Angelus 2021 Die Nase ist klar und fein, nicht zu schwarzbeerig, die zart würzigen Aromen stützen den Wein sehr schön. Im Mund ist der Wein sehr schön präsent mit feiner Würze, etwas Moos und Rote Paprika, Holunder. Der Körper ist mittel bis kraftvoll und der Nachhall ist von guter Länge. 93-95

Trotzdem ist der JG 2021 bei Angelus ein besonderer, erstmals in der Historie liegt der Anteil des Cabernet Franc bei 60%, der Wein ist auch nun über einige Jahre hinweg in eine feinere und kühlere Stilistik gewechselt. Es wird sehr spannend sein zu sehen wie er sich gegen die Jahre 2018, 2019 und 2020 in Verkostungen schlägt, ich wäre nicht überrascht wenn er docht oft für das breiteste Grinsen sorgen würde. Hier schlummert einiges an Potenzial.

A brilliant wine that signposts this estate's evolution under Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the 2021 Angélus is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, with fully half of the old-vine Cabernet Franc maturing in foudres rather than 225-liter barriques. The result is a wine of unprecedented purity and finesse, unwinding in the glass with compelling aromas of plums, raspberries, rose petals, vine smoke, blood orange and warm spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate with a rich and fleshy core that entirely conceals its structuring chassis of ultra-refined tannins. Bright and sapid, it's striking for its integration and elegance at this early stage, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it upstage a number of more touted vintages once it's in bottle.

The nose takes a few swirls to find all the tobacco leaf, flowers, espresso, allspice, cloves, cinnamon, and red pit fruits. The wine is soft, silky and elegant. There is a freshness and refinement as well as a purity to the fruits on the medium-bodied palate that you also find in the finish, leaving you with black raspberries, strawberries, a hint of orange rind and red plums on the backend.

The wine blends 60% Cabernet Franc with 40% Merlot, representing the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend in the history of the estate. In the years to come, I hope they continue increasing the Cabernet Franc in the blend. 13.5% ABV, 3.65 pH. The yields were low at 26 hectoliters per hectare. Harvesting took place, September 14-October 2. Drink from 2025-2055. 94-96

This is very much focused on clarity of fruit, taut blueberry, richer raspberry puree, with waves of rose petals, saffran, iodine, smoked earth and bitter chocolate. Winemaker Pierre Seillan (who has just handed over to his son but is still very much a big presence) has been making wine at various locations since 1962, making this his 54th vintage, the 19th here at Lassegue. Harvest September 29 to October 14, 3.64ph. 70% new oak, no chaptilisaiton, no bleeding of the tanks for extra concentration.

A wine with pureness and finesse, showing wonderful length and brightness. Dark berries, cherries and dried citrus. It's long and lively. Orange peel and other citrus notes at the end. Lots of minerality.

Amazing aromatics - very fruit forward on the nose full of blackcurrant, black cherry and black pepper. The strawberry, raspberry and cranberry fruit absolutely sings in the glass, punchy with excellent clarity and soft plushness. Silky tannins, barely there except to give a mineral, wet stone texture which is to the fore. It’s profound in terms of depth of flavour - vertical and structured, but not heavy or exuberant with freshness and focus keeping it lifted and graceful. Well balanced, harmonious and full of classicism in the best sense. This is the 19th vintage for winemaker Pierre Seillan, whose son will now take the helm. No chaptalisation needed here. 3.64pH. Ageing in 70% new oak.

I continue to just love the whites from this family. Their 2021 Virginie De Valandraud Blanc checks in as 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, and while 2021 is an impressive vintage for the whites, it was slightly more challenging for Semillon, as it's more fragile with regard to frost and mildew. Crushed lime, chalky mineral, and more reductive yet clean, pure notes define the bouquet of this wine, and it's straight, focused, and chiseled on the palate, with good mid-palate depth. I think it's beautiful and will put on weight over the course of its élevage and have a long life.

Having tasted the 2021 Branaire-Ducru six times over the course of a month and a half, I feel confident in saying that it is a beautiful wine that numbers among the vintage's real successes. Offering up aromas of raspberry coulis and red cherries mingled with notions of rose petals, cigar box and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a layered core of fruit, lively acids and beautifully powdery tannins. Why is it quite so good? It isn't because a lot of wine was declassified, as around 60% of the estate's production went into the grand vin this year—a touch more than average. Rather, the key factors seem to be waiting to pick despite an alarming weather forecast; the blend itself, which emphasizes ripe Cabernet and the estate's later-ripening Merlot on clay-limestone soils; and the fact that a partially completed new winery means that Branaire already had fully 63 fermentation vats at its disposal to pick and vinify parcel by parcel. The exact composition is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Flowers and black raspberries with black and red currants open the wine in the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh, sweet, juicy and pure. Classic in style, this is going to be approchable early, so you will be able to enjoy all the ripe, elegant, cherries, plums and peppery currants without a long wait. Yet, the wine will age for 2 decades ore more easily. The wine is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc and 5.5% Petit Verdot, 13% ABV, 3.68 pH. The harvest took place September 24, finishing October 14. The yields were low at 32 hectoliters per hectare and from there, roughly 60% of the harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. Drink from 2024-2050.

Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's a charming, fleshy wine with lively acids and fine length on the finish. It's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and fully 7% Petit Verdot—the latter having, in fact, been co-planted among Cabernet in some of the estate's older vine holdings, but only formally identified as such now.

I loved the 2021 Château Saint-Pierre, a medium-bodied, fresh, focused, yet still concentrated and textured Saint-Julien. Based on a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot representing a selection of 70% of the total production, it offers plenty of red and black fruits, notes of tobacco and crushed stone, terrific purity of fruit, and just a beautiful sense of elegance and finesse. The balance is spot on, and it's going to offer pleasure right out of the gate yet should also evolve gracefully.

A terrific success, the 2021 Léoville Barton unwinds in the glass with aromas of blackcurrant, wild berries and plums mingled with hints of pencil shavings, loamy soil and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's concentrated and tensile, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and all the class that an elevated percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon growing in deep gravel can provide. It's the first vintage vinified in the Barton family's new winery, and I suspect that contributes to the ultra-refined quality of tannin this year. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times.
