Ridge Vineyards

Die Geschichte des Weinguts Ridge geht zurück bis zum Jahre 1885. Osea Perrone kaufte Land und baute das Landhaus, ließ den Keller in den angrenzenden Fels hauen, legte Terrassen in den Weinbergen an und 1892 wurde der erste Jahrgang veröffentlicht und vermarktet. Danach geriet das Weingut nach und nach in Vergessenheit, bis es in den 40er Jahren des 20sten Jahrhunderts wiederentdeckt und neu belebt wurde. Viele Flächen wurden von den neuen Besitzern mit Cabernet Sauvignon bepflanzt, so auch der spektakuläre Monte Bello. In den 60er Jahren wurde das Weingut um die Rebflächen in Lytton Springs erweitert, wo Zinfandel kultiviert wird. Merlot und Chardonnay, aber auch Rebsorten im Rhône-Stil runden das Portfolio ab. Gearbeitet wird bei Ridge Vineyards traditionell, man lässt der Natur weitestgehend freien Lauf, es sei denn ein Eingreifen wird zwingend nötig. Der Verzicht auf zu viel Technologie, das Alter der Reben und die Erfahrung aller Beteiligten macht die Weine von Ridge zu einem einzigartigen, komplexen Trinkerlebnis.

This blend of 74% zinfandel, 15% petite sirah, 9% carignane and 2% mataro has that signature Ridge freshness and definition with such reliable focus on fruit. Aromas of dried plums, dry roasted spices, red flowers and leaves lead to a palate that has such succulent, rich red berries and plums. So lively and attractive. Drink or hold.

Ridge's 2017 Lytton Springs opens up beautifully. with bright acids that drive a whole range of red/purplish fruit intermingled with floral notes. Creamy and ample in feel. the 2017 boasts superb balance and pedigree. Readers lucky enough to owe it should plan on cellaring it for at least a few years.

The 2017 Chardonnay Estate is soft. silky and exceptionally polished. White flowers. mint. orchard fruit. lemon confit and white pepper give the 2017 striking aromatic top notes that add nuance to the delicate. beautifully layered fruit. This understated Chardonnay is all class. The Estate represents 85% of Ridge's production in 2017. while the remaining 15% will be bottled as Monte Bello.

100% Chardonnay

A cold winter delayed bud-break. Late spring rain disrupted bloom. reducing yields by a quarter. Summer was warm at times. but mostly foggy and cool. This slowed ripening which produced greater flavor and firmer acidity. We picked nine parcels in early September. and barrel fermented each separately. The most elegant. that showed the finest fruit. were selected for this superb chardonnay. It can be enjoyed now.
