Composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon. 32% Merlot. 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. yields for the grand vin in 2017 were 43 hectoliters per hectare. and it was aged in 60% new oak. It came in at an alcohol of 13% and an IPT of 68. Deep garnet-purple colored. the 2017 Cos d'Estournel needs a little coaxing to unfurl. revealing beautiful expressions of preserved plums. boysenberries. blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries with hints of Indian spices. menthol. lilacs and mossy tree bark plus a compelling suggestion of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied. the palate has a solid backbone of firm. grainy tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruits layers. finishing long and fragrant. This wine will need a good 5-7 years in bottle before it begins to blossom and should go on for at least another 40 years. I expect this wine to be a blockbuster of a head-turner when I come back and taste it at 10 years of age!

A bold. dramatic wine. the 2017 Cos d'Estournel is seriously impressive today. Time in barrel has done wonders for the 2017. a wine that has really gained depth in élevage. Black cherry. chocolate. spice. new leather. licorice. smoke and incense infuse the 2017 with tons of character. with the 60% new oak very well judged. In 2017. Cos has a level of textural resonance that eludes many Saint-Estèphes. The blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon. 32% Merlot. 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.

The 2017 Cos d’Estournel showed extremely well from barrel and likewise in bottle. continuing this estate’s strong run of form since the 2014 vintage. You instantaneously fall in love with the nose that bursts forth with blackberry. raspberry coulis. crushed stone. iodine and pressed iris petal. The 60% new oak is beautifully integrated. Quintessentially Cos d’Estournel. The palate is medium-bodied with supple black fruit laced with black truffle and graphite. quite Pauillac-like in style. which is no surprise given its location. This is very focused and perhaps understated compared to the 2016. yet its freshness and vivacity are undeniable. "Streamlined. cool and linear" I wrote at en primeur... I have no reason to alter that sentiment.

Tasted twice in Bordeaux in the early part of 2017, the 2014 Montrose replicated its showing at the property as part of the vertical in September 2016. It has that exquisite blackberry, cedar and blood orange scented nose that feels so effervescent even at this early stage. The palate is beautifully balanced with crisp, tensile black fruit, filigree tannin, perhaps in recent months developing a little more spiciness on the finish. It is just a beautiful, regal and complete Montrose that will give decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted February 2017.

Tasted at the château, the 2014 Montrose builds on the promise it showed in barrel with gorgeous blackberry, raspberry, cedar and orange sorbet scents that are extremely pure and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very precise acidity and layers of crisp black fruit laced with vanilla from the new oak at the moment. That will be subsumed in time. What you have here is a very precise, multi-layered, almost sensual Montrose that is going to delight many for years to come. This is highly recommended—one of the finest Left Bank wines this vintage. Tasted September 2016.

The 2018 Montrose is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a good amount of air to unlock the vibrant scents of crushed blackberries, preserved plums and cassis with suggestions of star anise, cedar chest, underbrush, Indian spices and iron ore, plus an emerging waft of violets. The full-bodied palate features the most exquisitely ripe tannins, offering a rock-solid backbone with tons of freshness lifting the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long and mineral laced. Going back to this wine over a period of hours and then days further reveals a Montrose of great opulence, richness and depth. Incidentally, the IPT level this year is 82, which indicates a very high level of tannins, and yet they are so, so ripe. The alcohol is around 14.5%. But sit back, close your eyes and forget the numbers—this is pure hedonism in its youth with a fantastic 40+ years of cellaring ahead of it, during the course of which do not be at all surprised if you are blown away by a three-digit experience.

The 2018 Montrose is dazzling. Whereas so many 2018s are opulent and broad, Montrose is a wine of vertical explosive power. Ripe Cabernet aromatics soar out of the glass, making a strong first impression. Black cherry, leather, licorice, graphite and menthol develop later as the 2018 starts to open in the glass. The energy, vibrancy and drive here are palpable right out of the gate. Montrose is one of real stars of 2018. Don't miss it!

A full-bodied powerhouse as well as a perfect wine, the 2018 Château Montrose is a final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length. It reminds me a little of a fresher version of the 2003, although there's more Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018 as well as less Merlot. It has that classic Montrose minerality and backward, mineral-laced style, yet I suspect this will be drinkable in just 5-6 years and should evolve into a modern-day legend from this terroir.

Chateau Montrose 2016 Saint Estephe

Unquestionably one of the top 2-3 wines of the vintage, the 2016 Château Montrose is a monument in the making. Checking in as a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc raised in 60% new French oak (the balance was in once-used barrels) and representing a tiny 36% of the production, this deep purple-colored 2016 possesses powerful, incredibly classic Saint-Estephe notes of creme de cassis, graphite, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and burning embers. With a powerful, full-bodied style on the palate, a huge mid-palate, lots of underlying structure and tannic grip, and perfect balance, this magical wine will need upwards of a decade or cellaring and keep for 40-50 years.

Deep garnet-purple in color. the 2016 Montrose is a little youthfully shy to begin. but with coaxing. it unfurls to reveal the most beguiling scents of wilted roses. oolong tea. crushed rocks. wild sage. star anise and candied violets over a wonderfully pristine. well-defined core of crushed blackcurrants. black raspberries and kirsch plus wafts of pencil lead and wood smoke. The taut. muscular. medium to full-bodied palate straddles jaw-dropping intensity and finesse superbly. featuring a solid backbone of ripe tannins and giving a firm frame right through the incredibly long. exquisitely nuanced finish.

This is a Montrose that will comfortably sit alongside the canon of great vintages from this Saint-Estèphe estate. As my score implies. it’s up there with the first growths. Stunning.

The floral and fresh aromas to this are mesmerizing. Roses and lilacs galore. The pure cab aromas coming from the glass – blackcurrants and blackberries – are so memorable. Full-bodied. deep and profound. The ultra-fine tannins on the palate are so polished and fine-grained. The finish goes on for minutes with subtle yet superb fruit. It’s all about precision and form here. A modern classic for Montrose. Better after 2026.

The 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. but it is clearly a very special wine in the making. In a word: dazzling.

Sporting a deep purple-black color, it needs a lot of swirling to begin to unlock a powerful nose of crème de cassis, stewed plums, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by nuances of Sichuan pepper, star anise, tree and clove oil, plus a waft of charcoal. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with taut, muscular black fruits and earthy layers, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully earthy. A very impressive behemoth, this is going to need a good seven to 10 years to truly show its stuff and should drink for a good 40 years and beyond.
