expand the estate by acquiring new plots. From 1
5 hectares at the very beginning, La Janasse has now reached more than 90 hectares.

From father to children

In 1991, after a technical diploma in viticulture and oenology in Beaune, and another one in marketing in Mâcon, Christophe Sabon –Aimé’s eldest son– came back to La Janasse where he
was given the keys to the cellar. From then different cuvees were developed, new markets conquered. In 2001, Isabelle –Aimé’s daughter– graduated as an oenologist from the University of Toulouse,
and joined the team. With Hélène, Aimé’s wife, the family was reunited again in La Janasse.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The terrific 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin has lived up to my expectations from last year's visit. It's 100% Grenache. includes some parcels planted back in 1912. and half was vinified with stems. From sandy sites. it showcases the ability of Grenache to ripen fully yet retain a sense of elegance and lightness. It's full-bodied and velvety but also vibrant. with black cherry fruit and hints of chocolate balanced by incredibly silky tannins and freshness on the finish. Really impressive stuff.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 29. August 2018:

This is a profound expression of grenache with brambly. red fruit wrapped in wild herbs and flowers. Fresh. yet deeply ripe and expressive. The really succulent. deep and fresh tannins are a feature. Power with elegance! Brilliant. Pure grenache on sandy soil. from three parcels of vines. aged between 80 and 100 years. Drink in 2020.

Bottled since May. the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is sourced from sandy soils. It's a blend of 40% Grenache Blanc from la Crau fermented and aged in concrete egg. 30% Clairette from Saintes Vièrges fermented and aged in demi-muid and barrique. and 30% Roussanne from la Janasse fermented in barrique. Notes of oranges and melon fill out the full-bodied palate. which is round but still admirably fresh and clean on the finish.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits more dark fruit than I would've expected. with black cherries. black olives and tar all mingling on the nose. In the mouth. the blend of 70% Grenache. 15% Mourvèdre. 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault is full-bodied. rich and velvety. with a lush. lingering finish. Easy to drink now. it should age for at least a decade just on its sheer concentration and ripeness.

Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape 2016Verkostungsbersicht vom 29. August 2018:

Very complex and deeply flavored with quite sappy. stalk influence. accentuating garrigue and floral elements. Some stony aromas. too. The palate has a polished. plush and assertive core of plump. ripe. red fruit and a long. plush. pastry-like tannin texture. Drink or hold.

A ripe and exotic style with plenty of wild herbs, ripe raspberry fruits and pastry notes. The palate has a little heat to it. This is at the limit of ripeness. Drink now.

Der JG 2019 ist noch nicht bewertet - der JG 2016 erhielt folgende Beschreibung:

There was only one 32-hectoliter foudre (now bottled) of the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues. an all-Grenache cuvée vinified with 50% whole clusters. It's floral and herbal on the nose. with bold flavors of blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and richly concentrated. it boasts supple tannins balanced by hints of brine and fresh acids. It's easily the equal of many Châteauneufs. and the price has crept up to reflect that.

Domaine de la Janasse VDP Terre de Bussiere 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 30. Oktober 2020:
2018 ist noch nicht bewertet der 2017 Jahrgang erhielt folgende Bewertung:
An interesting project that focuses on Merlot, the 2017 IGP Principaute d'Orange Terre de Bussiere is 60% Merlot, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. All but the Grenache mature in older barrels, while the Grenache stays in tank prior to blending and bottling. It's a bit leafy, but within acceptable bounds, delivering ripe black cherries and even a hint of cassis. Full-bodied and round in the mouth, it finishes with a flurry of softly dusty tannins and a hint of dark chocolate.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone rouge 2017Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:
Für den Jahrgang 2019 liegt noch keine Bewertung vor.

Bottled just a week before my visit. the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah. with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres. it's a juicy. mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied. it features a plump. appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties. the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Village Terre d'Argile 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Terre d'Argile is an equal-parts blend of Carignan. Grenache. Mourvèdre and Syrah. It's a full-bodied. silky-textured wine with bright acids that can rival many Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Dusty. earthy notes and dried spices accent cherry-berry fruit and then pick up classy hints of licorice on the lingering finish.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Village Terre d'Argile 2016Verkostungsbericht vom 29. August 2018:

Some poached strawberries. raspberries. dark fruit. garrigue herbs and iodine-like savoriness. The super-pure acidity and tannins are intertwined around ripe. fleshy blackberries. Coal smoke through the minerally finish. Drink or hold.

Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone blanc 2017Verkostungsbericht vom 31. August 2018:

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Blanc is a blend of Bourboulenc. Clairette. Grenache Blanc. Roussanne and Viognier. all made in stainless steel. It's medium to full-bodied and plump in feel. with fresh tangerine flavors that are remarkably clean. zesty and delicious. Drink it over the next couple of years.

Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon. Christophe wore his customary. irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match. and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest." he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power. finesse and acidity." Interestingly. the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines. which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading)
