Das Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere liegt, seit 1971 Eigentum der Grafen von Neipperg, liegt am Hang und am Hangfuß südlich des mittelalterlichen Dorfes Saint-Emilion und
besitzt ein Terroir aus besonders wärmeaufnahmefähigen Tonkalk und Tonsandböden. Dies führt zu einem für die Appellation atypischen Rebsortenbestand, der sich durch ein
fast perfektes Gleichgewichts zwischen Merlot und Cabernet auszeichnet. Die Harmonie aller natürlichen Parameter rund um den ökologischen Respekt des Terroirs
bringt rassige Weine von hoher qualitativer Beständigkeit hervor. Sie sind außergewöhnlich strukturiert und komplex, rein und elegant und spiegeln das kompromisslose Streben nach Perfektion wider, in dessen Zeichen ihre Erzeugung stand. 99 Just about pure perfection, the 2020 La Mondotte comes from a tiny parcel of limestone soils on the upper plateau, not far from Troplong Mondot. Mostly Merlot with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, its deep purple hue is followed by a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed stone, graphite, mulled black cherries, and hints of truffle. Full-bodied, incredibly elegant yet also concentrated and flawlessly balanced, it's as good as anything in the vintage. Give bottles 4-6 years in the cellar, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades.

The 2016 Canon La Gaffelière is just as striking from bottle as it was from barrel. Bright. intensely aromatic and precise. the 2016 has it all. Sweet red cherry. pomegranate. blood orange and rose petal all race through this silky. super-expressive Saint-Émilion. In 2016. Canon La Gaffelière is especially polished. refined and nuanced. which means also less overly powerful than in the past. It was compelling both times I tasted it from bottle.

The aromas are very complex with sweet tobacco. black truffles. blueberries and blackberries. Subtle. Menthol. too. Full-bodied yet so elegant. Structure with finesse and purity. The tannins are melted in the wine. Fabulous young wine. Try tasting it from 2023.

Bold but precise, this has a nice depth and density to the plush, ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit. Lovely sharp vein, mineral with bite and tang, slightly strict and tense on the one hand but soft, smooth, round and chewy on the other giving a push-pull of power and vibrancy. Clearly concentrated and powerful but holds interest and will age very well. Quite massy but I love the juicy core and raised acidity that gives it life. Mineral, salty, graphite and stony-laced tannins leave the lasting impression creating a moreish aftertaste. Fresh and finessed, but strong, broad and intense. Yield of 45hl/ha. 40% new oak barrels.

Quite possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, the 2020 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière offers that rare mix of richness and elegance that makes this vintage so compelling. Classic notes of cassis, ripe black cherries, spring flowers, and truffly earth define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with beautiful tannins and a great finish. This is another stunningly good Saint-Emilion that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and have 2-3 decades of overall longevity.
