Bordeaux

Weinregion Bordeaux:

In zahlreichen Verkostungen,

Chateau Le Sartre 2014 Pessac Leognan rouge
88-90 Parker Punkte
Neal Martin April 2015 Fassprobe:
The Château Le Sartre 2014 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. It has a slightly conservative nose, nicely focused with tertiary black fruit and smoky tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, satisfactory red and black fruit with a touch of graphite on the anachronistic but refined finish. You could describe this Graves as a bit old-fashioned, but it comes across as an honest and satisfying wine in the making.

Chateau Sociando Mallet 2010 Haut Medoc
91+ Parker Punkte
Robert Parker März 2013:
A very classic wine for patient connoisseurs, Sociando Mallet makes no compromises and continues to produce one of the finest wines among non-classified estates in Haut-Medoc. Dense purple to the rim, the opaque purple-colored 2010 offers up notes of graphite, blueberry and black raspberry fruit, a hint of cassis, some licorice and wet rocks. Deep, full-bodied and almost excruciatingly tannic, this full-throttle, balls-to-the-wall style of wine needs at least 8-10 years of cellaring and should keep for three decades or more.

This is consistently one of the most seductive wines made in Bordeaux and it sells for well under $25 a bottle. The 2010 is an excellent wine with classic tobacco leaf, black currant and black cherry notes intermixed with loamy soil and forest floor as well as hints of licorice. With supple texture and a plush, opulent finish, this is a beauty to drink over the next decade.

Robert Parker April 2015
Once again proprietor Jean Gautreau has hit pay dirt with a beautiful blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Wonderfully sweet, ripe tannins seem to be a rule of thumb from this great terroir just to the north of St.-Estèphe’s Château Montrose. A beautiful deep ruby/purple color, decent acidity, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning fruit put this wine right in the midst of the best classified crus from the Médoc, yet it has never been classified. Go figure. Softer than I would have suspected (and I’ve been following and buying this wine since the mid-1970s), this wine will still age beautifully for 10-15+ years.

17/20 Weinwisser

April 2016:
A fresh and beautiful wine now with sliced pear and apple aromas and flavors. Lively acidity.

Currant color. Bright, radiant and ... attractive. The nose is very fresh: red berry slightly spicy.
On the palate, fine flesh and freshness with an intense sweet and fruity taste. Long and complex finish: the sign of great terroirs.
Flavor and delight. 2016-2018. Drink 10°

70% Cabernet Sauvignon ; 30 % Merlot

Domaine de Chevalier has been producing a tiny quantity of “Rosé wine” for around 20 years, using the method called “rosé de saignée”: no maceration, and the juice is fermented separately. It is mainly made from cabernet sauvignon by Olivier Bernard and his team. For this lovely rosé wine, he chose a very aesthetic white glass bottle from the best glass bottle producer of France. A very pretty label gives more elegance and modernity.Packaging is superb. On his rosé, he favors a beautiful bright and intense color, with fruity aromas, freshness, delicacy and finesse in the final.

96 Parker Punkte
April 2014 Robert M. Parker Jr. bewertet den Chateau Pape Clement 2011 wie folgt:

The 2011 Pape Clement, a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, was aged 18 months in new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Absolutely profound, with a complex bouquet of mulberries, black cherries, black currants, graphite and subtle smoke and burning ember-like aromas, this is a true super-star of the vintage. It represents a remarkable achievement by the winemaking team of Bernard Magrez. Full-bodied, rich and multidimensional, this wine clearly transcends the entire vintage. It should age effortlessly for 25 years.

Flaschenbewertung des Chateau Pape Clement 2012 rouge von Robert M. Parker Jr. April 2015
The 2012 Pape Clement is one of the stars of the vintage, which is not surprising given this estate's performances over the last 10-15 years. A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color along with a beautifully sweet, graphite-scented nose with hints of black currants, Asian plum sauce, soy and forest floor. Impressively built with medium to full-bodied flavors, it has more layers than many wines from this vintage, an appealing density and a velvety texture.

18/20 Weinwisser
Mehrere Male verkostet.

Robert M. Parker Jr. April 2015

I am not sure what the exact blend is for the 2012 Pape Clément, but it has a light gold color and is a gorgeously full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine with great texture in its notes of rose petal, honeysuckle, crystallized/caramelized tropical fruits, mandarin orange and honeyed lemon. Aged 15 months in mostly new French oak, this is another brilliant achievement for proprietor Bernard Magrez from this tiny white wine vineyard, although I would rate it slightly below his perfect 2009. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2012 rouge
97 Parker Punkte
Robert M. Parker Jr. April 2015

As for the 2012 La Mission Haut Brion, this wine (41% of the total production) continues to perform as it has for nearly a century. At first-growth levels of quality, this is s stunning wine that is full-bodied and very concentrated with notes of graphite, subtle charcoal embers, crème de cassis, blackberry and underlying subtle earthiness. The wine is full and powerful, rich and concentrated. And sure enough, the alcohol level tips the scales at 15% from a blend 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. This is a big, blockbuster La Mission Haut Brion that should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. However, the tannins suggest that this wine should not be touched for another 5-6 years, as its one of the more backward of the 2012 Pessac-Léognans. Bravo !

One of the best Talbots over recent years, and possibly the best since the 1986 and 1982, this sexy juggernaut of a wine struts forth with an opaque plum/ruby/purple color and terrific notes of creme de cassis, licorice, roasted herbs and smoky barbecue. Chateau La Vieille Cure 2014 Fronsac
86 Parker Punkte
Neal Martin März 2017:

The 2014 La Vieille Cure felt very backward on the nose, broody and masculine, and lacking the fruit of say the 2014 La Dauphine that I tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin. It feels dense and masculine, a little gritty in the mouth with the oak not sewn into the fabric of the wine as well as it should. There are better Fronsac wines out there this vintage, but it is the kind of Fronsac you would happily pop open during the week.

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2010 Saint Julien Cru Classe
Auf Lager - limitierte Mengen !!!

98+ Parker Punkte

With loads of minerality, a terrific opaque purple color, and slightly more structure and tannin than either Poyferre or St.-Pierre (and that’s saying something), this is a blockbuster, fabulous Ducru Beaucaillou that should be at its best a good decade from now and last 40-50 years. The proprietor is not alone in thinking this is the finest Ducru Beaucaillou since the 1961. The classic wet rock, creme de cassis, subtle oak and gravelly stoniness of the vineyard come through in this spectacular, full-bodied, gorgeously pure and intense effort. This is wine for the ages that should be forgotten for at least a decade.

Proprietor Bruno Borie thinks this wine is as superb as their 2009. Slightly more structured and less flamboyant than its older sibling, it is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from the very best parcels of the vineyard. This wine tips the scales at 14% natural alcohol but has a normal pH of 3.6, which is one of the characteristics of this vintage (high alcohol, normal pH), which thus accounts for the freshness and precision found in most 2010s.

100 Punkte James Suckling

The nose is phenomenal with perfect aromas of Cabernet Sauvignon with currant bush, blackberries and minerals. A pure expression of Cab. The palate is perfect with a full body, but has perfectly integrated tannins with a texture like the finest cashmere. It's strong but noble with perfect form and beauty. All in harmony. A fabulous wine that everyone who loves Bordeaux should have a bottle or case of. Better in 2020.

Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2010 Staint Julien
98+ Parker Punkte
Robert Parker bewertet den Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2010 wie folgt:
The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years.

Another spectacular wine from the Cuvelier family, Leoville Poyferre (along with Ducru Beaucaillou) may be one of the two best wines of St.-Julien year after year these days. This is a large estate, covering nearly 200 acres, and the final blend of the 2010 Leoville Poyferre is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, a whopping 34% Merlot and the rest 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

Neal Martin März 2017:

The 2014 Citran has an attractive bouquet with hints of espresso complementing the black fruit. I appreciate the energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good weight in the mouth and well judged acidity lending tension from start to finish. Citran can often make very attractive Bordeaux, and their 2014 is one of them. Nothing spectacular, just good trustworthy Claret. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The smoky redcurrant nose here leads into a surprisingly concentrated, supple, mid-weight palate with moderately dry tannins and nice harmony. Why wait?

Neal Martin 28 Oktober 2016:
The 2014 Senejac has a withdrawn but well defined bouquet with more undergrowth aromas than many of its peers, unreservedly classic in style (and there is nothing wrong with that). The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe blackberry and boysenberry on the entry, a slight tinniness on the back palate with a very tightly wound finish. This clearly needs 4-5 years in bottle but it has the matière to repay those with patience. Tasted September 2016.

The 2014 Peyrabon has a ripe blueberry and creme de cassis-scented bouquet that has a touch of volatility. The palate is sweet and lush on the entry with plenty of black cherry and blueberry fruit, belying what feels like a firm structure underneath and renders the finish drier and more classic than expected. There is a lot going on here and I suspect it will age with style. Tasted September 2016.

Neal Martin April 2015 Fassprobe:
The Château Peyrabon 2014 offers a broody, dark berry and tea-leaf bouquet that feels a little rustic vis-a-vis its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, cedar-tinged entry. Chateau Sociando Mallet 2014 Haut Medoc

The 2014 Charmail has a well-defined, quite minerally bouquet with blackberry and briary aromas, one of the more precise Haut-Médoc 2014s that I have tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fine definition and superb backbone. This is vivacious, focused and delivers great typicité -- all in all a great contribution to the vintage from this estate. Excellent! Tasted September 2016.

Neal Martin April 2015 Fassprobe:
The Château Charmail 2014 is a blend of 38% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc with 11% Petit Verdot cropped at 40 hectoliters per hectare from vines located across the road from Sociando-Mallet. It is matured in 25% new oak barrels. This has plenty of strapping black fruit on the nose that is clean and pure. The palate is smooth and rounded, supple in the mouth with good acidity on the refined, generous finish. This is one of the best Haut-Médoc wines that I tasted and it should represent great bang for bucks. 89-91 Punkte

One of the best second wines, and possibly the best since the 1990 is the 2010 La Dame de Montrose. This represents 36% of the production and is a blend of two grapes – 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot. A superb second wine, opulent and substantively textured, it shares more in common with a flamboyant, exuberant year such as 2009 than most 2010s. Dense purple, its oodles of fruit, luxurious mouthfeel and terrific finish make it a sleeper of the vintage. It’s a wine to buy in abundant quantities and drink over the next 10-15+ years.

Chateau Montrose 2009 Saint Estephe

100 Parker Punkte
Robert Parker bewertet den Chateau Montrose 2009 im Feb. 2012 Ausgabe 199:
A colossal effort, the 2009 Montrose represents a hypothetical blend of the monumental duo of 1989 and 1990 combined with the phenomenal 2003. With 13.7% alcohol (an all-time high at Montrose), it is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Some structure and minerality can be detected in the background, but the overall impression is one of massive blackberry, black currant and mulberry fruit intermixed with forest floor, damp earth, crushed rocks and a hint of spring flowers. Full-bodied with sweet but abundant tannin, Jean-Bernard Delmas believes this is the greatest wine he has made during his short tenure at Montrose since retiring from Haut-Brion. This wine will undoubtedly shut down for a decade, then unleash its power, glory and potential perfection. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050+.

Robert Parker Mai 2011

One of the superstars of the vintage, this classic Montrose is not as showy or opulent as the 2010, 2009 or 2003, but it offers a dense purple color followed by gorgeously sweet black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with loamy, earthy, forest floor notes, a floral component and a long, full-bodied finish. The 2008 was fashioned from yields of 44 hectoliters per hectare which is slightly less than the 2010's 45 hectoliters per hectare. Forget it for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 20+.

Flaschenbewertung Februar 2015
The 2012 Montrose (57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot), is rich, broad, and dense ruby/purple, with substantial tannins still to shed. It is a rather masculine, medium to full-bodied Montrose, with cassis, crushed rock and spice. This wine will need bottle age because of the tannin profile, should hit its prime in another 7-8 years, and last for another 20-25. This is another wine with the alcohol pushing an impressive 14% and a finished pH of 3.7 – two characteristics of a very ripe, high-quality vintage.

Only 52% of the production made it into the 2012 Montrose, a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon (harvested between October 13 and 20), 37% Merlot (picked during the third week of September) and a tiny amount of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The pH was 3.7 and I suspect the alcohol level pushes 14%. It is one of the top successes of the vintage. As new administrator Herve Berland indicated, the severe six-week drought caused the Cabernet skins to become very thick, thus resisting the huge rainfall that fell between October 7 and 9. The late harvest dates suggest very ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, which appears to be exactly what has occurred.

Februar 2009 Robert M. Parker Jr.

The first vintage under new owner Martin Bouygues, who convinced Jean-Bernard Delmas to come out of retirement to produce this wine, the 2006 Montrose is an undeniable success. A blend of approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, one-third Merlot, and a tiny dollop of Petit Verdot, the most dramatic difference between the 2006, and wines made by the previous administration is that Jean Delmas produces wines with sweeter, silkier tannins, although analytically, they are as high as those found in the great Montrose vintages of the past. The 2006 is extraordinarily elegant and finesse-styled, but it exhibits stunningly concentrated, sweet blackberry and cassis fruit with hints of flowers and minerals. Full-bodied with a savory, expansive mid-palate as well as sweet, noble tannins, this beauty will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 20-25+ years.

Earthy and tannic, but concentrated with firm structure, the 2012 La Dame de Montrose has a distinct spicy, earthy character and some tannins to shed, which is unusual for a second wine. It is nicely concentrated with a dense ruby/purple color, and overall it is well-made. With stunning richness, this blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot exhibits lots of blueberry, boysenberry and mulberry notes, a full-bodied, voluptuously textured mouthfeel and terrific purity and length. The 2014 Fonreaud has a tightly wound bouquet with well defined red berry fruit mixed with cedar and tobacco, although it needs a couple of years to fully unwind. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well judged acidity. This lacquers the mouth with tannin, though it does not feel overbearing and it has plenty of stuffing on the finish. Give this some bottle age and you'll have a great Cru Bourgeois/Listrac. Tasted September 2016.

The grapes were picked late, with the harvest finishing on October 22, and that has given the wine wonderful ripeness and plenty of chocolaty espresso notes intermixed with incense, black cherries and black currants. The oak is subtle, and the wine full-bodied, attractive, deep, round and generous. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

This significant estate in St.-Emilion, with one of the biggest, if not the largest, vineyards in Bordeaux, has produced a wine composed of 80% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Neal Martin März 2017:
The 2014 Croix Mouton offers creme de cassis, boysenberry jam and a hint of bell pepper on the nose. It is upfront and quite bold for the vintage, typical for the estate. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, full of blackberry and cassis fruit, a pleasant fleshiness towards the glossy finish. For certain this is, as always, unapologetically modern in style, but this is balanced and powerful.

Robert M. Parker, jr. March 2015

Another wine made by the superstar guru Nicolas Thienpont, this well-situated property of 37 acres on the high clay/limestone plateau in St.-Emilion has produced a blend of 84 % Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. A masculine, virile style of wine with an inky deep purple color, lots of crème de cassis and crushed rock and high tannin. This is thick and powerful, with a layered mouthfeel, good purity, earthiness and spice. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink if over the following two decades.

Chateau Pontet Canet 2010 Pauillac Magnum 1,5 Liter

100 Parker Punkte

An absolutely amazing wine, from grapes harvested between the end of September and October 17, this blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot has close to 15% natural alcohol. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of cellaring, and that’s assuming it doesn’t close down over the next few years. This is a 50- to 75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so most compulsive and obsessive proprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! Pontet-Canet’s 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009. Kudos to Pontet-Canet !

Chateau Duhart Milon 2010 Pauillac
96 Parker Punkte
Robert Parker bewertet den Chateau Duhart Milon 2010 im Feb. 2013:

Dense purple, with classic notes of cedar and lead pencil shavings as well as gobs of back currants and licorice, the wine has a full-bodied mouthfeel with fabulous precision and density. It also possesses a long, silky finish with moderately high tannins, but they are ripe and well-integrated. The wood is clearly pushed to the background in this dense, full-bodied Pauillac, which should drink beautifully for 30+ years.

If you can’t afford Lafite-Rothschild (few can)or even their second wine, Carruades de Lafite, you still have Duhart Milon, which has become a profound wine over the last 5-7 years due to the extensive amount of attention and investment the Rothschilds have pumped into this estate. This blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot is fabulous, a dead ringer for Lafite in a great vintage. (It is probably better than many of the Lafites of the 1960s and 1970s, and even some of the vintages in the 1980s.)

Lacoste Borie 2014 2.

Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2009 Pauillac
98 Parker Punkte

Robert M. Parker Jr. Feb. 2012

Revealing incredible quality and performing better than it did from barrel, the 2009 appears to be the greatest Pichon Longueville Baron since the 1990 and 1989. An amazing opaque blue/purple color is followed by scents of spring flowers, graphite, smoky charcoal, incense, blackberries, blueberries and hints of coffee and chocolate. Incredibly intense, pure and flawlessly constructed with extravagant layers of fruit and richness, this offering has developed beautifully under the management of Christian Seeley. It is a voluptuous, opulent Pichon Longueville Baron that may eclipse anything they have made in the past. This brilliant wine should be at its peak between 2018 and 2045.

"65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 35 % Merlot. Sattes Purpur-Granat.

Chateau Troplong Mondot 2010 1er Grand Cru Classe St. Emilion
99 Parker Punkte
Inky, bluish/black/purple, with notes of spring flowers, licorice, camphor, graphite, and a boatload of blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry fruit, this is a powerful, full-bodied Troplong Mondot. All the building components of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol are judiciously and impressively integrated. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc made by Christine Valette and her husband Xavier Pariente with the consultancy help of Michel Rolland. I-m not sure what the heady alcohol level is in Troplong Mondot in 2010 (it certainly must be in the 15%+ range), but it is well-concealed behind the extravagant, richness, full-bodied power, and pure nobility of this majestic wine. Forget this for 5-7 years and drink it over the following three decades.

An absolutely stunning wine from this estate, which seems to be on a mission to produce exquisite world-class wines with enormous aging potential, the 2010 is showing better from bottle than it even did from barrel.

Flaschenbewertung Robert M.Parker Jr. April 2015

The 2012 is another truly great wine from Troplong Mondot. It’s always sentimental to taste this wine, realizing that proprietress Christine Valette (the larger-than-life heart and soul behind this estate) has passed away. She was one of the bright, shining stars of Bordeaux. Nevertheless, her legacy is certainly well-established, and the quality of this wine is beyond reproach. Inky bluish purple, its great notes of cassis, blackberry, licorice are followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured wine with stunning concentration, purity and overall balance. It should drink well for 20-25 years and turn out to be one of the great superstars of 2012. Their 63-acre vineyard was cropped at 31 hectoliters per hectare, producing a final blend of 90% Merlot and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 14.2% alcohol.

From a 63-acre vineyard on the high plateau (called the Plateau of Mondot) adjacent to the famous limestone hillside, the Cote Pavie, the 2012 Troplong Mondot is another fabulous success. Cropped at 31 hectoliters per hectare with malolactic in barrel, this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon hit 14.2% natural alcohol. Robert M. Parker Jr. - Mai 2011:

A wine of the vintage candidate in 2008, Troplong Mondot’s offering was produced from yields of 41 hectoliters per hectare and achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. A classic blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it offers copious quantities of blue and black fruits, a full-bodied opulence, sweet tannin and a fabulous texture as well as finish. Already drinking beautifully, it will be even better in 2-5 years and should last for 20 years. A great effort for the vintage, it couldn’t happen to a more deserving proprietor, Christine Valette. The 2014 Deyrem Valentin has a lifted raspberry coulis, strawberry and violet-scented bouquet that feels just a little pinched at the moment. Robert M. Parker Jr. Februar 2013

Gorgeous, flowery, classic Margaux once again, the 2010 Malescot St.-Exupery continues to show virtually no toasty oak, given the impeccable balance and full-bodied, full-throttle style it possesses. Black raspberries, creme de cassis and spring floral notes intermixed with forest floor and a hint of charcoal are followed by an opulent, sexy, full-bodied wine whose tannins have become much sweeter, while the wine is less restrained yet still exuberant and impressive. This is a phenomenal example once again for this estate, harmonious in every sense of style, extraordinarily long, rich and ageworthy. Three to four years of bottle age will do wonders to make it more accessible, but this wine is set for 25-30 years of longevity.

Having just had the 2003 and 2005 from my cellar, I can attest to the magnificent turnaround in quality this famous estate on the eastern side of St.-Emilion has achieved. All of it is attributable to its dynamic proprietor, Philippe Cuvelier. The 2014 Leoville Barton is one of the must-buys of the vintage. Now in bottle, it has a very pure bouquet that gains intensity in the glass, laden with blackberry and raspberry coulis scents, cold wet stone, a wonderful mineralité that becomes more conspicuous with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin, a fine line of acidity that lends this precision and nervosité. There is class and sophistication in situ, not a powerful Léoville Barton, but beautifully poised. This is just a brilliant forerunner to the 2015 and it should represent great value.

There is 6.8% vin de presse this year. Picked between 30 September and 13 October over 12 days. It has a delectable bouquet with very precise, mineral-rich black fruit infused with oyster shell, which appears to be a leitmotif of Jean-Huber Delon's 2014s! The palate is medium-bodied with wondrous purity and tension, the acidity beautifully poised and imparting the palpable sense of energy from start to finish. The 2014 Lalande-Borie is one of those wines you want to give a gentle kick up the backside. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this Saint Julien, but it seems to be coasting, not putting in the effort to please you or I. It offers light leafy, brambly red berry fruit on the nose, nicely defined but missing a little intensity. Likewise the palate is balanced and quite elegant, yet I was seeking more body and greater sense of energy on the finish. As such, I would be drinking this over the next seven or eight years, no longer.

Extremely aromatic with crushed-raspberry and plum character. Sweet tobacco, too. Hints of wet earth and dried mushrooms. Medium to full body, silky and racy tannins and an oyster-shell and iodine finish. A beauty. Drink in 2019.

Neal Martin bewertet den La Croix Ducru Beaucaillou 2014 aus Saint Julien im März 2017 wie folgt:
The 2014 La Croix de Beaucaillou has enjoyed a purple patch in recent vintages. The nose on the 2014 appeared to have closed down after bottling, but the quality is still tangible, almost sedate, but exquisitely defined tertiary red berry fruit gradually opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and energetic, very focused with superb mineralité. There is just a mote of hardness and rigidity on the finish, but that will be abraded by bottle age (and this is one Deuxième Vin that benefits from bottle maturity).

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2014 Saint Julien

The 2014 Ducru Beaucaillou showed extremely well when I tasted it with Bruno Borie during en primeur. Now in bottle, it delivers on that promise with beautifully defined blackberry and raspberry fruit infused with cedar and pencil box aromas. Quintessentially Saint Julien. The palate is very well defined with fine tannin, pitch-perfect acidity, a palpable sense of energy and frisson from start to finish that delivers plenty of tobacco-infused fruit. It is not the perfection-flirting legend that I have read elsewhere; it is just a damn good Saint Julien that is going to drink beautifully over the next 25 to 30 years.

The 2014 La Pointe has a composed, truffle and smoke tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass, touches of incense emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannin and well-judged acidity. This is refined and poised, displaying commendable energy and harmony towards the finish that begs you back for another sip. This is a well-made La Pointe from Eric Monnoret, a Pomerol that seems to be improving now that it is in bottle. One to watch... Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2014 Larcis-Ducasse has a lovely bouquet: quite complex compared to its Saint Emilion peers, adorned with rose petal notes complementing the cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry, brown spices and leather fusing with the red berries that segue into an atypically structured and classically styled finish that shows good length. This is an excellent Larcis-Ducasse that should give 20 years of drinking pleasure, possibly more.

There’s gorgeous purity here, with cassis, loganberry and raspberry fruit carried by a lightly brambly feel, giving this more weight
and grip than previous vintages. The chalky thread is there and really extends through the finish but is easily absorbed overall.
Ends with lovely bergamot and rooibos tea notes. Best from 2022 through 2035.—J.M.

The 2014 Figeac builds on its promise from barrel and delivers a very fulfilling bouquet with red plum, crushed strawberry, cedar and light graphite aromas that I suspect will close down for a period after bottling. (The bottle tasted at the château displayed a subtle incense aroma.) The palate is very well defined with a crisp line of acidity, sorbet fresh in the mouth and fanning out towards its structured, tensile finish. It is a great Figeac, a superb forerunner to the brilliant 2015 and it should not be underestimated. Chapeau winemaker Frédéric Faye and his team.

The 2014 Trotanoy had (que surprise!) closed down on the nose compared to its JP Moueix stablemates. A few swirls of the glass and it reveals very precise, mineral-soaked black fruit laced with black truffle and subtle sous-bois aromas. It soon gathers momentum and the aromas were gaining more and more intensity after five minutes. The palate is outstanding. There is brilliant structure here, immense and almost staggering purity, incredible focus and tension with an electrifying spiciness on the finish. Best Pomerol of the vintage? The only thing wrong with that last sentence is the question mark at the end.

90% Merlot 10% Cabernet Franc

Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy was considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol as of the eighteenth century.
Since 2009, a selection of gravel-based parcels on the north-eastern part of the estate have been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that is fruit-forward and approachable after just a few years of cellaring, but that maintains the depth, complexity, and incredible concentration of flavor that are so characteristic of Trotanoy’s unique terroir.
The Trotanoy vineyard, located in one of the best-exposed areas of the plateau and spared, in part, by the dramatic frosts of 1956, slopes gently to the west. The soil is a very dense mixture of clay and gravel which tends to solidify as it dries out after rain to an almost concrete-like hardness, hence the name “Trot-anoy,” — “too wearisome” to cultivate.
The soil at the highest point of exposure contains a good proportion of gravel, becoming progressively more dominated by clay as the elevation declines. Under this clay is a subsoil of red gravel and an impermeable layer of hard, iron-rich soil known as “crasse de fer.” This fascinating soil diversity brings power, depth and complexity to the wines.
Espérance de Trotanoy, which is produced in limited quantities and only in certain years, is vinified in small concrete vats and aged in French oak barrels.

The 2014 Vieux Chateau Certan is a blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked in three stages: 19-20 September, 29 September to 2 October, and 7 and 8 October. The yields came in at 38.7 hectoliters per hectare with 13.4% alcohol. It was one of my stars of the vintage and now in bottle, I find no reason to change that. It is endowed with an exquisite bouquet, really one of the best I encountered throughout my tastings: perfumed blackberry, wild strawberry, cold stone and wilted rose petals. Like in barrel, it is not powerful, yet it is blessed with wondrous precision. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and fine tannin, a slightly masculine VCC due to its linearity and precision. There is tension here from start to finish, a sophisticated and cerebral Pomerol that transcends the growing season. It is a totally different kettle of fish to the 2015 (and doubtless the pre-natal 2016). This is unashamedly classic in style, fanning out towards the mineral-rich finish with great frisson and energy. A cellar without the 2014 Vieux-Château-Certan would be a great pity.

The 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a much more approachable nose than usual, vibrant with red cherries, wild strawberry and cedar aromas, backed up with mineral-soaked blackberry fruit. The 2014 Pontet-Canet, now in bottle, was tasted twice during my trip to Bordeaux. It has an attractive bouquet: graphite tinged black fruit, incense and violets, perhaps a little more hedonistic than I envisaged when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin thanks to the keen line of acidity. I like the precision of this Pontet-Canet. It feels linear and correct, pencil lead notes developing towards the second half, more quintessentially Pauillac than previous vintages, with what you might describe as a classic Pauillac finish that retains the focus that I remarked upon from barrel. It will not have the depth and power of the subsequent 2015 Palmer, yet the "flow" is very sensual and the Merlot (45% of the blend) just lends it roundness and a caressing texture. What a beautiful Margaux and I bet it will be deceptively long-lived.

Neal Martin März 2017:
Tasted twice in Bordeaux in the early part of 2017, the 2014 Montrose replicated its showing at the property as part of the vertical in September 2016. It has that exquisite blackberry, cedar and blood orange scented nose that feels so effervescent even at this early stage. The palate is beautifully balanced with crisp, tensile black fruit, filigree tannin, perhaps in recent months developing a little more spiciness on the finish. It is just a beautiful, regal and complete Montrose that will give decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted February 2017.

Tasted at the château, the 2014 Montrose builds on the promise it showed in barrel with gorgeous blackberry, raspberry, cedar and orange sorbet scents that are extremely pure and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very precise acidity and layers of crisp black fruit laced with vanilla from the new oak at the moment. That will be subsumed in time. What you have here is a very precise, multi-layered, almost sensual Montrose that is going to delight many for years to come. This is highly recommended—one of the finest Left Bank wines this vintage. Tasted September 2016.

Chateau Tour des Termes 2014 Saint Estephe
89 Parker Punkte
Neal Martin 28. Oktober 2016:
The 2014 Tour des Termes has a clean and fresh nose with bright raspberry and wild strawberry scents mixed with tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, clean and pure with vivid raspberry and strawberry fruit, well integrated oak and fine density on the finish. This is a pretty and well crafted Saint Estèphe that surpasses my expectations from barrel, hence the higher score. Tasted September 2016.
Neal Martin April 2015 Fassprobe:
The Château Tour des Termes 2014 is a little disjointed on the nose–hopefully that will meld together during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, medium-bodied and perhaps in need of a little more flesh and ripeness on the finish. It has an easygoing style that I hope will be in situ once bottled. 86-88 Punkte

Herbal and savory notes add interest to this medium-bodied wine, which is moderately tannic and has fair length.

The intensity of plums, spices, mushrooms and black truffles is very impressive. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a savory finish. Delicious second wine already. Better in 2020.

Neal Martin bewertet den Les Pagodes de Cos 2014 im April 2015:
The Les Pagodes de Cos 2014 is a blend of 43% Merlot, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot, a selection from the vineyard according to age of vine and the soil. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a clean and precise bouquet, a veneer of blackberry and wild strawberry fruit intermixed with cedar and graphite, the latter becoming more pronounced with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry, well-judged acidity with veins of tobacco and allspice emerging toward the finish that gently fans out. There is already a pleasant freshness in situ that I hope will be retained by the time it is in bottle. Very fine.

Chateau Haut Bergey 2014 Pessac Leognan

A solid core of fruit to this wine with blueberry, dark chocolate and mineral character. Full body with firm tannins and a fresh finish.

Neal Martin April 2015:
The Château Haut-Bergey 2014 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot (though is pinch of Petit Verdot according Hélène Garçin-Léveque) raised in 30% new oak. It has a lot of ripeness on the nose, quite “full-on” in style and showing just a little sur-maturité. The palate is better, reining the opulence of the aromatics in with quite dense blackberry and raspberry fruit with commendable delineation on the finish. It just needs to contain that over-enthusiasm on the nose.

Neal Martin April 2015:
The Château de Chantegrive (Rouge) 2014 has a forward nose with baked red cherries and light kirsch-like scents that are nicely defined. You could imagine this being very punter-friendly. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin. There is good depth here, sappy in the mouth with a brisk finish that might lack length, but I feel with expand during its élevage. Fine.

Very solid, with a core of gently steeped black currant and plum fruit
that shows ample depth, while notes of bay, loam and bramble run underneath.
A loamy edge echoes longest, thanks to well-embedded acidity.

Quite a savory wine in which the cassis and cranberry fruit rather sit in the background, but the tannins are moderate in this context, and that makes the wine very approachable. Better in two years but already delicious.

Neal Martin März 2017:
The 2014 Brown, now in bottle, is building on the promise it showed in barrel. It has a ripe and generous bouquet with upfront cedar-infused black fruit. This property is always a little feisty in its youth and this 2014 is no different, though it needs 3-4 years to fully assimilate the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, delicious black fruit laced with tobacco and spices, gently fanning out towards the finish that offers commendable substance and length. A Pessac-Léognan property that I feel is undervalued in the marketplace, this 2014 Château Brown comes recommended and should drink well for 15-20 years.

Rene Gabriel 2015:

45 % Merlot, 31 % Cabernet Franc, 24 % Cabernet Sauvignon.

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2014 rouge Pessac Leognan

The typicity of La Mission is really here. Aromas of iodine, oyster shell, currants and orange peel are evident. Full-bodied, tight and tannic with a muscular and toned texture that holds the wine down at the moment, but it’s waiting to release its joy and true nature. Fine-grained. Give it until 2023.

Neal Martin bewertet den Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2014 rouge im März 2017 wie folgt:
The 2014 La Mission Haut Brion is a blend of 54% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked between 15 September and 8 October and raised in 55% new oak. It has retained that engagingly fresh and vibrant bouquet, the bashful nature that it showed in barrel replaced by a more outgoing personality. This is an exquisite bouquet with pure black fruit, cold stone, a touch of black olive and later a suggestion of boysenberry preserve. The palate is still structured and considering that a majority is Merlot, quite masculine. There remains some new oak to be fully assimilated, although there is clearly the fruit to soak that up. It comes more alive on the second half with a lovely spiciness and impressive persistence. It will have more to give down the line and the strictness implies that this La Mission Haut Brion should be afforded a decade in the cellar before it will show what it can do.

Chateau Pape Clement 2014 rouge Pessac Leognan

The 2014 Pape Clement has quite a potent bouquet with lavish red cherry, kirsch, iodine and pastille-like scents, the oak probably needing another couple of years to fully integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite refined and focused with appreciable tension towards the finish that comes laden with succulent, tobacco-infused blackberry fruit. This is a sumptuous and yet refined Pape-Clement that demonstrated the most matière or substance out of all the Pessac-Léognan 2014s that I tasted, except for the Haut-Brion. It is certainly a wine destined for a long future.
