Weinregion Valdeorras:

Gaba do Xil red Mencia 2013 Valdeorras
als 2012er
89 Parker Punkte

An entry-level, un-oaked red, the 2012 Gaba do Xil Mencía is sourced from old vineyards on granite soils at 550 meters altitude that has other grapes intermixed as it was the norm in the old times. It was fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The nose shows a mixture of wild berries and aromatic herbs which is very attractive and typical. The palate is medium-bodied with moderate acidity, clean and intense, quite straightforward. The nose improves quite a lot with time in the glass, so I'd recommend to open and decant the bottle in advance. The 40,000 bottles.

Telmo Rodríguez surprised me last time round with an indigenous and charismatic red from Valdeorras. This time he showed me a couple new wines from this appellation in Galicia. They work on the banks of the Bibei river with a combination of old vines and recovering old forgotten sites that they are replanting, like the Capilla de la Falcoeira, from where they have produced a first single-vineyard red with the grapes from very young vines that are struggling to survive in those poor soils.
