Castello di Ama vereint unter sich stolze 90 Hektar an Rebfläche, die sich rund um das antike Dorf Ama verteilen. Dank expressiver Weinbergslagen und langjähriger akribischer Analyse der Bodenstrukturen, des vorherrschenden Mesoklimas und der hiesigen Rebsorten hat das Team bei Castello di Ama ein unglaubliches Wissen und Kompetenz aufgebaut. Von all dem profitieren die Weine und ihr weltweites Renommee enorm. So wurde das Weingut vom Gambero Rosso 2005 als Weingut des Jahres gekürt. Nach dem Vorbild großer französischer Weine wurde auf Castello di Ama z.B. der erste Grand Cru des Chianti Classico geboren, der Vigneto Bellavista. Mit dem Kultwein L'Apparita, der zu den besten Merlots der Welt zählt und weiteren Erzeugnissen bauen die Winzer ihren herausragenden Status Jahr für Jahr weiter aus.

James Suckling beschreibt den 2018 L Apparita von Castello di Ama im July 2021 wie folgt:

Hard dark-chocolate aromas with blackberries and blue fruit. Pure and gorgeous. Full-bodied with gorgeous, polished tannins that are intense and powerful, yet ever so precise and together. It’s so curated and real with a great finish. One of the best merlots from Ama in a long time. Drink after 2024 and onwards.

This wine has earned its spot in a world of pantheons that is grande vini Italiani. The Castello di Ama 2018 L'Apparita is one of the world's greatest Merlots, and this slightly cooler growing season delivers on all the promise and pedigree that we should expect of this collectors' favorite. L'Apparita opens to an inky dark and blackish appearance, and the bouquet slowly reveals black fruit, ripe cherry, dark spice, smoke and barbecue rub. The wine's texture and finish, which is so velvety and rich, so supple and soft, is what will ultimately win you over. Indeed, this wine excels especially in terms of the elegance and fullness of the mouthfeel.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo draws its fruit from various sites selected throughout the estate, and for that reason, it is often the most representative wine from Castello di Ama (despite its more approachable price). This vintage is especially interesting, showing a more formal quality of tannins for longer aging potential and softly extracted dark fruit that sets it apart. Vintner Marco Pallanti likens 2019 to 2004 or 2016, some of the best vintages in recent memory. The wine is partially aged in new oak, and the percentage of new barrels used depends on the vintage conditions. This edition sees 20% new oak, medium toast and fine grains. The team is working with lower temperatures during fermentation with more numerous pump-overs for the first couple of weeks, then the wine is left alone. Fresh cherry fruit, blackberry, spice and grilled herb emerge. This is a production of 80,000 bottles.

Perfumed and beautiful with flowers, cherries and raspberries. Forest fruits, too. Full-bodied with extremely fine tannins that run the length of the wine and are wonderfully integrated, spreading across the palate. Lasts for minutes. Better after 2025, but already fantastic.

Leuchtendes, schimmerndes Rubinrot. In der Nase zunächst etwas verhalten, dann nach gerösteter Haselnuss, Waldbeeren, Unterholz, sowie feines Harz und Wachs. Am Gaumen geschliffen, mit feinmaschigem Tannin, dazu schöne süße Frucht, kommt ständig wieder, hallt lange und saftig nach.
