Dog Point

Die Sauvignon Blanc Weine von Dog Point sind für uns die Sauvignon Referenz aus Neuseeland. Über die Geschichte der Vinery kann man auf der homepage von Dog Point Folgendes lesen:

"Dog Point is an area of Marlborough named by pioneering shepherds whose dogs either wandered off or became lost.

The name Dog Point dates back to the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district.  These were the days where, due to a lack of fences, boundary riders used boundary keeping dogs to protect the local flocks of sheep. Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off, eventually breeding to form a marauding pack that attacked the same flocks they were meant to be protecting. Eventually settlers were forced to cull the dogs and the area was named Dog Point. These dogs lived on the tussock and scrub covered southern hills of Dog Point Vineyards.  This landscape was, and still is, characterised by the iconic New Zealand native plant the Ti Kouka ‘cabbage’ tree which is also an established feature of the Dog Point property."

91 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc 2018Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski vom 29. März 2019:

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is on the tropical end of the spectrum, with hints of guava, pineapple and nectarine—a real fruit bowl. It's medium-bodied and silky in texture, with a long, flavorful finish.

This partnership between the Sutherland and Healy families shows no sign of growing old or complacent, except perhaps the graying and thinning hair around the table. The wines are as good as ever—maybe even better, as the vines settle into their productive middle years. Still, Ivan Sutherland said, "The last two [vintages] have been challenging." It's worth noting, however, that because of the lower yields they carry, they were able to pick largely before the rains. In 2018, said Sutherland, "The little botrytis that was there, we dropped out because we hand pick." As a final aside, I should point out that the wines age magnificently, as evidenced by the 2006 Section 94 reviewed this issue. We also tasted the 2011 Chardonnay and 2012 Pinot Noir, which were also in fine condition. As they were very close to where previous reviews put them, I haven't re-reviewed them.

November 2017:
Für den JG 2017

Pungent passion fruit and fragrant melon, Tahitian lime citrus, this really takes sauvignon to another place for Marlborough, exposing the edgy, exciting and minerally possibilities whilst embracing the rampant intensity of fruit. Great acid, mouth-watering from front to back. Drink now.

Verkostungsnotiz von Lisa Perrotti Brown am 30. Dezember 2016:
The 2014 Chardonnay reveals a pretty perfume of honey-drizzled white peaches, orange blossoms, marzipan and ginger with savory wafts of struck match (sulfides) and baking bread. Light to medium-bodied, taut and with a wicked backbone of racy acid, it gives a great intensity of citrus and savory flavors and great length.

93 Punkte bei Parker für den Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc 2015 MarlboroughJoe Czerwinski bewertet den Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon 2015 wie folgt:

Whole-bunch pressed and wild fermented in oak, the 2015 Section 94 is still in a bit of youthful funk. Hints of green onion and sweat appear on the nose, but the flavors are settling into a comfortable range of stone fruit, melon and pink grapefruit. It's medium to full-bodied, with a rich, almost creamy texture and a long, plush finish. Give it another year or two and drink it over the next 5-6.

96 Punkte James Suckling für den Dog Point Pinot Noir 2016Verkostungsnotiz von James Suckling:

Impressive structure and concentration. Terrific complexity in the mix here, too. Blueberries and mixed cherries on the nose and palate with a terrific layering of plush, assertive tannins and a fresh, vibrant kick into the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

91 Punkte Wine Advocate für den Dog Point Pinot Noir 2016Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski:

The 2016 Pinot Noir needs a year or two to come out of its shell. Subtle cinnamon and clove notes appear on the nose, along with black cherries and cola shadings. Medium to full-bodied, with a rich, velvety mid-palate, it finishes dry and firm.

95 Punkte James Suckling für den Dog Point Chardonnay 2016Verkostungsnotiz James Suckling vom 22. Januar 2019:

This is beautifully curated complexity, applied to very bright, powerful and concentrated chardonnay fruit. White peaches and grilled hazelnuts lead to a palate with a subtly creamy array of grilled-peach and hazelnut-praline flavors to close. Delicious. Drink now. Screw cap.

93 Punkte Wine Advocate für den Dog Point Chardonnay 2016Verkostungsnotiz von Joe Czerwinski vom 29. März 2019:

A blend of Mendoza and Clone 95, all wild-fermented in barrel with 15% new oak, the 2016 Chardonnay is a terrific effort. Struck flint and pencil shavings mark the nose, alongside toasted almonds, pineapple and melon notes. It's medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and long, citrusy finish. It should age up to a decade.
