The 2019 Certan de May has turned out very well, offering up aromas of rich cherries, cassis, loamy soil and creamy but nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, layered and lively, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish, this is beautifully balanced Pomerol that no doubt benefits from the perspective of consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet.

The 2016 Certan de May is a powerful. dense wine. just as it was en primeur. A blast of grilled herbs. leather. smoke. tobacco. licorice and dark-fleshed fruits makes a strong opening statement. Potent and strap in feel. Certan de May shows the more virile side of Pomerol. The profile is decidedly sepia-toned. Readers should plan on being patient with the 2016. It is a jewel of a wine that just needs bottle age to be at its best.

The 2019 Le Gay has an unashamed old school Pomerol bouquet that I like. very terroir driven with loamy black fruit. touches of shaved black truffle and warm gravel. It is not a fruit-forward. sensual Pomerol - this is much more intellectual. like some of the older Le Gay that I tasted during the Robin sisters era. The palate is very well balanced with plenty of red fruit. structured like Le Gay usually is with brown spices and clove towards the persistent finish. It is one of the appelation's most fascinating wines and it should age with style.

The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous. spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit. spice. lavender. licorice and menthol all develop in the glass. but it is the wine's textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today. it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No. there is not. This is a tremendous showing.

The 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan was bottled in mid-May as usual. This was one of the wines of the vintage out of barrel. and now it has a compelling bouquet with blackberry. smoke and iris. There is wonderful delineation here. a cerebral bouquet that is quite mercurial in the glass. traces of black truffle emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and just a killer line of acidity. a Vieux Chateau Certan surfeit with energy and joie de vivre. It fans out in glorious. almost swaggering fashion with truffle and white pepper. a touch of truffle on the persistent finish. This is clearly destined to be one among the canon of legendary wines from the estate although it does deserve requisite cellaring. This is one of the wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2025 - 2055.

Medium to deep garnet-purple—it has a very vibrant color—it drifts effortlessly out of the glass with wonderfully intense. beautifully delineated scents of red roses. black raspberries. kirsch and Darjeeling tea before the powerful. profound black fruits kick in: baked plums. wild blueberries. molten licorice and mulberries with touches of cigar box. cinnamon stick. tapenade and truffles. The 2018 Vieux Château Certan is a very pretty wine built more on elegance. finesse and aromatic nuance. Relative to the recent past. the 2018 shows a much more mid-weight structure and less of the creaminess of either 2015 or 2016. Much of that is attributable to a blend that includes 30% Cabernet Franc. Lavender. rose petal. mint and blueberry fruit all grace the 2018. Far from an obvious wine. the 2018 is going to need a number of years to be at its best. as it is a wine of total understatement and class. Fine beads of tannin support the understated finish. In 2018. VCC is a wine of refinement and subtlety more than anything else. I don't see the same visceral thrill as in a number of vintages of the recent past. Perhaps that will come in bottle.
