Bodegas Muga Reserva 2017 Rioja

The red 2017 Reserva, which is sold as Crianza in Spain, is their most popular wine, representing half of the total production of the firm. As is the norm here, it fermented in oak vats and matured in barrels, in this case for 24 months, crafted by their own coopers. The wine is fined with egg whites and kept in bottle for a further 12 months before it's released. I had the wine in the glass for a very long time, and it didn't stop improving; it started a little lactic and creamy, and then it got more and more serious. This is the only red they produced this vintage, so all the best grapes that normally go to other wines were used here; those selected grapes helped to keep the volume of this cuvée, and at the same time, it seems to have boosted the quality of this wine, which feels every bit as good as the 2016. It has a serious palate with fine, chalky tannins and very good balance. This is a textbook Muga red and a triumph over the conditions of the year, elegant and balanced, approachable now and with potential to age. In 2017, they produced 936,000 bottles of this wine.

94 Sucklingpunkte für denJames Suckling bewertet die Muga Reserva 2017 im Januar 2021 so:

Lovely, succulent red with juicy berries and plums, together with some chocolate, spice, walnut and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish. Touch of dried fruit in the center palate. A pretty combination of savory and fresh-fruit character. Some orange peel as well. A baby Prado Enea. Drink now.

Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint Emilion
94 Suckling Punkte für den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint EmilionJames Suckling über den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint Emilion:

Blackcurrant, cherry and violet aromas follow through to a medium to full body with very well-integrated tannins that give a soft and creamy impression. Long and satisfying already, but needs another three or four years to come together. Try after 2023.

94 Punkte vom Wine Advocate für den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint EmilionWilliam Kelley im April 2022:

A terrific effort from an estate that was long one of Saint-Émilion's sleeping giants, the 2019 Laroque unwinds in the glass with aromas of cherries, licorice, loamy soil, rose petals and sweet tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with succulent aids, powdery tannins and a seamless, integrated profile. It's well worth seeking out.

94 Punkte vom Falstaff für den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint EmilionPeter Moser im Februar 2022:

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Ockerrandaufhellung.

The 2019 Laroque captures all of the potential it showed as a young barrel sample. Succulent and racy to the core, with striking depth, Laroque is voluptuous, creamy and wonderfully inviting right out of the gate. Succulent dark cherry fruit, mocha, spice, new leather, licorice and menthol build into the voluptuous finish. Laroque balances fruit intensity with energy. It is certainly impressive in 2019. Tasted two times.

93 Punkte vom Vinous-Team für den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint EmilionUnd Neal Martoin (Vinous) zum Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint Emilion:

The 2019 Laroque has impressive transparency and focus on the nose, which is well-delineated and mineral-driven, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine grip, and lightly spiced with a touch of black pepper toward the finish. A superb Laroque from winemaker David Siure.

92 Punkte vom Wine Spectator für den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint EmilionFür den Wine Spectator verköstigte James Molesworth den Chateau Laroque 2019 Saint Emilion:

Still a touch reticent but it's all there, from the dark plum and warmed cassis notes to the underpinning of warm loam and sweet tobacco accents. Features fine-grained tannins, with good cut through the finish. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2035. 11,800 cases made, 1,840 cases imported.

Almaviva 2018 Valle de Maipo Rothschild und Concha y Toro
Almaviva 2018 Valle de Maipo Almaviva mit 98 Sucklingpunkte ausgezeichnetVerkostungsnotiz von James Suckling vom 5. April 2020:

This is such a beautifully nuanced red with tobacco. dried herbs. wet earth and currants. Some leather and rose petals. too. Full-bodied and chewy. yet refined with great polish. It’s rich and intense at the same time. Very focused center palate. Broad layers of tannin and fruit. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon. 19% carmenere. 6% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Better after 2024. but already a joy to taste.

Almaviva 2018 Valle de Maipo Almaviva mit 96 Punkten vom Wine AdvocateLuis Gutierrez am 31.08.2020:

My last Chile article questioned whether 2018 had been the best vintage of the last 20 years in the country. so I was very curious to taste the 2018 Almaviva. 2018 was a cooler year with more rain and a later budding and ripening of the grapes. especially in a cooler terroir close to the Andes. as is the case with Almaviva. The harvest was slow. as temperatures went down. further increasing the balance between freshness and ripeness of the grapes. The varietal breakdown is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. 19% Carmenère (from Peumo). 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. The grapes ripened thoroughly. as the 14.9% alcohol of the final blend shows. a little higher than previous years and with similar readings of acidity.

The wine feels quite complete and nicely crafted; they use all of their resources and technology to select the perfect grapes that ferment pristinely destemmed and crushed in stainless steel tanks at 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. mostly with selected yeasts. Malolactic was part in barrique and part in tank during the alcoholic fermentation. It matured for 18 months in French oak barrels. 73% of them new and the remaining 27% second use. It's a solid. well-built and seamless Almaviva. with clout and balance. 2018 was a more homogeneous vintage. globally considered one of the best in recent times in Chile. They identify a great vintage when they see more homogeneous quality in their different wines. and winemaker Michel Friou explained that this year some wines from three- or four-year-old vines were really good. It feels like a very complete wine. from a year when the seasons were marked and when the plant followed the development with almost textbook conditions—the grapes ripened thoroughly. developing more flavors and nuances while keeping the freshness.

This is still a baby. extremely young and creamy. but it is still approachable; there are no edges. but what's remarkable is the balance and stuffing and all the necessary ingredients for a great development in bottle. This is quite different from 2016; it's a vintage with power and clout. a wine that has fruit and intensity and is balanced. without the concentration and tannins of the 2017. It’s a more complete year that combines the finesse of 2016 with more thorough ripeness. The spicy and peppery character comes through with some time in the glass. 200.000 bottles produced. It was bottled during the last week of January 2020.
