Shaw & Smith Shiraz 2014 Adelaide Hills
James Halliday - 96 Punkte für den 2014er

Has established a consistent reputation as one of Australia's best cool climate shirazs, low yields (especially in 2014) and site selection all-important. Handpicked, partial whole bunch and remainder whole berry open-fermented, matured in French oak (33% new) for 14 months. A super-fragrant red cherry bouquet, with notes of mulberry, licorice and plum joining the vibrant red fruits of the palate, backed by firm, precisely framed tannins.

"Largely ex the Lenswood vineyard, handpicked, chilled overnight; whole bunch pressed, wild yeast-fermented in new and used French barriques; 9 months maturation. Makes its presence felt the first millisecond it enters the mouth, but doesn't threaten. A seamless fusion of white peach, biscuity oak and fresh acidity."

This is a very attractive and deceptively powerful chardonnay from a high-altitude site (500m) and one that delivers a latent, smouldering depth on the nose. Toasty, hazelnut-like oak breathes up through flinty complexity and a wealth of white peaches, melon, limes and grapefruit. The palate's super taut, really succulent and powerful, holding this thing tight for start to finish. Electrifying tension to this wine; new heights have been reached. Drink now to 2020+. 180 dozen produced.

Shaw and Smith Balhannah Vineyard 2013 Shiraz
James Halliday, 96/100

“70% whole bunch and matured in 500l French puncheons. Inaugural release from a vineyard planted to 550 vines per hectare. It's an exotic wine, developing slowly. Truffles, cloves, olives and saltbush on a bed of dark cherry-plum fruit. Tannin: ultra fine. Length: to burn. It's complex already but new worlds of aroma/flavour will open up given time.” (James Halliday, 96/100)

Wine Front, 95/100

“First release of a Balhannah single vineyard shiraz for Shaw + Smith. It’s from a low-yielding vineyard planted to 5500 vines per hectare. It was mostly whole bunch fermented and then aged in 500 litre French puncheons. It’s had 14 months in bottle prior to release. Only 292 dozen were made. It doesn’t blow you away but then it’s not meant to. It’s smoky and reductive with clove and olive notes laced to a hub of dark, brooding black cherry. It’s flecked with twiggy dried herb and spice, perhaps the odd saltbush notes passing casually by. It’s a concentrated wine without being an overblown one; its class in many ways rests in the way it parades savouriness seamlessly though the mouth, and churns ultra-fine tannin from a long way back in the palate. Quality? No real question about it.” (Wine Front, 95/100)

Shaw and Smith Balhannah Vineyard 2014 Shiraz
James Suckling 96/100
A cooler 2014 vintage has sent this into peppery, stony and spicy mode. Indeed, it's really complex and nicely layered, especially in terms of the aromatics where wild red plums meet blackberries, and the oak is nicely integrated too. The palate has impressive finesse and finely detailed tannin texture. There's some spark to it, just as peppery cherries, raspberries and blackberries hold fresh and lively. A wine that speaks of purity and place, and one that's pared back and focused. Drink now to 2025+.

Wissenswertes über den Weinberg Balhannah:

Vineyards

This is the first release of this wine. Fruit was sourced from close-planted low yielding vines at Shaw + Smith's Balhannah Vineyard in the central Adelaide Hills, planted in 2005. The distinctive site has always shown potential for a single site wine, and in this particular year the fruit was outstanding. It has a north-facing aspect and the soils are loam over clay, ironstone, quartzite and shale. Low yields are achieved by aggressive pruning and pre-harvest bunch thinning.

Lisa Perrotti Brown Februar 2013:

The 2010 Magill Estate Shiraz is deep garnet-purple in color and shows ripe cassis, blackberry and plum preserve aromas highlighted by lifted notes of roses, chocolate box and a touch of cedar. Medium to full-bodied, it is packed with rich, concentrated and refined flavors and framed with medium-firm, grainy tannins through the long finish. It should go on and on for a long time. Penfolds St. Henri 2013 Shiraz
TOP
97 Parker Punkte
Lisa Perrotti Brown 28 Oktober 2016:

This 2013 Shiraz St Henri follows in the blockbuster footsteps of the 2010 and 2012. The blend is 96% Shiraz with 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and the fruit sources are far and wide, including a real mix of terroirs: McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Padthaway and Port Lincoln. It spent 12 months in 50+-year-old casks. Deep garnet-purple colored, the youthfully reticent nose is complex, offering loam, aged meat, licorice, tar, scorched earth, fenugreek and cloves over a cherry cordial, blueberry pie and dried mulberries core. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals lovely, understated elegance and depth with a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and many fruit and spice layers emerging on the finish. This is one for the long-long haul and, at a fraction of the price of Grange, should be where the smart money goes for stocking the cellar.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown 28 Oktober 2016:
The 2012 Grange comes from just two sub-regions of South Australia this year: Barossa Valley (the majority) and McLaren Vale. This makes a lot of sense since 2012 was a cracking year in both of these areas, producing a number of extraordinary wines. As usual, this Grange contains a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, just 2%. Very deep purple-black in color, it opens on the nose with complex earthy/meaty/savory notes, soon giving way to baked blackberries, plum preserves, hoisin and Chinese five spice with dabs of sandalwood, licorice, menthol and vanilla. The palate reveals a surprisingly open, rich, full-bodied expression exuding a powerhouse of velvet-lined decadence. Still, it characteristically possesses that rock-solid “Grange” backbone of firm tannins and great freshness expressed in a real lively lift to the finish. And the finish is epically long. There are some stylistic similarities here to the opulent, gregarious 2008 vintage, perhaps just lacking ever so slightly in the same exhilarating abandonment of winemaking protocols for the celebration of the fruit and sites. That said, this is unquestionably a stonking great Grange!

Penfolds Grange 2010 BIN 95 Shiraz South Australia
100 Punkte James Suckling
9. Oktober 2014 James Suckling

The 2010 Grange arrives with much expectation and does not disappoint. This is a powerhouse, structurally superior to both the 2009 and 2008 vintages and breathtakingly dense, long and precise. The nose has cola, blackberry, vanillin, hard brown spices of all kinds, coal smoke, meaty charcuterie elements and a strong tarry, savory note that speaks of the 85% Barossa Valley componentry. The palate has super deep tannins that fan out through flavorsome black fruits. These are purposeful tannins; they bristle on the palate, tantalizing and assertive yet playful, strong not aggressive. The power here is the thing; this has mouth-coating density and terrific drive, so tightly coiled, it gives enough away to suggest a very, very long cellaring wine is here. This is a classic Grange that will please the serious collectors. A wine of genuine pedigree. Better in 2026.

The core of this wine is Barossa Valley Shiraz (85%) the remaining 15% shiraz (and 4% cabernet sauvignon) from the Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate. In time honoured fashion, it finished its fermentation in 100% new American oak hogsheads, where it spent the next 17 months. It has exceptional hue and depth to the colour; the smoky complexity to the black fruits (no red or blue) of the bouquet also offers licorice and earth aromas; only a great Burgundy could have more nuances defined each time you revert to the bouquet. You could lose yourself, Narcissus-like, looking endlessly into the reflection of the palate; for all its power, there is not a hair out of place, the tannins outstanding. There is not the slightest question this will be one of the greatest Granges in the pantheon of '52, '55, '71, '96 and '06.

Oktober 2014 Lisa Perrotti Brown

The 2010 Grange is a 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 96% Shiraz blend made from Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate fruit that was aged 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Very deep purple-black in color, this is classic Grange - amongst the finest produced - replete with fresh, vibrant and youthful black fruit notes showing some blueberry aromas and accents of camphor, anise and the slightest floral hint plus a whiff of oak in the background to lend a cedar-laced lift to this textbook Shiraz nose. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, it is very taut and finely constructed showing typically firm, grainy, uniform tannins, great concentration and wonderful persistence on the finish. If I have any very slight complaint of this near perfect wine it is that it seems a little too clinical and appears to speak less of the land and the heart of South Australia and more of the very skilled winemaking than did the Grange from the magical 2008 vintage.
