Dany und Michel Rolland ( wahrscheinlich der bedeutendste Weinberater seinerzeit), Erben einer Familienweintradition, erwarben 1986 einige Hektar in Saillans und gründeten Château Fontenil. Sie renovierten ihre Einrichtungen, darunter Weinkeller, Fasskeller und Lagerkeller, und verwendeten dabei nur hochwertige Materialien. Die Weinbereitung folgt traditionellen Methoden, einschließlich Pflügen, Begrasen und Arbeiten unter der Reihe. Die Südlage und die malerische Lage des Anwesens stärken den Ruf der Appellation Fronsac.

29 Nov, 2021 – Plenty of sweet-tobacco, graphite, and dark-berry aromas follow through to a medium to full body with attractive ripe fruit and chewy yet round tannins. It’s a little one-dimensional on the palate now, but will develop complexity and drinkability in a short time. Try after 2023.

The 2019 Château Fontenil is, I suspect, mostly Merlot, and it's another fine Fronsac in this vintage. Ripe black cherries, forest floor, Asian spices, and chocolate notes all emerge on the nose, and it's full-bodied, ripe, and sexy on the palate, with sweet tannins, no hard edges, and wonderful overall balance. It dishes out tons of pleasure and is a much more approachable, forward wine compared to the Le Défi de Fontenil while still possessing the class to evolve for 10-15 years.

The 2019 Fontenil has evolved nicely during its barrel maturation, developing more detail and precision on the nose of red fruit sous-bois and candied orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with supple tannins, fine structure and a silky-smooth, persistent finish. Superb.

Opaque purple-black in color, the 2020 Fontenil needs a little swirling and coaxing to release opulent scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote and chocolate-covered cherries, plus suggestions of candied violets, ground cloves and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate is rich with generous black and blue preserves layers, supported by beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

This is a fine Fontenil, albeit one that deserves 3–4 years in bottle.
