Tasmania

Weinregion Tasmanien:

Tolpuddle 2015 Chardonnay by Shaw and Smith 97 Punkte SucklingAn extraordinary wine from one of the most perfect growing seasons, this has seen 100% malolactic fermentation, and the way in which the acidity is set into the wine is stunning. The nose has a good serving of toasty hazelnuts and spicy oak, but the bright grapefruit and white-peach fruits take centre stage. Flinty and complex. The palate is cast around a central core of intense, commanding acidity, while peach-custard and lemon-curd flavors hold super long. The acidity pins the finish in place. Stunning concentration and balance. Elegant and powerful. Drink on release in 2017 and for 5+ years.

James Halliday - 95 Punkte !

Hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed to French oak for fermentation and 9 months maturation with stirring before resting in tank. An elegant wine, quietly confident about its present and future. All the boxes have been ticked, leaving the stone fruit, pear and apple fruit to pick up citrussy/minerally acidity on the finish and aftertaste.

Tolpuddle 2016 Chardonnay by Shaw and SmithSuper refined and cool peach and grapefruit aromas with gently flinty minerally accents. The oak adds a smoky edge. The palate has powerful driving fruit with punchy acid presence and a super long, fine and mouthwatering core of citrus and just-ripe white stone fruits. Grilled hazelnuts to close. Superb chardonnay. Drink now.

96 Punkte James Halliday !
“A warm and drier than average season has resulted in richer and more intense flavours of stone fruit, ginger flower and preserved lemon. More complexity and depth from winemaking inputs such as whole-bunch pressed and fermentation in French oak with lees stirring throughout a 9 month period. Yet this never feels besieged, as the natural acidity glides across the palate reining everything in. A pleasure to drink."

95 Punkte Huon Hooke !
“Light, bright yellow colour with a piercingly fresh, lively lemon and grapefruit citrusy aroma, with some creamy yeast lees nuances. It has a terrific flavour, a lively energetic palate and zesty lemon sherbety qualities. The finish is long and the wine is refreshing and appetising. Excellent chardonnay.”

95 Punkte Wine Front !
“Great chardonnay. Fleshy with fruit, slung with acidity, flashed with flinty funk, and bitten by notes of grapefruit, wood spice and steel. Nashi pear and white peach flavours create the waves; spice and matchsticks add the glitter. It’s beautiful now, and it will take age in style.”

Tolpuddle 2016 Pinot Noir by Shaw and Smith

Verkostungsnotiz von James Suckling am Montag, 17. Juli 2017:

Tolpuddle 2016 Pinot Noir by Shaw and SmithA juicy pinot with lots of dried strawberry and lemon zest character. Medium to full body. Tangy. Easy now but better in 2017. Screw cap.

95 Punkte James Halliday !
“Hand-picked, whole berries and whole bunches open-fermented with gentle plunging. A wine that explains the love at fist sight when the Tolpuddle partners saw the vineyard. It comes flying through the weather of the vintage that trapped others with a highly perfumed red flower bouquet and into a layered palate reflecting the whole bunch/whole berry fermentation, spicy, savoury, foresty notes form a laurel wreath on the fruit, the oak integrated. And into the murky depths we travel. That lightness, that insistence, that riot of spice. It puts its cards on the table in take-it-or-leave-it fashion. It’s a wily, wiry wine, smoky and herbal, spun with tannin, fleshed with cranberry and red cherry, long through the finish. There’s a glimpse of jellied sweetness but blink and you miss it – before you know it, ash and dry twig notes have wrestled back control. This is an immensely cellarable style of pinot noir though, equally, it is an openly polarising one.”

93 Punkte Huon Hooke !
“Deepish red/purple colour with a spicy, slightly foresty bouquet with complexity and depth. The palate is soft and round, easy and harmonious, with soft fine tannins and lovely drinkability. Whole-bunch has been effectively, sensitively employed. Moderately long persistence; clean, slightly firm finish. Very good pinot.”
